2 Policy Context TTI features significantly in the ITS Action Plan, the ITS Directive and the CEN-ETSI response to Mandate M/453 on Co-operative Systems Standardization ITS Action Plan 1.1 Definition of procedures for the provision of EU-wide real-time traffic and travel information services 1.4 Definition of specifications for data and procedures for the free provision of minimum universal traffic information services 2.1 Definition of a set of common procedures and specifications to ensure the continuity of ITS services for passenger and freight in transport corridors and in urban/interurban regions. This work should include information flows traffic management 2

6 RDS-TMC DATEX (I) Development Path Flavours In the early 1990s there was a vision of a wholly aligned TPEG -stack Binary of exchange protocols for TPEG different -XML bearers and TPEG 2 bandwidths, but the development DATEX-ASN US / ISO DATEX (II) Europe }Over Air Broadcast 1990 s 2000 s 2010 s resources & communities of interest diverged as protocols CAMbecame specialised for intended purposes DENM Cooperative }Systems DATEX I had a complex defined mapping to ALERT-C but this has disappeared }Fixed centre to centre exchange

7 DATEX II TPEG Alignment Joint development of: TISA (TPEG developers) EasyWay (DATEX II developers) CEN/TC 278 Working Group 8 (DATEX II standardiser) CEN/TC 278 WG 4 and ISO/TC 204 WG10 (TPEG standardiser) Initial discussion in Summer 2010 Shared agreement that alignment is important in a European context, especially considering the development of cooperative systems 7

8 DATEX II TPEG Alignment -Approach Establishment of an MoU between EasyWay and TISA Focus DATEX II => TPEG exchange Adoption of practicalapproach looking at small discrete parts first -as both specifications are rich, large & complex, but with the intention to extend if successful Planned demonstrator at ITS Europe Congress in Lyon, 6-9 June 8

9 Impact on Standards Challenges for Standardisation Different stages of development of DATEX II, TPEG and ALERT C, plus CAM & DENM but all have reached some degree of maturity Different communities of interest With different requirements of granularity of information Ties into several Standards development communities ISO/TC204 WG10 & CEN/TC278 WG4, CEN/TC278 WG8, ETSI TC ITS WG1 Impact of alignment work may require some level of rework over time, or definition of standardised mappings 9

10 Final Thoughts We need to think and act holistically and collaboratively Establishing a single common data dictionary/registry for all these standards, and others, is an essential tool With good will, we can do it! But this is just one area requiring alignment Location Referencing methods are complex and becoming increasingly so 10
