What an incredible turnout at the District meeting in October with more than 300 of our members in attendance! Thank you so much for your dedication and support. With such a strong base, the possibilities are limitless as we all strive to follow the mission of the Garden Club of Georgia to make our communities better through beautification, conservation and education. Special appreciation is given to the Co-Chairs of our fall meeting, Patsy Harrison and Sandra Johanek. As Co-Presidents of the St. Simons Council of Garden Clubs, they worked tirelessly with the planning committee for more than one year to produce our very successful meeting. The committee was comprised of representatives from the five clubs of the St. Simons Council (Cassina, Cherokee, Hamilton Plantation, Live Oaks, Neptune) and included Beth Downey, Sharon Flores, Ruth Kolumber, Sara Lanier, Kitty Larkins, Nancy Ringeling, Chris Salo and Fran Shaw. In addition, many more volunteers from the St. Simons garden clubs provided hospitality, worked in the Country Store, served as hostesses, created table centerpieces, door prizes and gift bags, sold District merchandise, collected pull tabs and Fig Leaf donations and coordinated merchandise drop-offs and parking. The Country Store was full of wonderful merchandise contributed by our Oleander clubs. Thank you for your great donations everything was sold! Kudos and congratulations to all attendees and volunteers - for making the 2011 meeting so memorable. Sharon Flores Director

ff ~ District Awards Page Oleander District Award Winners Dixie Diffenderfer, Oleander District Awards Chair and her committee, Mary Nelson Adams of the Wimberly Garden Club and Mary L. Burns of the Richmond Hills Garden Club met in early October to evaluate the award nominations from throughout the District. The committee thanks all who made the effort and took the time to submit applications for the Oleander District awards. They stated that reading the report s of your diverse activities, we the committee had a hard time in selecting winners. All the entries were worthy of commendation and made us proud of our district s outstanding accomplishments. Garden Club members contribute much to their communities. These awards let others know that we are concerned citizens as we further the goals of Garden Club: Beautification, Conservation and Education. If your club did not submit an entry or several entries this year, be very sure that next year others know of your work. Sharing our successes is a catalyst to other clubs; it sparks, it fuels our creativity and enthusiasm! Congratulations to all of the 2011 winners! Sara Lewis Award ~ Sherle Beck THE SARA LEWIS AWARD, a certificate and a silver bowl highlights the INDIVIDUAL WHO ACCOMPLISHED OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN THE FILED OF HORTICULTURE. This year s SARA LEWIS honoree is a member of the Blythe Island Garden Club and has served continuously on the Oleander District Board since 1979 and on the Garden Club of Georgia Board since By her own admission, she is a plant collector and says her garden is tussy-mussy, but her garden has rare tropical plants collected from her travels, and she shares with friends and neighbors. She is an instructor, giving programs on horticulture design, medicinal plants, and her favorite ginger plants. She grows Amaryllis from seeds. Her knowledge of horticulture design is appreciated and shared in projects such as Habitat for Humanity houses as well as with Glynn County Garden Club Council, Oleander District, and the Garden Club of Georgia. Nelle Pope Award ~ Odum Garden Club THE NELLE POPE AWARD is a certificate and a silver bowl and goes to a club or group of clubs that achieve IN THE FIELD OF HORTICULTURE. This year s energetic winner is a small town club that does an outstanding job in the area of horticulture by designing, planting and replacing shrubbery at several civic sites. Their aim is to help maintain a neat and well groomed community in which all citizens can take pride. The work has been done by 16 garden club members, helped by spouses, friends and children. With the advice of their county agent, they designed a landscape plan for the City Hall, pruned or replaced damaged shrubbery, purchased and planted new items. When their city built a new fire station, they volunteered to take the grounds beautification at the fire station as a garden club project: designed, planted and maintained the plants there. Word got around and the PTO requested their services at the elementary school. Again, they developed a plan, purchased a variety of plants that attract butterflies, created and maintained an inviting area in the front of the school. The ODUM GARDEN CLUB is to be commended for their effort to enhance their community by designing, planting and maintaining Horticulture. June Thomas accepted the award for the Odum Garden Club.

