We can also meet the challenge of adaptive reuse, when a structure like a former residence is chosen to be repurposed to function as an office building. Tire Discounters Corporate Headquarters Kiessling Architecture provided space planning, design development, and construction documents services to tailor existing office space to the needs of a new tenant. We proposed early space plan concepts for open-office workstations that were then developed in greater detail by the tenant s furniture vendor/installer. We also designed additional restrooms for staff, at the client s request, including a private restroom for the executive. (interior design by Carla Wood) Administrative Office Building for Lindner Center of HOPE (LCOH) Mason, Ohio While their new treatment center was still under construction in 2008, LCOH administrators realized that they had underestimated the need for clinical space, so they decided to move the executive/administrative offices into a 70-year old house on the LCOH campus. KAI s design for adaptive reuse of the house as an office building allowed the new treatment center to open on schedule with sufficient clinical space. Two new staff workstations (shown in the bottom photo) are in a space once occupied by a bedroom. The existing roof pitch and dormers were left intact. Jewish Hospital Cardiac Catheterization Lab To accommodate new equipment, the existing cath lab s infrastructure had to be upgraded. Our team designed a new overhead structure that carries the load of equipment, and braces it against sway, as it slides on ceiling-mounted rails. The room s existing sprinkler, HVAC, and electrical systems were reconfigured or replaced to meet the new cath equipment specifications. Virtually all the infrastructure is concealed above new ceilings, behind new wall finishes and under the floor. The project was completed in close collaboration with the hospital s executive administration, clinical staff, the medical equipment vendor, skilled equipment installers, a general construction contractor, specialized trade subcontractors, a structural engineer, and our MEP engineering consultants. Cold Stone Creamery Newport on the Levee For the original 2001 build-out, Kiessling Architecture adapted a standard CSC store concept to fit into an existing retail building shell. Then we designed the awnings, rectangular windows and entrance doors to meet the mall developer s requirements. The entrance door handles are shaped like ice cream cones to match the CSC logo. Green Diamond Gallery a private baseball collection and reception facility Montgomery, Ohio For this project, Kiessling Architecture Inc. (KAI) was part of an all-star team. Working with designer KD+P, Optimal Engineering, and project manager/exhibit designer Murphy-Catton, KAI was architect-of-record for the Green Diamond Gallery building permit drawings.
