5 News From the Boardroom 1. Shelby Woolnough, Virginia Langis and Theresa Cullum planted the Diabolo Ninebark at the Capreol Peace Garden in memory of Peter Woolnough. Donations from the Society and from Pat O Grady covered the cost. Pat will donate some coneflower and liatris plants for the park. 2. Georgette Mitchell and Theresa Cullum purchased a Tiny Wine Ninebark at Southview Greenhouse Growers for CNIB, in memory of Frank Vettoretti. After receiving permission from CNIB to remove the ailing cedar, Georgette will replace it with the Ninebark. 3. Garden Ontario Week: This year we will be walking the Jane Goodall Reclamation Trail, with Dr. Peter Beckett, Saturday, June 16 from 10 to noon. We may consider making the Hospice event our annual Garden Ontario Week activity because of their on-going need for support. Ada Petretti is part of that group. 4. John Street Park: Pat has plants that he grew for John Street Park the remainder will be purchased, this year, from Southview Greenhouse Growers. The planting is this Wednesday, June Garden-related magazines for the Little Lending Library would be appreciated; these can be dropped off any time when visiting John Street Park. As well, Georgette will ask South End Library for their old garden-related magazines. The $23,000 received for the project will be split evenly between both schools. The plan is to provide five trees in raised beds at both schools. VETAC is awaiting approval from the Public School Board before finalizing plans. Society and Master Gardener volunteers will work with the students at Confederation High School to help develop gardens in the area by the soccer field and in the school courtyard. The school has added a plaque to their courtyard garden commemorating Pinecrest Public School, and transplanted many of the shrubs and perennials from that school when it was closed and put up for sale. 8. Community Gardens: Food Forest is looking for volunteers to water the gardens. Contact Carrie Regenstreif at carrie@sudburysharedharvest.ca if interested. Photos of the Gardening Festival Wayne Hugli has created a SMUGMUG gallery of the photos taken by Society photographer Lisa Robinson and posted a link to them on our Facebook page - and website CNIB Gardens: Georgette Mitchell planted Karl Foerster grasses donated by Shelby Woolnough, and some blue fescue grasses along the front walkway. Laura Foreshew, Frankie Vitone, and Connie Dubois helped her plant the annuals ordered from Stuart McCall. 7. Ugliest Schoolyard Contest: The committee held a judging session, which Georgette Mitchell and Lisa Robinson attended. They chose the following schools: Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School and Confederation Secondary School, both of which recently welcomed grades 7 & 8 students, but do not have suitable outdoor spaces for them. continued.. Thanks to Lisa, we are pleased to share some highlights of this year's Sudbury Gardening Festival at If you wish to download any of those photos for your own use, left click on the image to enlarge it and then right click on it to "save image as" or "copy image" onto your computer.

6 A Section from "The Garden" - a Memory by Dorothy Pattison When delivering a blooming African Violet plant to my elderly family friend, Hermine Calyn, some years ago, it was suggested I attend the upcoming Sudbury Horticultural Society Summer Flower Show at the Carmichael Arena. This I did, and her daughter, young Hermina, soon had me convinced to join the local horticultural society where that family had been members for many years. When I mentioned my decision to attend winter monthly meetings to my good friend Alison, she said "That sounds like a great idea! - May I join you?". So began interesting Sunday afternoon outings to learn more about the intricacies of gardening from local speakers. I was quite surprised at the large number of Sudbury members in attendance at those events and how well the organization was run. The social aspect was always very pleasant! My considerate horticultural companion gave me a subscription to a gardening magazine one Christmas and whilst browsing through the springtime copy, I began thinking about my own garden. Perhaps I should describe it for the record. The lot size, including house is 150' by 100' street frontage. The back yard is quite simple, mainly grass with a row of red pine trees on the west side and occasional spruce trees that we planted from seedlings several years ago, and which are now very tall evergreens. The yard consists of a small triangular perennial bed, a double compost bin my handyman husband created from wooden posts and lattice sheets, a 20' by 2' raised herb bed near the house, and a narrow annuals bed visible from the kitchen window. I change the annual plants each year to offer new colour or variety to the bed so it remains stimulating to view and to check the progress of each type of plant to discover the ones I prefer. I also have assorted tulip bulbs there to make a colourful spring start to the late growing season here in Northern Ontario. In the approximate centre of the backyard is a very special tree the Silver Maple. This was planted as a tiny maple wing seed found in the roadway nearby in I planted it up into a pot and waited to see if it would grow - indeed it did! That year we were hosting a birthday party for my husband Ed. Several family members and friends came to our spacious backyard for refreshments to celebrate. It was pre-planned for Ed to plant the now-thriving seedling into the prepared ground on that particular day and we all took photos of this simple ceremony. Every year thereafter, for 10 years, I took a new photo of Ed standing beside his ever-increasing-in-height special maple tree. It is lovely to watch each spring as it bursts into fresh new, green leaves from the curled buds. By midsummer its full foliage is fantastic! Now it provides summer shade for our south-facing backyard, and the leaves change color to a delightful soft yellow/orange hue in autumn. We are very happy with Ed's hand-planted maple tree It gives us much pleasure. Dorothy