District Awards Page 9 Shirley M. Lewis Environmental Awareness Award Wilmington Island Garden Club The SHIRLEY M. LEWIS AWARD, presented to the club or group of clubs that accomplish the most in the ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD is given with a certificate and a precious little bird statue. For three years now one garden club has held an annual competition encouraging owners to improve the landscaping in front of their businesses, large or small. The plan has worked very satisfactorily, greatly improving the community s green space; moreover, previous winners maintain and continue to improve their landscaping, hoping to win again. This year the winner of the contest was a small café where the owner did all of her own gardening and even made macrame plant holders. Also, the garden club advised new landscape design for a large strip shopping center, choosing drought resistant trees, shrubs and other plants. The WILMINGTON ISLAND GARDEN CLUB members are extremely pleased with the enhanced look to their community, and we congratulate them for their environmental awareness and improvement. Pictured L to R: Shirley Lewis, Betty Ward, President, Wilmington Island Garden Club and Betty Ann King, President, Savannah Area Council of Garden Clubs. Mary Helen Ray Beautification & Historic Preservation Award Live Oaks Garden Club and Odum Garden Club The MARY HELEN RAY BEAUTIFICATION & HISTORIC PRESERVATION AWARD has dual winners this year. None of the three persons on the Awards Committee could decide between two outstanding projects in our Oleander District. One of these involved a three-stage Work Adventure at the R.J. Reynolds Mansion on Sapelo Island with 20 garden club participants, spouses and friends. Adventure I entailed three different days of pruning, raking and removing fallen debris as well as preparing soil and planting new flowers around the verandas and porches. For Adventure II, garden club members compiled a list of needed projects and proceeded to clean, repair and polish the mansion s interior. With Adventure III, they designed new window treatments for the formal dining room and sewed ten new chair pads, making a day trip to Sapelo to install their handiwork. Thank you, ODUM GARDEN CLUB for your work on Sapelo Island. June Thomas accepted the award for Odum Garden Club A second ambitious Oleander garden club has undertaken many island beautification projects; their newest goal is to restore the aging tree canopy in their community by planting 1,000 trees over the next 10 years. The first phase of the project is complete with the planting of forty 14-foot Live Oaks on St. Simons Island. The cost, $23,740, included installation and one year maintenance to establish healthy growth. Fortunately, the St. Simons Land Trust is partnering in this project, and the garden club is encouraging individuals and businesses to become involved as well. Let us admire the foresight in this energetic and hard working garden club. Thank you, LIVE OAKS GARDEN CLUB for your work on St. Simons Island. Kitty Larkins accepted for Live Oaks Garden Club

District Awards Page 10 Martha Miller Butterfly Award ~ Live Oaks Garden Club The MARTHA MILLER BUTTERFLY AWARD, a butterfly platter, is given to a club or group that made outstanding environmental contributions by planting and maintaining a butterfly garden. One Oleander club opened a butterfly garden in 2009, a new experience for them. For three years feedback from community residents and visitors has been enthusiastic, and many garden club members eagerly participate in the maintenance on scheduled work days and on their own. The Butterfly Garden at Demere Park has become an intrinsic part of St. Simons Island, thanks to the creativity and support of THE LIVE OAKS GARDEN CLUB, the repeated winner of the MARTHA MILLER BUTTERFLY AWARD. Award accepted by Kitty Larkins Louise Stewart Membership Award Cassina Garden Club The LOUISE STEWART MEMBERSHIP AWARD is given annually to the club that has the greatest increase in membership. This framed needlepoint of the Garden Club of Georgia s brown thrasher emblem was presented to the CASSINA GARDEN CLUB of St. Simons Island, which had an increase of 15 members in The award was accepted by Janis Rodriguez. The Garden Club selling the greatest number of State Engagement Calendars ~ Screven County Garden Club THE CLUB SELLING THE MOST STATE ENGAGEMENT CALENDARS receives a Certificate commending their enthusiasm and commitment. 11 District Awards Page 11 The Garden Club that has applied for and /or won the greatest number of Garden Club of Georgia, Deep South and National Garden Clubs awards. Cassina Garden Club THE GARDEN CLUB ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Certificate goes to the club that has applied for and/or won the most awards. Again, this year, the award was earned by the CASSINA GARDEN CLUB OF ST. SIMONS ISLAND. They received seven First Place Awards and one Second Place Award from the Garden Club of Georgia, one Second Place and three Honorable Mentions from the Deep South Region and one Honorable Mention from the National Garden Clubs, Inc. - a total of 13 submitted entries. Congratulations! Janis Rodriguez accepted the award on behalf of Cassina Garden Club. Outstanding Garden Club Member Reta Willoughby The OUTSTANDING GARDEN CLUB MEMBER AWARD is reserved for the member who has demonstrated outstanding service to garden related activities. This year s Oleander outstanding member took the helm of her garden club as president in 2003 at a low ebb in the club s membership and participation. Motivated by her own great love for gardening, she encouraged new members, began new projects, encouraged District participation, initiated plant sales and civic projects as well as support for LeConte-Woodmanston and Friends of Coastal Gardens. For eight years as president, RETA WILLOUGHBY has revived and sparked new enthusiasm in the PEMBROKE GARDEN CLUB, which is now more than eighty years old. They are so proud of her! Dixie Diffenderfer proudly presented the 2011 trophy to Reta Willoughby.

