GENERAL 1.1 The pull box for the witchgear hall be deigned, detailed, and fabricated in accordance with the requirement of thi pecification and the following drawing: Light-duty pull box. Heavy-duty pull box. Pull box detail. 1.2 The pull box hall be of (light-duty or heavy-duty) contruction and hall be ized to accommodate (15.5-kV, 29-kV, or 38-kV) witchgear with (two, three, four, five, or ix) way. 1.3 The pull box cover hall have opening ection above the witchgear to allow operation of the gear from grade level. The entire cover hall be removable for intallation and removal of the witchgear, and intallation and repair of the cable. A ladder and platform (optional) hall be provided to facilitate intallation, removal, and repair operation. II. PULL BOX TYPES 2.1 Light-duty pull boxe are intended for yard application where they will not be ubjected to vehicular traffic on the cover. Thee pull boxe are only required to reit foot traffic on the cover, lateral earth preure due to the urrounding oil, and nominal urcharge load (due to pick-up truck) applied to the area urrounding the pull box. 2.2 Heavy-duty pull boxe are intended for idewalk or road application where they could be ubjected to truck traffic. Thee pull boxe are required to reit truck traffic on the cover, lateral earth preure due to the urrounding oil, and large urcharge load (due to emitrailer truck) applied to the area urrounding the pull box. III. DESIGN CRITERIA 3.1 Light-duty pull boxe and cover hall be deigned in accordance with the requirement of ASTM C 857 Load Deignation A Heavy-duty pull boxe and cover hall be deigned in accordance with the requirement of ASTM C 857 Load Deignation A Tolerance (a) (b) Pull boxe hall be deigned and contructed o that the inide dimenion, a hown on the drawing, are maintained under the pecified loading condition. PULL BOX COVER 4.1 Light-duty cover (a) (b) (c) The pull box cover hall include hinged ection for acce to the operating mechanim of the witchgear. Thee ection hall be manually operable by average operating peronnel. 4.2 Heavy-duty cover (a) (b) (c) Hinged cover ection hall include locking device to prevent acce by unauthorized peron. The entire pull box cover hall be removable by everal operating peronnel or by machine. The pull box cover hall include hinged or manually removable ection for acce to the operating mechanim of the witchgear. Thee ection hall be manually operable by average operating peronnel uing common hand tool. Hinged or removable cover ection hall include locking device to prevent acce by unauthorized peron. The entire pull box cover hall be removable by machine. V. DETAILS 5.1 Embedded leeve hall be provided for cable entry and exit a hown on the drawing. 5.2 Pulling-in iron hall be provided in the pull box wall a hown on the drawing. The maximum tenile load applied at any one time to one iron hall be 5,000 lb. Pulling-in iron hall be McGraw- Edion, Cat. No. DU2T3, ⁷ ₈-inch diameter with hot-dipped galvanized finih, or equivalent. 5.3 Embedment hall be provided for upport of the witchgear, ladder, platform (optional), and cableupport angle (optional), a hown on the drawing. VI. MATERIALS 6.1 Pull boxe hall be contructed from noncorroive material uch a fibergla, platic, or reinforced concrete. 6.2 Pull box cover hall have irregular or rough urface to increae traction and hall be contructed from concrete, fibergla, platic, aluminum, or galvanized teel. 6.3 Embedment for upport of the witchgear, ladder, platform (optional), and cable-upport angle (optional), hall be galvanized teel or a noncorroive material uch a fibergla or platic. 3 VII. OPTIONS 7.1 Light-duty pull boxe hall be provided with a (olid or open) bae. VIII. DRAINAGE 8.1 All pull boxe hall have drainage for prompt removal of rain or floodwater that might ubmerge the witchgear. Solid-bae pull boxe hall be connected to a torm ewer, dry well, or other drainage ytem. Open-bae pull boxe may be drained into porou oil. IX. CABLE TRAINING AND SUPPORT 9.1 Cable hall be routed to the witchgear in uch a manner a to minimize force on the buhing from cable expanion or movement. A minimum of a 90 bend hall be provided in the cable a hown on the drawing to mitigate the effect of cable expanion. Page 3 of 13
