2 Page 2 John Street Park Thank You We would like to thank those who braved the cold and wind to help with the cleanup at John Street Park on April 21st and again on May 5 th. Ersine Abdhula, Colombe Charest, Dave Chevrier, Rachelle Corrigan, Theresa Cullum, Ed Decker, Uta Decker, Don Ethier, Madeleine Genier, Linda Hugli, Wayne Hugli, Barb Knuff, Joanne Matte, Caitlin McAuliffe, Cassidy McAuliffe, Georgette Mitchell, Bob Muraska, Pat O Grady, Jane Palmer, Rick Reynen, Lisa Robinson, Nadia Snajdr, and Sue Turgeon Ersin Abdhula, Nadia Snajdr, Sue Turgeon, and Barb Knuff thank you to "PLANET EARTH ORGANIC LANDSCAPING AND GARDENING" for the donation of a load of garden mix that was used to top-dress the area under the pin cherry trees. T (above: Spring below: this spring) The Pin Cherry Garden The area beneath the pin cherry trees was created last spring by Hermina, Keirann Santala, and friend John. The ground was levelled and huge stones were transported from the edge of the park to create flowerbeds. Paving stones were set into place for the cement bench to rest. It has become a peaceful haven to remember Hermine Calyn and Erik Hansen.

3 The Sudbury Master Gardeners & The Sudbury Horticultural Society Present a Spring Gardening Seminar Sunday, May 16th, 1 pm to 4 pm CNIB on York Street Speakers: John Renaud Myke and the Soil Food Web Suzanne Hanna - If Weeds Could Talk Ron Lewis The Challenges of Organic Vegetable Gardening Admission is $10 at the door, and includes light refreshments For further information, contact Linda at webmaster@sudburyhorticulturalsociety.ca or Ask the Master Gardeners Question: This summer will be our first summer in our new home. We have a beautiful large backyard that backs onto a ravine and much of it is tree covered. I am looking to create a perennial garden and would like lots of colour. In this area there is a lot of moss. So I am wondering how to conquer this, what plants would give me the colour but not need a lot of light, and will the moss cause problems? Answer: It sounds as though you have a lovely new property, Tracey. It seems that you'll need to do some site preparation though. Causes of excessive moss include compacted soils, poorly drained soils, low soil fertility, high or low soil ph, and poor air circulation. You may have to prune back your trees and shrubs to improve the air circulation and sunlight penetration. Dig lots of compost into the soil before you begin to plant your perennials. You can also add horticultural limestone, but only if a ph test indicates that your soil it too acidic. Your local nurseries can help you to select shade tolerant plants. Most plant tags also indicate light preferences. Enjoy your new gardening adventure!
