1 Board Briefs A Newsletter from The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. Board of Directors Volume XII Edition II Autumn 2013 Linda Ragland, Editor. Dear Friends, Isn't it hard to believe that September is here! Although September is usually a hot month, we know cooler weather is on the way. With the fall comes a very busy time for all members of The Garden Club of Georgia. In addition to all of our fall duties in our gardens, October brings our seven District Meetings. These meetings are wonderful times to learn about the projects of GCG and the Districts from the displays prepared by District chairmen. The programs are always interesting and informative. However, as wonderful as these things are, they are not the best part of the meetings. The best part is renewing old friendships and meeting new people. There will be some new items in the GCG Ways and Means. If you missed the opportunity to buy a new GCG Club President's pin for your club president and a GCG Past Club President's pin for all of your club's former Presidents at your District Awards Workshop or Club Officers' Workshop, you may get them at your District Meetings. In addition to the District Meetings, this October brings Landscape Design Consultants, Environmental Consultants, and Gardening Consultants the opportunity to refresh at a Trirefresher in Augusta on October 4-5. Those interested in becoming Gardening Consultants can take the first of the four required courses in Plains on October An Environmental Studies School will be held on November 4-5 in Valdosta. Please take advantage of the opportunity to take these courses in our own state. It's time to start thinking about the Awards your club might win. Check out the awards section on our website ( to get the latest in award information. Remember that Yearbook and Flower Show Schedule award applications are due October 15. Many of the others are due on December 1. Enjoy the fall and all it brings your way. In all of your activities remember to Scatter Joy as We Bloom and Grow. See you at your District Meeting! Suzanne Editor s note: You will find lovely must haves at this website:

4 Environmental Studies School in Valdosta The Camellia District of The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., is sponsoring an Environmental Studies School (ESS) with courses to be held in Valdosta and Tifton, according to Virginia Pennington, Course Chairman. The course is open to both National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC) members and non-members. Course 1, to be held in Valdosta on November 4th and 5th, offers a two-hour natural site field trip to Lake Louise, which will provide an extraordinary experience for participants, and a rare public glimpse at one of South Georgia s best-kept secrets, as described by Bradley J. Bergstrom, Ph.D., a Valdosta State University (VSU) Biology Professor who will be leading this segment. Lake Louise is a 13-acre black water lake surrounded by a 170-acre property owned and maintained by VSU as an outdoor laboratory. 14 Roadside Beautification Kathryn Litton, Chairman This is a reminder for all clubs to allocate money in their budgets for a donation to the Roadside Beautification Fund. For those who donate $25 or more, a certificate of recognition will be presented at the appropriate time. Budget cutbacks in funding for Highway Beautification in our state highway program make it even more important to give as much as we can to help keep our major highways and interstates beautiful. Many clubs are making donations as a memorial to a beloved garden club member who has passed on. This is a wonderful way to recognize the contribution that has been made by that person to the club. Notes of recognition will be sent to the family members when proper addresses are included with the donation. The donations are accumulated into a special restricted fund in Garden Club of Georgia, then when a sizeable amount is obtained this money is then presented to the Georgia Department of Transportation for their special restricted fund that is only used to plant daffodils and flowers along the major highways. Travelers from all over the nation who use our roads then get to enjoy the beauty that Georgia has to offer. Give generously to this fund; use the proper forms that are available on the GCG website, and send the money to the state treasurer with proper identification. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP

15 Where to Send Your GCG Donations,

16 Pull and Save Tabs for Ronald McDonald House I hope you have all been saving tabs this summer and will be bringing them to your Fall District meetings in October. You delivered over 96lbs to the State Convention in April. Last year the 7 districts collected 2,056 pounds of tabs amounting to a monetary donation of $ to Ronald McDonald House Charities. Azalea District came in 1st place for collecting the largest amount with Oleander & Laurel getting 2nd & 3rd place. Redbud, Dogwood, Camellia & Magnolia followed in that order. Ronald McDonald Houses are Homes Away from Home for many families that have seriously ill or injured children receiving treatments in a nearby hospital. These homes provide beds, food, a place to do laundry, rest and be with other families in a similar situation, but most important to be near their child. All tabs are taken to the Ronald McDonald Houses or recycle centers in each district. Money collected is used toward items needed to make quests comfortable. Please continue to support this Special Project and make your District #1 at the 2014 State Convention. Be sure to put your Club's Name, Town & District on your containers. Listed below are the district Chairman's name, & phone number. If you need any further information or help, please contact your district Chairman or Betty Davis, State Chairman, Phone , bettyboop2315@yahoo.com. 17 Wild & Wonderful Experience The 6th Annual Wild & Wonderful Experience camp at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center in Mansfield has ended with so many new memoires for the campers and counselors, alike. During July we dodged all the raindrops and camp went on as each met many new friends, learning together during our camping experience. With 18 campers, 4 GCG members and 2 staff members from CEWC we had a GREAT Camp! Hiking and learning Native American lore, fishing, a stream study, visiting with endangered species, container gardening, collage natural materials designs, painting bird houses & studies, astronomy and much more gave new understanding to nature and the world around us. We are thankful for all your support of the Wild & Wonderful Experience camp and hope you will continue to share this mission with children in your lives. As they prepare to enter 5th or 6th Grades, they too can join us at the 7th annual GCG Wild & Wonderful Experience Camp! Our next date is July 1315, 2014; mark your calendar and we ll see you at camp!
