Let s fill the bus for a fantastic outing! PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE & PRICE FOR THE BUS TRIP! APRIL 23rd 2015 "ANNUAL BUS TRIP" OLD SALEM AND GARDENS WALKING TOUR REPLACEMENTS LTD. Cost: $65.00 (includes lunch and the tickets for visiting Old Salem, bus) Boarding at 7:45 am Depart from parking lot of Pinewild Country Club 8:00 AM time of departure Bus returns at approximately 5:30 pm. Bus Trip to Old Salem and a stop at Replacements Ltd. in Greensboro, NC. If it rains in the morning, we will visit the Reynolda House in Winston-Salem before continuing on to Replacements, LTD. Old Salem is a historic district of Winston-Salem, NC. It is a living history museum that interprets the restored Moravian community. It features beautiful gardens and museums that showcase the culture of the Moravian settlement during the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of the buildings are staffed with skilled interpreters such as tinsmiths, blacksmiths, cobblers, gunsmiths, bakers and carpenters, practicing their trade while interacting with visitors. Approximately 70% of the buildings in the historic area are original!

2 Situated in the heart of Old Salem,Salem College's history began in 1766, when the Moravians, an early Protestant denomination, established the village of Salem. Among the town's early residents were 16 girls and women who walked more than 500 miles from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to join the new community. One of them was 17-year-old Elisabeth Oesterlein, who would be the first teacher of what is now Salem College. Believing that women deserved an education comparable to that given men -- a radical view for that era -- the Moravians began a school for girls in In 1802, it became a boarding school for girls and young women; in 1866, it was renamed Salem Female Academy. Salem began granting college degrees in the 1890s. Today, the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C. ranks Salem College as the oldest women's college in the nation by founding date and the 13th oldest college overall. Salem Academy, a college preparatory/boarding school for girls in grades nine through 12, also shares our 64-acre campus. The Horticulture Program at Old Salem has worked for more than forty years to create a landscape recalling early Salem. Native trees and shrubs have been reintroduced, historic fencing styles separate lots and meadows, and gardens are featured throughout the historic area. Stream reclamation has cleaned waterways, and with a mature tree canopy and passive land use in the historic area, habitat supports a variety of wildlife. Replacements, Ltd. (located in Greensboro, NC has the world's largest selection of old and new dinnerware including china, glassware, silver, and collectibles. The 500,000 square-foot facilities (the size of eight football fields) house an incredible inventory of 12 million pieces in more than 400,000 patterns, some over 100 years old. If you have never been to this store, you are in for a wonderful surprise!

5 FROM JANET PRESIDENTIAL POTPOURRI Pinehurst Beautification Committee loves the Linden Garden Club Molly Rowell, chair of the Pinehurst Beautification Committee needs our help. She wants to continue the delightful floral landscape created for the US Open. She needs our help to plant two beds in the village on Tuesday, May 5th at 1:30 pm. The planting will take place at the corner of Midland Rd and Fields Rd, as well as the corner of Route 5 and McKenzie. Many thanks to Cathy Broutsas, Erna Adams, and Maureen Luebke for volunteering. If anyone else would like to volunteer, please contact Janet Farrell at The beds will be prepared by the Village and the digging will be easy! Linden Garden Club Scholarship Honored On April 2, Janet Farrell will attend the induction ceremony of the Sandhills Community College SUMMA Group, recognizing the college's most distinguished group of supporters. The Linden Garden club has been providing scholarships since 1997 and in 2014, the club raised $2,400 for book scholarships that will be awarded in the 2015 academic year. The SUMMA Group honors those generous donors who have supported the students and the mission of the college at the highest level and are given permanent recognition in the lobby of Owens Auditorium. A big round of applause goes to -- Many thanks to our 2016 June Luncheon Committee volunteers! When our current committee retires this June, the following ladies have stepped in to continue our pot luck tradition. Dolores Flashman - chair, Ginny Fitch, Marie O'Brien, Barb Kenny, Jeanne Leone, Carol Ann Palmquist. Did you know that in June our current committee will be together for 3 years? Kudos to Jeane Kays, BJ Barrett, Jackie Collins, Karen Fogle, Ginny Notestine, Dianne Schultz, and Suzanne Wright.

6 More potpourri... At our March meeting Matt Hollyfield provided the Linden Garden Club with wonderful tips on creating centerpieces from things around the house and in our yards. Here are some highlights from his presentation: Put your longest branches in your container first. General rule is to have your height 1 ½ times the height of your container, but don t let this stifle your creativity Insert your stems on a diagonal Hydrangeas can be a challenge so after cutting, submerge their heads in water for 5 minutes. They drink through the head. You can also add a teaspoon of Alum powder sold in the spice aisle to keep the stems from sealing. (Alum powder, found in the spice section of many grocery stores, may be used in pickling recipes as a preservative to maintain fruit and vegetable crispness). Hydrangeas should not be put into your floral foam --- leave a water reservoir at the edge of your foam and place the hydrangeas into the water, not the foam. Matt recommends that if you plan to use hydrangeas in your arrangement you should plan to use a smaller piece of foam so you can have ample water for the hydrangeas. If you are using Gerbera daisies, place them in a tight arrangement where the greenery and the other flowers will support the heavy Gerbera daisy head. Never have foliage under the water. As it deteriorates it creates bacteria that will kill your flowers. Place greens between monochromatic flowers. Matt demonstrated this with a vase of white hydrangea. As soon as he separated the monochromatic flowers the arrangement popped and the flowers really took form and stood out. Limit yourself to 3 colors you will like the result Add height to your arrangement with cuttings of rosebud, forsythia, willow. Matt uses floral foam in most containers shorter cuts of flowers and greenery are needed when you put floral foam in a container and this means you can optimize your greenery Matt keeps his floral foam 1 ½ inches above his container so that the greens and flowers can be inserted at a downward angle to add movement to your arrangement Manipulate long pieces to curve as you want them to. Branches are quite pliable. He also demonstrated running a knife along one side of a feather to bend it Try using oasis on top of a large candlestick. You can attach your foam with floral tape (green tape that works in wet conditions). Ground high arrangements with some smaller floral pieces at the base. This is what he does for high table arrangements at weddings Crystal clear is Matt s preferred product to add to the water Remove stamen from lilies to avoid staining. Pam cooking spray will remove the stain from your hands. Tulips like to follow the sun. Put some small score marks just under the tulip head and it won t follow the light. Simply score down the stem about 1 inch. For small containers, make your own floral frog using florist wire around the bottom of a small bouquet. Place the small bouquet in your container and it will hold any additional stems you use. Try adding a small twisted branch to your small arrangement to add height (whimsy) Wreaths: when making wreaths, Matt adds his greenery, then his ribbon. The flowers go in last. He also recommends gluing things between the ribbon loops, like dried moss. Try suction cups on a glass door at the bottom of the wreath to keep it from moving when the door is used. Catch the hook on the wreath and push the suction cup to the glass door.
