1 HAZARD MAPPING AND VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT PRIORITIZATION WORKHSOP GRENADA Coyaba Beach Resort, Grand Anse 1.0 SESSION 1: Overview of Hazards 1.1 The meeting noted: i) The occurrence of fires resulting from the burning of building materials on construction sites; and the campaign by the Fire Services to discourage this act ii) That the Ministry of Works is currently discussing the inclusion in building specifications of appropriate disposal methods for disposing of construction waste materials and the possible institution of penalties for the inappropriate disposal of construction waste materials iii) The need to consider small events with great impacts (e.g. rockfall) when analyzing hazards in 2.0 SESSION 2: Review of Existing Hazard Mapping, Vulnerability Assessments and Digital Baseline Information 2.1 The meeting noted: i) That current contours for were at a 25ft interval and noted the need for mapping at smaller intervals. ii) That NAWASA was currently undertaking digital mapping of pipelines iii) The potential hazard of leaking pipes iv) The need for NAWASA to have access to a national GIS. v) That no national GIS agency existed in vi) That all government digital data was held by the Land Use Department and that the data was developed for the agriculture sector vii) That information sharing existed between the Land Use Department and the Physical Planning Department and also between Physical Planning and NAWASA. However the mechanism for information sharing was an informal one. viii) The existence of ICONOS imagery for the entire country 1

2 3.0 SESSION 3: Methodology for and Selection of Priority Hazards 3.1 Hazard Checklist for Participants were asked to identify under Task A (based on the list provided) the hazards which may occur in ; and to identify under Task B the hazards which pose a significant threat to the country. The top hazards identified were: Task A Task B 1. Coastal Erosion 1. Landslides 2. Floods 2. Coastal Erosion/ Winds/ Flooding 3. Landslides 3. Volcano 4. Volcano 4. Storm Surge 5. Storm Surge 3.2 Hazard Priority Matrix for Priority hazards for were also assessed utilizing the Relative Hazard Priority matrix. 4 5.2 The meeting noted: That vulnerability assessments for sea level rise were done by CPACC for: i) Point Saline to Fontenoy ii) Saubise/Marquis to Pearls iii) Carriacou 5.3 The meeting recommended: i) That a mechanism /criteria be developed to determine how far inland mapping would extend. ii) That the development of this mechanism and the delineation of the area to be mapped be included as one of the first activities which the Hazard Mapping and Vulnerability Assessment Committee would undertake. 4
