Garden Guild of Winnetka Member of The Garden Club of America Presents Route 66 A GCA Flower Show May 15, 16 & 17, 2012 The Kenilworth Club 410 Kenilworth Avenue Kenilworth, IL Open to the Public May 17-9:00 a.m. to Noon No Admission Charge

The purpose of a flower show is threefold: to set standards of artistic and horticultural excellence; to broaden knowledge of horticulture, floral design, photography, conservation, and other related areas; and to share the beauty of a show with fellow club members and with the public. The Garden Club of America Flower Show and Judging Guide, 2009 Revised Edition The purpose of The Garden Club of America is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening; to share the advantage of association by means of educational meetings, conferences, correspondence and publications; and to restore, improve and protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and action in the fields of conservation and civic improvement. 2

Route 66, known as America s Main Street, mapped out by bureaucrats in 1926, began in Chicago at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Adams Street and upon completion stretched over 2000 miles westward. As an early paved road, motorists along the route traveled through numerous small towns, the wide-open landscapes of the great Midwest and the majestic scenery of the southwest to Santa Monica, California. Along the way, many mom and pop businesses cropped up in the form of cafes, drive-ins, diners, gasoline stations and motels, along with many kitschy sights and spectacles. During the difficult dust bowl days of the 1930 s it became an escape route to the West. In John Steinbeck s Grapes of Wrath, it described the route as a trip down the mother road the road of flight. After World War II, veterans seeking jobs saw it as a highway of hope toward a bright future. Among them was Bobby Troup, the writer of the ever-popular song (Get Your Kicks on) Route 66. Detroit, during its heyday, turned out cars with V8 engines and drivers found the ultimate joy ride on Route 66, following author Jack Kerouac s mantra of a fast car, a coast to reach, and a girl at the end of the road. In the early 1960 s there was a prime-time network television show called Route 66 that did not actually focus on the highway. However, it conjured up tantalizing adventures at its western terminus, making Route 66 a star. A particularly hazardous section of the highway was illustrated on a map shown to Lightning McQueen in the Disney movie Cars. Now, Route 66 exists only in historical sections, having been replaced by the national inter-state highway system. However, it has long achieved legendary status and remains a road with a big personality, enjoying a strong following from tourists all over the world. Enjoy your artistic adventure along Route 66! 3

Division IV Conservation exhibit The Route of Water Whether drinking it, gardening with it or hoping it doesn t flood your basement, water is a precious resource and a vital part of our world. Water that dinosaurs drank is still consumed by humans and the amount of fresh water on earth has not changed significantly for millions of years. (Michael Specter, The Last Drop, The New Yorker, 10/21/06) While most of the earth s surface is composed of ocean, we have a finite amount of potable water and a growing demand for it. Water is being consumed faster than it is being replenished. If we do not alter our present course it could be catastrophic. This exhibit will focus on water conservation on a personal level - how we can manage, protect and conserve this precious resource with good practices. With good routing practices, we can preserve water for all future generations. Division V Garden History and Design Exhibit Documenting a Garden for the Archives of American Gardens collection at the Smithsonian institution A display using a sample garden submission developed by the Smithsonian Gardens staff that demonstrated how Garden Club of America members can successfully document a garden for the Archives of American Gardens, a project of the GCA Garden History and Design Committee. 25

GCA FLOWER SHOW AWARDS The GCA Flower Show Awards described below have been applied for and will be presented if merited. The Harriet DeWaele Puckett Creativity Award may be awarded to members of GCA clubs or non-members in recognition of a uniquely skillful and creative response to an imaginative schedule. It will be given for an innovative and interpretive entry, which, although it abides by the principles of good design, goes beyond traditional period arrangement to whatever art form the arranger(s) chooses. The arrangement must have placed first, second, or third in the Floral Design Division of a GCA Flower Show. An entry in any challenge class is not eligible to receive this award. The award is not a substitute for Best in Show and will be given at the discretion of the judges. The Dorothy Vietor Munger Award may be presented to members of Garden Club of America clubs in competitive floral design classes at GCA Flower Shows. It is offered in recognition of creative work of outstanding beauty using predominantly fresh plant material. The arrangement must have placed first, second, or third. An entry in any Challenge class is not eligible for the award. The award is not a substitute for Best in Show and will be given at the discretion of the judges. The Sandra Baylor Novice Award may be given at a GCA Flower Show to an exhibitor who is a member of a GCA club and who has never won first place, or the Novice Award in the Floral Design Division of a GCA or a GCA Major Flower Show. It shall be awarded for a unique and skillful response to the schedule. An individual novice entry placing first, second, or third in any competitive class, including challenge classes, is eligible for this award. Once an exhibitor has won the novice award, the individual is no longer a novice even though the award may have been given for a second or third place entry. The exhibitor remains a novice in the floral design division of a GCA Major Flower Show. The Catherine Beattie Medal is to be awarded for a horticulture entry distinguished by its vibrancy, prime condition, and perfection of grooming. It must have been grown by the exhibitor for at least six months. The medal may be awarded for a single plant, collection of plants, container garden, or cut specimen, but only if there is an exhibit worthy of the honor. It may be awarded to members of GCA clubs only; individual, joint, and club entries are eligible. The award should not be considered as a substitute for Best in Show. The medal may not be awarded to the same exhibit more than once; however, offspring of a Beattie winner are eligible to receive the award. 26

