2 Community Gardens: OHA NEWS The OHA is establishing a grant program to support the creation or the upgrading of community gardens by a horticultural society. The board will approve the criteria for the grant at the fall Board Meeting. That criteria and an application form will be published in the Winter Trillium. There will be up to two $500 grants awarded per year. Grants will be available to societies in the spring of Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth: To commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth, the Ontario Horticultural Association will award three grants of $600 each to be given to a postgraduate student whose research is in an area that will benefit gardeners in Ontario. Awards have been given to three students, one from the Department of Plant Agriculture, University of Guelph; one from the Department of Biology, York University; and one from the Department of Forestry, Lakehead University. Also, to commemorate the Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth, the OHA, through its Districts, have planted a Bur Oak in each of its 19 Districts. Oaks were chosen because at the time of King George s Coronation, acorns from the oaks in Windsor Great Park as Windsor Castle were shipped to Canada to be planted across the country. Coronation Oaks, as they were called, still stand in Ontario. An oak seemed an appropriate tree to commemorate the 60th anniversary of that Coronation. The Bur Oak was chosen because it has a wide range in Ontario. Seeds of Diversity Canada: Donation to the Elliot Lake Society The Elliot Lake Horticultural Society expresses its thanks to the Sudbury Society for its kind offer of a $100. donation to us after the collapse of the Mall. We have taken on the project at White Mountain Academy here in Elliot Lake to re-do the Atrium. Plans are now becoming more structured and the list of plants is quite extensive (and probably a kind of wish list too, as our original budget has been scaled down). To date, some of the White Mountain staff are working on calling greenhouses etc. to get prices and availability this time of year for some of the plants and trees on the list. The Board for White Mountain have requested that we plant things before October 30th at which time they plan to have an opening. Originally, we thought the major planting would be in the spring, so the crunch is on! We will apply later on for one of the OHA tree grants as well. Thank you once again. Margaret Vivyurka Assistant Director for Sudbury The OHA will support Seeds of Diversity Canada s resolve to seek funding for a mutual initiative with fully shared goals and outcomes for the direct benefit of Seedy Saturday events and their local organizing committees. Suzanne Hanna is coordinating this on behalf of the OHA. Future Conventions: 2013 Convention - Thunder Bay, District Convention - Cornwall, District 1

3 Dates to Remember Nov Annual General Meeting & Christmas Show Dec. 2 - First Advent & Annual General Meeting Sunday, November 25 at CNIB Theme: A Canadian Winter - Election to fill board positions - Awards and Trophies Entertainment by the Sudbury Chamber Singers Bring entries between 10:00 am & 11:30 at which time judging will take place. Check pages 62 and 63 in the yearbook for classes. View the seasonal entries while enjoying coffee & desserts from 1:15 pm Door prizes, 50/50, New Selection of Magazines and White Elephant Table items Dec. 9 - Hanukkah Dec First Day of Winter Jan General Meeting CNIB Can You Bake Cookies? It would really be a treat to have some homemade cookies and squares to with our tea and coffee at the Christmas Show...they are always soooo good. If you feel like contributing a few of your gems, please bring them to the kitchen around 1:00 pm. Thank you so much. Workshop at Finlandia Colombe Charest visited Finlandia Koti to do a presentation and workshop on African Violets with some of the residents there. They seemed to enjoy the craft session. Everyone had interesting questions and at the end they were are relaxed and were even joking around. It was a good day for me, I enjoyed it. - Colombe Charest Website of the Month Azilda Botanix suggests this link to a great article from the University of Michigan on Tree Care: /horticulture/dg1411.html As you may already know, trees and evergreens need extra watering in the fall because their roots continue to take up water after all the other plants are finished for the season. Empty those rain barrels onto your evergreens as soon as they fill up after a rainfall.

4 Grow-a-Row program - by Doreen Ojala The Grow A Row program is now closed for the season! Thank you to everyone who donated, and attended various activities sponsored by The Foodshed Project and the Ontario Tillium Foundation. A special thanks to the Sudbury Horticultural Society, Master Gardeners and EarthCare Sudbury for financial donations towards the Row Markers, the Garden Planner, and for promotion. Also to all of the community gardens who donated, as well as those individuals who took the time to care!. More and more folks are depending on food banks and need our support. Visit us on Facebook to view pictures of the Grow A Row program: If you want pictures of your garden posted on this facebook site, please send them to me. If you are interested in sitting on a Grow A Row Committee for 2013, please let me know. The Foodshed Project will continue to help coordinate food from "gardens to food banks" and encourage people to start low-maintenance gardens to grow peas, beans, onions, carrots and salad greens - for themselves and to donate. The Sudbury Master Gardeners Southview Greenhouse Growers BEDDING PLANTS - GERANIUMS - PERENNIALS TREES - SHRUBS - FALL MUMS Joe Reid 2500 Southview Drive Tel: (705) Sudbury, ON.
