Projects in the UK, Germany and Sweden range from urban design masterplans to larger commercial, residential and mixed-use developments as well as schools and transport projects. Always enthusiastic about the schemes she is taking on, Cora enjoys resolving complex design briefs and steering sensitive applications through the planning process. After qualifying in Germany, she worked for Brisac Gonzalez Architecture on the Museum of World Culture in Gothenburg, Sweden. Returning to Germany she was involved in a series of successful competitions for JSWD Architekten including a winning entry for a masterplanning scheme in Munich for Siemens Hofmannstrasse, several mixed-use schemes including the 28m Constantin Höfe and two large city-centre regeneration transport hub projects for German Rail and Wuppertal Council. Leading multi-disciplinary teams has enabled her to develop high-quality design principles while delivering efficient, sustainable, future-proof solutions which are economically sound. Since joining Stride Treglown in 2006, Cora has been Design Architect and Project Associate for a number of residential schemes in Portishead for Crest Nicholson and large residential projects for Bovis Homes in Hatfield, Biddulph and Bishop s Stortford North that included masterplanning of 164, 198 and 271 units respectively. She also coordinated particularly the residential element for the outline planning permission for a mixed use development extending over land at White Rock, Paignton (39.1 hectares, 350 units). All these schemes created sustainable communities with high quality open spaces and a range of unit sizes. Cora was also involved in developing several Design Codes over the last few years for the 2,200 units development Charlton Hayes in Filton, the Newark Vision project and Bishop s Stortford North. Extensive community consultation has been carried out for all of these schemes. Cora s experience also includes designing Primary Schools in Winford and Long Ashton for North Somerset Council within the constraints of tight sites; both included the refurbishment of the existing school house and asked for a sympathetic response to the context. Cora has designed and overseen a number of sustainable office schemes for public and private clients including 6m exemplar Sigma-Aldrich s headquarters in Dorset, the refurbishment of Council Offices and a Business Hub in Torquay and a series of Concept Design studies for the 23m headquarters for Ecclesiastical Insurance in Gloucester. Cora enjoys working with stakeholders throughout the project to extract a detailed brief and inform the evolving design, and is dedicated to put forward design solutions that are sympathetic to the context and enhance the environment. Cora is currently responsible for the 8m office refurbishment for Eastleigh Borough Council to BREEAM Excellent standard which is part of the town centre regeneration. She worked closely with Council and external stakeholders including MENCAP throughout the course of the project to extract a detailed brief which informed the evolving design. She is now the key client contact and acts as their Technical Advisor during the construction period.
2 Eastleigh House, Eastleigh Refurbishment of BREEAM Excellent Eastleigh Borough Council offices Involvement from Stage A Completion 2014 (on site) Value 8m Client Eastleigh Borough Council Eastleigh Borough Council have decided to move their offices from the periphery into the heart of the town centre. This will make the Authority more visible, more accessible to members of the public and businesses, increase the footfall in the centre and help strengthen the Eastleigh Borough Council brand. It is hoped that the move will spark further regeneration projects in the town centre. The fully refurbished Eastleigh House will provide modern office standards and a highly energy efficient building. Approximately 350 council employees will be working flexibly in the building. The current undercroft parking and vehicular access route will be completely filled within the footprint of the building in order to create much needed additional floor space for the Customer Service Centre. A new building element, the glass box providing touch-down points, meeting rooms and break-out spaces, has been introduced at the corner of Romsey Road and Upper Market Street and will create a new landmark in the centre. The refurbished building will enrich the streetscene of Eastleigh and convey a modern image of the council. The proposed cladding will give the building a new face and provide the necessary improvement in thermal insulation.
3 Block K and Block M, Portishead Residential developments Involvement Stage A-D Completion 2009 Client Crest Nicholson Block K features six three-storey townhouses and four two-bedroom apartments. The townhouses continue the existing dockside development; the small apartment block adds a focal end point and forms a bold landmark with its higher balcony element. Each apartment has its own external space with excellent sea views. The affordable Block M apartment block, comprising of 22 twobedroom and four one-bedroom units, forms part of a wider master plan and enhances the urban space and the neighbouring townhouses. The scheme reacts with its elevations to the seaside environment; south and west sides afford impressive views of Portishead Marina.
