1 Linden Garden Club of Pinewild March 2014 Newsletter Meeting and Luncheon: Thursday, March 20, :00 AM Pinewild Country Club Amy Wood Pasquini Our State: Living in the South Amy Wood Pasquini, Marketing Development Director at OUR STATE magazine, will speak about the magazine and her two books about living in the south. Amy is also the Executive Producer of content for OUR STATE, a ten-time Emmy Award winning television show produced by UNC-TV. Amy states that "my speaking engagements for Our State blend history, humor and travel ideas, always ending with the 'Butter Bean Song. Since 1933, Our State magazine has been North Carolina's premier travel, food, and culture publication, celebrating the best of life in the state. Published by Mann Media, Inc., the awardwinning magazine reaches more than 850,000 readers each month, with subscribers in every state and more than 30 foreign countries. Amy was born in Atlanta and grew up in North Carolina. She graduated from Georgia State University with a BA in journalism. She is the author of two books, LIFE BETWEEN AZALEA FESTIVALS and WHITE BREAD: A PRODIGAL JAUNT THROUGH THE SUBURBAN SOUTH, in addition to many articles for Our State. Please (preferred) Ginny Notestine at or by phone at by Monday, the 17th of March to make your luncheon reservation. Please note that you must notify Ginny in your if you will attend the meeting, but are not staying for lunch. If you do not receive a confirmation, please get in touch with Ginny promptly! This month s luncheon will be a seated meal and has been selected by Chef Todd and Janet Farrell. If you have food allergies or special diets, please put that in your as well and Chef Todd will make accommodations for you. A vegetarian meal is always available, just let Ginny know that you would like one when you RSVP. Checks for $55.00 should be made out to Linden Garden Club and given to Nona Burrell by mail or put on her front porch. Your check is your reservation for the bus trip! Don t forget to purchase the birdhouses for the brown-headed nuthatch sponsored by The Pinehurst Greenway Wildlife Habitat Committee. The sale of these is something the committee is doing to help the National Audubon Society project of providing nest boxes for these cute little birds. In parts of North Carolina and the entire East Coast the number of species has declined significantly. These bird houses (with instructions) sell for $15.00 each and can be purchased at the Pinehurst Village Hall front desk. Linden Garden Spring Clean Up Wednesday, March 26 th at 10 AM! Come and join us for the spring clean-up of the Linden Garden as we prepare for all the beautiful flowers that will be popping up! Bring a rake, planting tools and gloves. 4 & WITHERSPOON ROSE CULTURE/DURHAM, NC We will be visiting at the peak of the rose blooming season! Lunch at The Weathervane Restaurant at Southern Seasons Hostesses for this year s trip are Marie Homa, Nina Lewis, Dianne Schultz and Judy Trevarrow! This year we will be traveling to the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill. We will then stop for a wonderful lunch at the Weathervane Restaurant and finish up with a visit to the Witherspoon Rose Culture in Durham. The North Carolina Botanical Garden is a "conservation garden." Their guiding mission is "to inspire understanding, appreciation, and conservation of plants in gardens and natural areas and to advance a sustainable relationship between people and nature." You can learn more about this non-profit garden at: After lunch, we will visit the Witherspoon Rose Culture in Durham. The president, David Pike spoke last year at our January meeting about "Successful Growing of Roses in the South." You can view these beautiful rose gardens at their very informative website: David states that we will be visiting at the peak of rose blooming! This trip is always a highlight of our year and our hostesses shower us with homemade goodies, bottled water and even a little wine for the ride home! We should return to Pinewild at approximately 5:30 pm. Cost of the entire trip is $ Guests are welcome. Peter Hertl of NC State University will give a presentation on coping with moles & voles in the garden. Program co-sponsored by the Sandhills Horticultural Society and the Council of Garden Clubs. FREE but reservations necessary. March 27 (Thursday) 10AM to 11:30AM, Summer & Fall Blooming Bulbs, Sandhills Horticultural Gardens - Ball Visitors Center. Hilarie Blevins, Horticulturalist at the Country Club of North Carolina, will present a talk on selection, planting & care of summer & fall blooming bulbs. Varieties will be discussed & a selection will be available to order at the spring plant sale. $5.00 members, $10 nonmembers. Registration & payment due by March 12th. April 5 (Saturday) Plant a Living Wall Picture, 10AM - 12 noon, Linda Hamwi the "Plant Diva" will conduct this workshop in which participants will make a wall picture with plants like the ones at Belk in Pinecrest Plaza. Sandhills Community College, Steed Hall/Stephens Laboratory. This is a make it and take it workshop. $60 members, $65 non-members. Space is limited to 18. Registration & payment due by Feb. 1st. Class Full April 12 (Saturday) Sandhills Horticultural Society Plant Sale. The Sandhills Horticultural Society will hold its spring plant sale from 8 AM to noon. Perennials, woody plants and bulbs will be for sale at the new horticultural building area (Steed Hall) of Sandhills Community College. For information or to per-order call April 15 (Tuesday) The Language of Flowers. 10AM to 11:30, A program that is sure to provide a fascinating insight into the Victorian tradition of using flowers to convey secret messages. Victoria DesJardin, a floral & event designer formerly of Aldena Frye's, will reveal how flowers came by their meanings in folklore and how flowers became the language of courtship, love, friendship, beauty and more. Discover the meanings behind over 50 flowers and craft a botanical keepsake to take home.