GCG Scholarship Fund Page 12 Oleander Clubs Encouraged to Contribute to Scholarship Fund The GCG Scholarship Fund is possible because of the support and generosity of our members who purchase calendars, make donations to the General Scholarship Funds, establish and renew Named Scholarships, become a Patron of Scholarship and a State Life member. These are all meaningful ways to honor or memorialize someone special while supporting students who cannot accomplish their goals due to lack of family support or other hardships in their lives. A Named Scholarship is established with a gift of $1, and is a rewarding option for recognizing someone special. This can be a one time donation or renewed annually with a donation of a minimum of $1, This scholarship is awarded in its entirety with consideration of pairing the benefactor and the scholarship. Named Scholarship recipients are awarded during the two-year term the donation is made and are recognized in Garden Gateways, the Expressions calendar and are recorded in the Archives and Historical Records at GCG s State Headquarters. Donations are sent to Dot Williams, State Scholarship Chairman, 6521 Rivoli Drive, Macon, GA Please enclose a letter stating the name which should appear on the scholarship, any notes describing the significance of donation and to whom a note of acknowledgment should be sent. A Patron of Scholarship certificate is awarded with a $ donation and presented at an Annual District meeting. Donations to the Brown Thrasher and Cherokee Scholarships go directly to the principle and only the interest is used for awarding scholarships. Donations to these scholarships, as well as other donations to the general scholarship fund, are sent to Brenda Griner, GCG Assistant Treasurer, 244 Satilla Drive, Brunswick, GA Please send a letter noting if the donation is in honor or memory of someone and to whom a letter of acknowledgement should be sent. Scholarships are awarded to students in March so it is not too late to send in your donations for this year. Our membership has always been very generous in supporting these committed and deserving students. The students who receive these scholarships have worked hard to achieve high grade point averages and are committed to the preservation of natural beauty, environmental health and the education of others in the fields of landscape, horticulture and historic preservation. We can all be proud of our support to the scholarship program and how we fulfill our missions through these students. 18 Club Activities Page 18 Dogwood Garden Club in the Spotlight Celebrating 62 Years The Dogwood Garden Club was organized on a hot and sultry day in September 1949 when 23 southern ladies met at the home of Marjorie Yeomans, the first club President. Those were the days of hats, gloves and all-out finery. Fine china, crystal and sterling silver were used when refreshments were served. The fare was simple but elegant and included tea sandwiches, dainty cookies, cheese straws and great southern iced tea. Beautiful floral arrangements were all over the home of the hostess. The new garden club members prided themselves on their arrangements with flowers, fruit or dried materials. Today, the club is known as the Golden Gardeners of Dogwood Garden Club with a membership of twelve. Only one original member is still active the President, Martha Jean Burns. According to Martha Jean, We have done it all - Garden Therapy, Landscape Design; Flower Shows, Recycling, Youth Programs. A grant from the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. Historic Landscape & Garden Grant Program and Community on My Mind Grant helped provide funding for irrigation, site preparation, and for camellias that would have been planted in Louis LeConte s Botanical Garden. Research has been done to find camellias that were available prior to 1838 when Louis LeConte died. A list of 17 camellias has been compiled. The search is now on to find those camellias and Alba Plena is on the list. Several of those varieties were planted at the site many years ago by Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. members. The American Camellia Society in Fort Valley is helping locate the other camellias. Eighteen TRI COLOR (1835) camellias have arrived and are ready for planting. Deer netting has been placed on all camellias in the garden. Cuttings from the garden of Lois Groszman have been potted and will be planted in the garden when large enough. One hundred April blooming bulbs will be shipped from Virginia in November. In addition, 800 Narcissus will be shipped from Connecticut, with all from Louis LeConte s list of bulbs. Site work is being done by volunteers. The third Saturday of each month is Volunteer Day at Woodmanston Plantation. All help is greatly appreciated and needed.