The Clarissa Willemsen Horticulture Propagation Award is to be awarded for a horticulture entry distinguished by its prime condition, flawless grooming and difficulty of propagation. This entry must have been propagated and grown by the exhibitor for at least six months. The Horticulture Propagation Award may be given for a single rooted plant or a collection of rooted plants. The dates and method of propagation must be recorded on the entry card. The entry must have placed first, second, or third at a GCA Flower Show. The award may not be given to an exhibit more than once. The Rosie Jones Horticulture Award may be presented to a horticulture entry of exceptional visual appeal that reflects the spirit of growing with joy and enthusiasm and inspires others to propagate, grow, show and share horticulture. An exhibit that has been propagated by the exhibitor will be given special consideration but propagation is not a requirement. Perfection, while always desirable, is not a primary criterion. This award celebrates the ineffable joy inherent in the beauty and pursuit of horticulture. It could be the entry that would win the popular vote but not necessarily the Beattie or the blue ribbon. Its primary virtue shall be its exceptional and exuberant inspiration. It may be awarded at a GCA Flower Show and is to be judged by GCA judges. The GCA Novice Award may be given at a GCA and a GCA Major Flower Show in the Horticulture, Photography and Special Divisions to an exhibitor who is a member of a GCA club and who has never won first place or this award in the Division entered of a GCA or GCA Major Flower Show. It shall be awarded to an individual novice exhibitor for an outstanding exhibit. Novice entries placing first, second, or third are eligible for this award. Once an exhibitor has won the novice award, the individual is no longer a novice even though the award may have been given for a second or third place entry. The Photography Committee Creativity Award may be given to a member of a GCA club in recognition of creative and technical excellence in response to the theme of the schedule. The entry must have placed first, second, or third. The Ann Lyon Crammond Award may be presented at a GCA or GCA Major Flower Show to an outstanding educational exhibit, which best educates the public about gardens. Any educational exhibit which increases the appreciation of any aspect of plants, gardens, or landscape design may be considered for this award. The award may be given to GCA club members, member clubs, non-members or other organizations. The Marion Thompson Fuller Brown Conservation Award may be presented for an outstanding conservation exhibit at a GCA Flower Show. The award recognizes an exhibit of exceptional educational and visual merit, which increases knowledge and awareness of the environment. The exhibit should emphasize environmental concerns and may demonstrate conservation practices. Plant material may or may not be used and, when appropriate, must be clearly identified. Protected material may be included if such materials are identified as protected and not collected in the wild. The award may be given to Garden Club of America clubs, club members, non-members or other organizations. 27

A Best in Show, selected from among the first place winners, may be awarded in each Division. A Judges Commendation may be given to an entry, class, section, special exhibit or other aspect of the show that is of exceptional merit. GARDEN GUILD OF WINNETKA CLUB AWARDS The Ina Edens Award may be presented to a Garden Guild of Winnetka member in recognition of creative and dramatic work that exudes distinction and beauty of arrangement of fresh or dried plant material, fruits or vegetables. To be awarded in a Floral Design Division consisting of no fewer than 18 entries and 3 or more classes. The Pam Benz Award may be awarded to a horticultural exhibit of exceptional distinction. The honor may be bestowed upon a single plant, a collection of plants, a container garden, or cut specimen. The exhibit must have been grown by the exhibitor for at least six (6) months and must have placed first, second or third. Extra consideration will be given to an exhibit propagated by the exhibitor but propagation is not a requirement. The Award may not be presented to the same exhibit more than once. 28

MAP AND DIRECTIONS The Kenilworth Club is located at 410 Kenilworth Avenue, Kenilworth, IL just east of Green Bay Road and the Metra station at Kenilworth Avenue. It is best reached from the north or south via Green Bay Road. Alternatively, Sheridan Road is several blocks east of the Club. If coming via that route, turn west at Kenilworth Avenue in Kenilworth. The phone number is: (847) About The Kenilworth Club The Kenilworth Club Assembly Hall, designed by noted architect George W. Maher, is the historic building that has served as Kenilworth's community house since its construction in The Kenilworth Club represents an evolution of the old New England village meeting house. The building has long been regarded as a masterpiece - perhaps the masterpiece - of George W. Maher's mature prairie style. The club offers an excellent example of Maher's "motif-rhythm" theory: a diamond capping a long stem is seen throughout the building in a variety of sizes. With its long, low roof forms, simplified details in stucco and timber, distinctive art glass windows, and open interior spaces, the Hall stands as one of the very finest examples of the Prairie School of architecture that flourished in the Midwest shortly after Of all Maher s work, this building is closest to the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, as one can see by comparing it to Wright's Hiram Baldwin house of 1905 at 205 Essex Road, a few blocks away. Originally the Kenilworth Avenue entrance featured a pergola with an elm tree protruding through it. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is the prominent centerpiece of Kenilworth, serving its civic and cultural community. 29
