2 New Board of Directors Again this year, Donna Butson (below) our Assistant Director for Sudbury, presided over the installation of our new Board of Directors. We welcome new members Jill Bennett, Laura Foreshew, Chris Nash, and Ada Petretti. Also, congratulations on the following appointments: 1 st Vice president: Barbara Knuff and 2 nd Vice President: Connie Dubois. Congratulations to Award Winners For entries in the 2016 Society Flower, Vegetable, and Design Shows, the winners are: Uta Decker (most points in Housplants spring show, and Best Floral Design Christmas); Hermina Hubert (most points -Hobbyist Arts & Crafts); Richard Toivonen (most points -Special Photo Classes); Barb Ecker (most points -cut specimens); Stuart McCall (most points Vegetables tied with Ron Lewis); and Lisa Robinson, recipient of the Society gift for most accummulated points (as well as best Floral Design spring show, most points - Photography all year, and most points in each of our three exhibitions). 3 SOCIETY GENERAL MEETING Sunday, February 26 at the CNIB Refreshments at 1:15 pm Meeting begins at 2:00. Guest Speaker: Joshua Terry Alpacas and Gardening go Hand in Hand Door prizes - 50/50 - White elephant table finds Introducing Our Guest Speaker Joshua terry and his family own and operate the Dare 2 Dream Alpaca Farm and Sandy Loam Produce, near Espanola. He is featured below at last year s Gardening Festival with his alpaca knitwear. Joshua has expanded his business to include chickens, eggs, produce, and alpaca gold. We started the gardening operation in the Spring of 2013 with nothing more than an old hay field and the idea that, if someone else can do it, so can we. We started out with three gardens totaling roughly an acre. We set out to see what we could grow and take to the market for sale. Then two years ago, we started the Customer Shared Agriculture (CSA) program. This program is a weekly pick up of vegetables, herbs, and spices that are supplied throughout the growing season. This is supplied entirely from us and what comes from our gardens. We are now in our third CSA season, and with some new infrastructure and a whole lot of work, we are expanding our operation. We are now even into Flowers. OPEN GARDEN WEEKEND 2017 We would like to suggest that you mark your calendar and save the date June The 2017 Open Garden Weekend will be held in June, rain or shine. It is being held earlier this year, to make it possible to view a lovely rose garden which will be at its finest at that time of the year. Stay tuned for further information

5 SEEDY SATURDAY - March 4 at Parkside Centre/YMCA 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Our Guest Speakers Dr. Jennifer Babin-Fenske Operation Pollination : Inviting Insects Back into Our Lives (10:30 am) A proud Nova Scotian, Dr. Jennifer Babin-Fenske found a passion for insects during her Applied Zoology undergraduate degree at McGill University. She then moved to Sudbury for a Master's involving whirligig beetles and a Ph.D. involving soil insects. Her position as the Coordinator of EarthCare Sudbury Initiatives at the City of Greater Sudbury allows her to share her interest of protecting the environment and enhancing our local biodiversity. She helps her own children explore and invite insects into their lives and home as their annual temporary pet is selected from their backyard and reared from a caterpillar to a pupa, then a moth. She will speak about insect pollinators found in the Greater Sudbury area and how we can invite them back into our lives. Diane Labelle Growing, Harvesting, and Exploring Herbs in Recipes! (11:30 am) Diane Labelle is passionate about food. She loves to experiment with herbs. Learn how to grow, harvest, freeze and dry your own herbs. Explore the benefits of using fresh herbs from your own herb garden in tasty dishes. Thomas Benian From Nectar to Honey (12:30pm) Thomas is a beekeeper in the Spanish area, well-versed in all aspects of bee life and honey production. He emigrated from Czechoslovakia in In 2005, Thomas started beekeeping as a hobby with 2 colonies. Inspiration came from his father who had always wanted to be a Beekeeper. He loves his bees and keeps learning more and more each year, They keep surprising me each new year of beekeeping. So I don't think I will ever catch up. I enjoy sharing what I have learned about these wonderful creatures. Telicia and Kevin Lolas Seed Sharing (1:30 pm) Telicia and Kevin are co-owners of Northern Heirloom Vegetables. They will enlighten us on the importance of saving and sharing seeds.

Sunflower Growing Competition, organized by the Community Gardens Network, has asked for funding. Our Society is willing to contribute a maximum of $200 per year towards the competition. 5. Special presentation Wednesday June 14: an evening with David Hobson, 7:00 pm at the Lexington Hotel. Save that date! More details to follow in next newsletter. This will take place during Garden Ontario Week June 11 to 17. At least one other activity is being considered for that week. 6. A Floral Design Workshop is in the planning stages. We have not yet decided the date nor the theme. 7. Also in planning stages is the Judging School for our District 13. Chris Nash will be organizing. More details to follow.
