1 The Newsletter February 2011 Rudbeckia hirta ( Black-eyed Susan ) Editor: Hermina Hubert Phone: herminahubert@yahoo.com. Membership: Claire Liinamaa Phone: claire_nl@sympatico.ca Visit our web site: www. sudburyhorticulturalsociety.ca Dedicated to the beautification of the Sudbury region and the preservation of our environment The Board of Directors for 2011 (above) Missing from photo is Jessie MacIsaac. Life-long friends: Aloma Johnson toasts to our Anniversary with Claire.

2 Book Review #4 - by Jessica Watts Fruit and Berry Gardening for Canada by Louise Donnelly and Alison Beck Page 2 Though not traditionally thought of as a 'fruitful' area to grow fruits and berries, Sudbury gardeners may be surprised at the variety of plants they can grow when provided with the proper techniques. Donnelly and Beck provide a comprehensive introduction providing gardeners with selection, planting, propagation, pruning, and even ways to combat pests and disease. In addition to the expert advice, this book also contains an alphabetised list of popular fruits and berries with recommendations on how to make them flourish. While growing peaches may not be in the future for the Sudbury gardener, why not try any one of the many other varieties of fruits and berries highlighted in this highly informative book. Free Download from Big Fish Games The free download gives you one free hour of play. You play it once and then delete it (uninstall). It is called 'Plants versus Zombies'. The commentator of the segment was mentioning the importance of grand gardens around grand buildings. This one happened to be the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The curved paths compliment the stainless steel curves of the building. Exotic trees that bloom at different times of the concert season were lifted by crane to create a colourful rooftop garden. 4 Page 4 CREATIVE CONTAINERS (the Appeal, the Potential and the Possibilities) An Evening With Paul Zammit Friday May 27, :30 pm Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel $10.00 for SHS Members / $15.00 for non-members Tickets will be available at all Sudbury Horticultural Society events and meetings in February, March and April. Pick up your tickets early and enter a draw for two tickets to dinner with Paul Zammit and the SHS Board of Directors before his presentation. Ask the Master Gardeners Question from Richard: For many years I have used No-Damp to prevent the damping off of seedlings started indoors under lights. This product has been discontinued and I am looking for a replacement product. Please don't suggest cultural practices as an alternative. I just want to know if there is a replacement treatment available that works. Answer: I have two suggestions. First, try topping off your seed start pots with a thin layer of sand. This can help keep moisture off the stems at soil level. The other idea, which I have tried successfully, is to water your starts with Chamomile tea. I do not have a definitive scientific source for this method, but it seems to work. The tea should be about the same strength as you would drink, steeped three to five minutes and then cooled to room-temperature. Apparently the Chamomile discourages the damping-off organisms. Also, be sure the room temperature is warm enough. Cool temperatures seem to encourage damping off.

5 DO YOU KNOW A STUDENT WHO IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER HOURS?
