1 President s Message LINDEN GARDEN CLUB OF PINEWILD Linden Garden Club of Pinewild October 2018 Newsletter We kicked off the on Thursday, September 20 th at the Pine Crest Inn. What a wonderful program we had. Thank you Ellen Burke for taking us on a trip through the gardens of the Impressionists. I for one look forward to our October 18 th meeting back at the Pinewild Clubhouse. Cathy Jones has put together another wonderful program, this time glass blowing from the Star Glass Works in Star, North Carolina. If you have not been to Star, it is an old manufacturing town. Like so many in this part of the state, the manufacturing is gone. It was also a railroad hub. Star is working hard to reinvent itself. A group of artisans interested in glass blowing have taken one of the old factories and set up a school for glass blowers. They sell their pumpkins at Halloween, Christmas balls for the holiday and Easter eggs in the spring. We are looking forward to our theatre date on October 21 at the Hanna Theatre of the O Neal School. Cathy Broutsas has about 35 reservations. That is exciting. This is our first attempt at an endeavor such as this. If it is successful, we will try other out of the box ideas. For those of you who were not at the September meeting. The play is LOVE LOST and WHAT I WORE starring Sally Struthers and Joyce Reehling of the PILOT. It is a matinee and begins at 3:00 p.m. The November issue of the Linden Garden Club Newsletter will feature information about the Christmas Luncheon to be held at the Pine Needles Conference Center on December 13 th. The menu, time and other pertinent information will be enclosed. We will celebrate the 25 th anniversary of the organization. At the September meeting, Lynn Hancock read a really clever original poem to encourage us to donate a check instead of a basket full of stuff which we will then buy raffle tickets to win then put away until next year when we will donate it all over again. She suggested that it would be easier to write a check, indicate that it is for the scholarship fund and put it in the locked box in the room off the ladies room in the clubhouse. Since the clubhouse was closed during the hurricane and then Todd was busy during this past weekend s golf tournament, I have not met with him regarding the menu for the October luncheon. I will meet with him this week and we will send the menu to you under separate cover. See you on October 18th at the Pinewild Clubhouse. The meeting will begin at 10:00 AM. Your president, Margie

5 November Program Highlights Join us on November 15 th at the Pinewild Club House for a delightful talk on the Vanishing Monarch Butterfly with Linda Acker and Beth Spencer of the Village Heritage Foundation. They will also share information on the Village Heritage Foundation s lastest project. The Village Heritage Foundation is a private nonprofit 501(c)3 foundation headquartered in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Their mission is to promote the preservation, restoration, enhancement and maintenance of the special character of the historic Village of Pinehurst. The Foundation was incorporated in 1993 as the Pinehurst Historic Preservation Commission. The name was changed officially to the Village Heritage Foundation (VHF) in A Special Linden Garden Club Event LOVE, LOSS, AND WHAT I WORE Starring Sally Struthers and Joyce Reehling You will love this hilarious contemporary comedy from Nora and Delia Ephron (authors of Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail) about how we mark the events in our lives via the clothes we wear. For all Members who attended the April meeting, Morgan Sills, the Executive Producer of the Judson Theater Company and a Pinehurst native son, educated the club with the history of the JTC and instilled sparks of interest for the October Production. Let s do a "STAG or DRAG" Linden Garden Club event and attend the play on Sunday, October 21st at 3 p.m. and perhaps go out to eat afterwards. We would love to have as group ticket prices are $30 per ticket, discounted from $38. We now have over 35 signed up for this event! 9 Our Linden Garden Linden Garden Clean Up! It was a beautiful sunny day for clean up of the garden after Hurricane Florence hit our area for four days! Cathy Didonato (not pictures) raked the garden and picked up debris with me for several hours on Tuesday after the storm and on that Wednesday, Nancy Mack, Janet Farrell, Jody Young and Margie Butcher cleaned up the area behind the garden that stretches to the 9th green of the Magnolia. This clean up went a long way towards making the entire area around the garden look pristine again! Thank you Ladies! Many thanks, Sandy Perky Gardeners! Join us on Wednesdays! In October we will set Wednesday from 7:30 am to 9:30 am as our gardening time to maintain the garden. Please make a note of this and come and join us! Our garden will be the feature story in the October 2018 issue of Our Community. A garden unfolds us into the seasons, Reminding us always that we are in the cycle ourselves. Frances Mayes