4 Winford Church of England Primary School Refurbishment and extension of a Primary School in a village location Involvement Stages A-E Completion 2011 Client Willmott Dixon for North Somerset Council The project involved refurbishment and extension of the existing school from 120 student places to 150 with a BREEAM Very Good requirement. The design was developed in close cooperation with children, teachers, the Council s education specialists and governors to create a village community school that is in the spirit of the school s vision. The project posed interesting challenges such as the location of the school directly under the flight path of Bristol airport, a sloping landscape and a tightly constrained site. The site is located in the centre of the village and although not listed or located in a conservation area, the design reflects the materiality and respects the village context. The existing and new-build is now connected with a flowing highly flexible space over two floors which is bordered by the hall, new classrooms and group rooms. This naturally ventilated stimulating environment is much loved by pupils and teachers alike. A teaching balcony and terrace extend the classrooms out into the landscape.
5 Birdwell Primary School, Long Ashton Refurbishment and extension of a Primary School Involvement Stages A-D Completion 2011 Client Willmott Dixon for North Somerset Council Birdwell Primary School formed part of North Somerset s Primary Capital programme which required the school to expand from 210 pupil places to 315. The aim of the design was therefore to retain the existing school as far as possible whilst remodelling and refurbishing the building to meet the needs anticipated of 21st Century Learning. The introduction of a new classroom wing as well as an internal landscaped courtyard not only enabled a new configuration of the existing school and play spaces but also provides a variety of active, reflective and relaxing spaces. The proposal was developed over a series of consultations with the school s teachers, educational specialists, local community, neighbours and children. The design included a series of new administrative and entrance spaces, a new classroom wing and a heart space to adjoin the existing school hall with the new twostorey extension. This now well lovel heart space was developed to encourage a sense of community for the school and create a multi-use space for group work, a library, and an extension to the school hall capacity when necessary.
6 Salisbury Village Hatfield Residential masterplan and reserved matters application for 164 units Involvement from Stage A-D Completion 2011 Client Bovis Homes The 2.81 ha brownfield site, which originally gained planning permission in October 2009, constitutes the final phase of the Salisbury Village Residential Development in Hatfield. The scheme comprises 115 residential units and 49 affordable housing units as well as landscaped amenity spaces for the residents and 297 parking spaces. This area of new development on a former airfield is located in close proximity to the De Havilland Campus of the University of Hertfordshire and the very large Grade II listed Comet Hangar. The elevations are based on the concept of integrating and reinterpretating architectural elements of a closer (Hatfield, New Town development) and a wider context (contemporary London), with the aim to create a modern appearance through a clean aesthetic and high quality materials. The buildings provide an elevational variety that responds to the different character areas set out in the development. With London s Kings Cross Station just 18 miles away, the properties are aimed at city professionals as well as investors looking for property so close to the University.
7 Constantin Höfe, Cologne Mixed-used city centre development Involvement from Stage A-D For JSWD architekten Completion 2006 Value 28.0m Client Hochtief The project is situated in the district of Cologne-Deutz opposite the city centre and close to Cologne-Deutz station. Creating a new spatial boundary on the busy Opladener Strasse, this mixed-use development is shaped as a meander with three adjacent courtyards, two of which are located on the first floor; the third courtyard, Constantin Hof, is publicly accessible and situated on the ground floor. These three courtyards form the interface between the residential and the office part of the building as well as establishing a respectful relationship to the surrounding urban space. The Constantin Hof is equally inviting to employees, residents and passers-by. The public passage from the tram station opens out into this public courtyard used by the adjacent restaurants or as a place to simply rest or to have lunch. The development provides 16,000m² of office space in total; the eastern side houses the headquarters of a global insurance company. Adjacent to the western courtyard, 23 apartments have been created to offer central living close to public transport in a relaxed environment.
8 Munich Hofmannstrasse, Isar Süd Masterplanning Competition 1st Prize Involvement from Stage A-D For JSWD architekten Gross area proposed approximately 750,000m² Client Siemens Located in the south of Munich is the largest production site of Siemens Inc., formerly employing over 14,000 people. Siemens had decided to convert the site into a modern urban neighbourhood featuring office space, mixed-use residential developments, green areas and infrastructure services to create a new urban quarter in the south of Munich where occupants can live and work in close proximity. The scheme proposes a central 6 ha parkland at the heart of the new development, serving as a connection between the different uses of the site as well as the main recreation area. Around the park, small neighbourhoods with their own identity are proposed around town squares. Family-friendly housing creates the urban transition to the existing residential areas in the neighbourhood. Two other high-rise buildings will be added to the existing Siemens headquarters creating an exciting ensemble acting as a new landmark.
