Fundamental idea of Earthquake Early Warning Rapid event detection - Few seconds to few tens of seconds Event characterization from early data (P-wave detection) Dissemination of warning ahead of shaking Both automatic and human-mediated responses Filename, 7
Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) First Concept: to use instruments that are more sensitive than human to warn of oncoming seismic waves Second Concept: to use network of sensors that are far away to warn of coming waves. In general for an earthquake: Fault ruptures A fast-moving pressure wave (P-Wave) moves through the earth and reaches the receiver first. Sensor will sort through the constant ongoing noise and determine, is this is an earthquake? More damaging shear-waves (S-Waves) come after. Can be 5 to 20 seconds warning? Networked sensors can add warning time: few seconds to few tens of seconds Filename, 8
Where is EEW used? Learning about EEW in Japan Filename, 9
BC Earthquake Early Warning Network (BCEEWN) Project A network of sensors to improve earthquake early warning Started as a collaborative effort between UBC/BCMoT/BCMEd/RCAV/GSC (PGC) Added benefit: Additional warning time! Filename, 10
UBC TETRA Sensor for EEW A sensor for Seismic Early Warning & Strong Ground motion State-of-the-art technology specifically developed for BC Internet-based system High sensitivity, self-orienting, programmable Can be used above and below ground, and underwater Can measure ground shaking, magnetism & temperature Filename, 11

Alarms If possible School PA system will be integrated to be used as the alarm Otherwise a School will have sirens installed Some schools need to be tested for adequate volume levels All alarm controls need access to the internet PA systems and/or Sirens provide for the early warning alarm. Unique identifiable message or sound Filename, 16
Typical Site / School Installation Prime Node Site: 2 Tetra Sensors, min of 100 ft. apart outside of main building Trenching from Tetras and cabling to the Computer Server/ Internet supply point. 20 Summary of Budget Costs Budget Costs: Initial costs would be borne by the sponsoring body e.g. Veritas School and Sacred Heart Parish Budget amount = $60,000 Other alarm only sites can then be added to the EEWS at a Budget amount = $30,000 Of this amount, approximately $10,000 would be paid back to the contributing control site. Example: Initial sponsoring site: $ 60,000 Say 11 other schools: $330,000 $390,000 of which $110,000 would be paid back to the Sponsor Filename, 20
