2 What is a burial vault? A burial vault is a lined and sealed outer receptacle that houses the casket. It protects the casket from the weight of the earth and heavy maintenance equipment that will pass over the grave. It also helps resist water and preserves the beauty of the cemetery or memorial park by preventing the ground from settling. 3 If it s not lined and sealed it s not a burial vault An outer burial container, or gravebox, is an unlined concrete box with drainage holes to allow ground water to escape. Burial vaults are constructed of high-strength concrete and reinforced with a metal or plastic liner. They provide the most lasting protection. By definition, if an outer burial container is not lined and sealed, it s not a burial vault. 4 Resisting Loads Several types of loads weigh upon a burial vault. Understanding each load s impact reinforces the importance of a quality lined burial vault to protecting a casket and a loved one. Static Load A static load is the weight of the earth straight above a burial vault. Today s average grave supports 18 inches of earth, a static load of close to 4,000 lbs. Dynamic Load Varying in intensity, a dynamic load is transferred to a burial vault as large and heavy cemetery equipment passes over the grave (e.g., a 25,000-lb backhoe). Impact Load A dense force sent by a mechanical tamper or a dropped backhoe bucket, an impact load can travel through soil and damage the burial vault cover. 5 What will be at the graveside? A graveside service provides the graceful conclusion to a loved one s memorial. Some cemeteries practices may vary because of ethnic or religious customs, but most services will follow these steps: 1 Cemetery workers open the grave. 2 The burial vault is delivered and installed. 3 Family and friends gather at the gravesite for the interment. 4 The funeral professional observes final preparations for interment. 5 The burial vault is lowered into the grave. 6 The grave is filled, compacted and later seeded or sodded.
