1 THE MAINLANDER VOLUME 4 ISSUE 7 JULY & AUGUST 2013 NEW MAINLANDER DISTRIBUTION PROCESS At a special Board meeting held on June 17th, a new plan for distribution of the MAINLANDER was proposed and approved. Effective with the September edition, the Association will no longer hand deliver them to each residence. Homeowners wishing to obtain copies of this publication may pick them up in the Administration Building. Homeowners who may have personal computers with internet access may download and/or print an E-file edition in color at no charge. These changes are being made due to a shrinking pool of volunteers to handle door-to-door delivery. X All future homeowner requests to obtain a FOB device should preferably be ed to Mickey in the office- mickey@main12.comcastbiz.net Please note: FOB awards are made contingent upon the balance status of maintenance accounts and having no outstanding property violations against Association rules or regulations. Warning: DO NOT IMMERSE YOUR FOB IN THE POOLS!

4 Page 4 THE MAINLANDER Attention Homeowners: Please take a look at the condition of your roof and your driveway again. If they are soiled, or in need of repair, you may want to take steps to investigate the costs and determine a reasonable budget for any work necessary. Inspections are now underway and letters will soon go out to owners about violations, The City of Tamarac has their inspectors out now as well. Shingle Roofs and How to Clean Them Homeowners have expressed their concern about having their shingle roofs cleaned. The Board of Directors, in their efforts to provide concerned homeowners with accurate and pertinent information, looked into this problem and came up with a solution that would keep our Community looking great while adhering to the recommendations of the City of Tamarac and our governing documents. There is a product called M-1 Deck and Roof Cleaner.* This cleaner is designed to clean dirty roofs and decks and kill the mildew organism which can be hazardous to our health. This product, available at Home Depot, comes in a gallon container which must be diluted 9:1 or make up a solution of 10 gallons when diluted. (One gallon of M-1 Deck and Roof Cleaner and 9 gallons of water). It is water based, non toxic, biodegradable and contains no phosphates or bleach, noncorrosive and odorless. Being free of bleach, it will not harm shingles or bleach wood. For those of you that have internet service, you may go to and do a search for M-1 Deck and Roof Cleaner. This, and all other such products, should be applied according to manufacturer instructions and properly rinsed off. It is not recommended to pressure clean shingles. There is also a number where homeowners can get additional information if needed. This product is not expensive and it is recommended that you have this done by an experienced person and please, take extreme care if you decide to get up on your roof and attempt to do this yourself. *Note: This is but just one option to clean shingle roofs and it is to be noted that Mainlands 1 & 2 does not endorse or recommend any particular mode, product or company.

7 Volume 4 Issue 7 Page 7 We Love Doggies Please, when you walk your dogs, have them on a leash for their safety and the safety of others as well. Please be a good neighbor and pick up after your dog. It is unfair to expect nature to take care of this for you and is an unsanitary and unwelcome sight. THANKS!

8 Page 8 THE MAINLANDER Fun of A Different Kind In Mainlands 1 & 2 Since its beginning in 2008, the Creative Writing Program has grown and prospered. Each year, class members learn new and different aspects of the writer s craft and use these ideas and concepts in many, varied, and some unusual creative self tasks. The contributions of all class members are compiled into an annual literary magazine which is distributed at a celebration brunch on the last day of class. In September, we will commence our sixth year with a course entitled, A Potpourri of Creativity. This exploration of intellect, imagination and emotion will differ from past practice in two ways: 1. The course will not be centered on a specific focus/theme. What this means is that class members will have the opportunity to write about what is of interest to them in the broad areas of fiction, non-fiction or poetry. 2. In order to accommodate individual time management needs, two (2) options for participation will be available (full or audit). Depending upon which option is selected, a writing sample may be requested. Some preliminary information: Orientation date (for new class members) - Thursday August 29th at 9:30 a.m. at Mainlands 1 & 2 clubhouse -- coffee and cake will be served and there will be an opportunity to meet current members of our wonderful class. This session is intended for those who have registered for the course. Start date: Thursday, September 5, 2013 Tentative end date: Thursday, May 8, 2014 We will meet on selected Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Mainlands 1 & 2 clubhouse. Whether you have a talent or just a passing interest in creative expression, you are welcome. If you have some general questions, wish to review the course calendar, and/or register, feel free to call Nancy Major, class secretary, at (954) or just -- If your questions/concerns are more specific/personal, I ll be happy to chat with you -- (954) There has been an interest shown in purchasing our fifth anniversary literary magazine, Creative Minds. If you need information on this, call Nancy Major. Ed Huckemeyer, Instructor
