SEQUIS: INTER-SITE CONNECTIVITY 1. Modern Jakarta : Car City and Capsules Sites 2. Public Transportation and Infrastructure 3. Sequis Tower An Alternative Urbanism 4. Inter-Site Connectivity: Challenges and Benefits 5. Inter-Site Connectivity Design
Jakarta : The capital city and most populous city in Indonesia Land area of approximately 662 km 2 in comparison to Java island of 127,569 km 2
Jakarta : The center of economics, culture and politics Population of approximately 10 million (reaching 14 million during the day) Population density of 15,174 people/km 2 (the ninth largest urban population density in the world) Nominal GDP of USD billion in 2016 or equivalent to 17.5% of the nominal GDP of Indonesia
Jakarta : The center of economics, culture and politics GREEN AREA RESIDENTIAL AREA COMMERCIAL AREA GOVERNMENT INDUSTRIAL AREA WATER
Modern Jakarta : Car City and Capsules Sites 1980s How Jakarta has transformed into a modern city 1990s Now
Modern Jakarta : Car City and Capsules Sites Car City at its worst
Modern Jakarta : Car City and Capsules Sites The planning of building sites as insulated capsules with boundary walls for security. Pedestrian movement impeded as a result.
Modern Jakarta : Car City and Capsules Sites Inter-site connectivity and accessibility from building to building are missing in most Jakarta s building design. Pedestrians access are often overlooked, instead, focusing on drop off for people arriving in cars.
Modern Jakarta : Car City and Capsules Sites As a result, existing pedestrian infrastructure is re-appropriated for other uses and neglected
Modern Jakarta : Car City and Capsules Sites Lack of connectivity between different modes of public transportation No connectivity to busway stations: commuters have to get out of the station and use narrow sidewalk. Grade crossing is not safe and not pedestrian friendly. No street marking or crossing signals. 400m PEDESTRIAN COVERED PEDESTRIAN GRADE CROSSING BRIDGE CROSSING UNDERPASS CROSSING TRAIN STATION BUSWAY STATION
Modern Jakarta : Car City and Capsules Sites Pedestrian bridge or underpass crossing are placed at a random distance, and often not at the ideal location, many people need to walk quite far just to get across. 700m 550m 350m 400m 250m 650m BRIDGE CROSSING UNDERPASS CROSSING BUSWAY STATION
Modern Jakarta : Car City and Capsules Sites As a result: There isn t enough good inter-site connectivity in Jakarta between building to building and building to public transportation. Instead of walking, residents of Jakarta use cars, buses, taxis and motorcycles to travel distances as short as 200 m
SEQUIS: INTER-SITE CONNECTIVITY 1. Modern Jakarta : Car City and Capsules Sites 2. Public Transportation and Infrastructure 3. Sequis Tower An Alternative Urbanism 4. Inter-Site Connectivity: Challenges and Benefits 5. Inter-Site Connectivity Design
Jakarta : Public Transportation and Infrastructure Jakarta s Infrastructure, especially its transportation has always been the city s biggest problem (for the last two decades) Some of the many contributing factors: poor public transportation, lack of control in car and motorcycle ownership, lack of commitment from regulator (state and central government), and lack of visionary approach in urban planning
Jakarta : Public Transportation and Infrastructure Transportation condition in Jakarta: (study conducted by University of Indonesia in 2015) - Number of motorized vehicles approximately 5.5 million with only 2% public transport serving 56% of the trips - Average annual growth of motorized vehicles close to 10% for the last 5 years - Average annual growth of road length only 0.01% - Only 7% of the capital s 7,650 km of road have sidewalks - Total demand for public transport has reached 17.1 million trips/day - The total monetary lost due to traffic congestion estimated at almost USD 1 billion/year (lost of opportunity, fuel cost, health cost)
Jakarta : Public Transportation and Infrastructure Strategy and initiatives to improve Jakarta transportation: (by state and central government) 1. Public transport development a. Mass Rapid Transit / MRT b. Light Rail Transit / LRT c. Busway d. Waterways
Jakarta : Public Transportation and Infrastructure Strategy and initiatives to improve Jakarta transportation: (by state and central government) 2. Regulation / Policy a. Traffic restricted zone: Odd and even or 3 in 1 b. Electronic Road Pricing / ERP c. Parking restriction d. Parking pricing e. Promote TOD
Jakarta : Public Transportation and Infrastructure Strategy and initiatives to improve Jakarta transportation: (by state and central government) 3. Road network and facility improvement a. Road network: underpass, flyover, toll road b. Park and ride system c. Pedestrian walkway and connectivity d. Area traffic control system
Jakarta : Public Transportation and Infrastructure In a recent study by researchers at Stanford University, Indonesia, the world s 4th-mostpopulous nation, came in last among 46 countries and territories for the number of walking steps its citizens take, averaging only 3,513 a day 1 Hong Kong 6,880 steps / day 2 China 6,189 steps / day 4 Japan 6,010 steps / day 46 Indonesia 3,513 steps / day
Jakarta : Public Transportation and Infrastructure Recovering the pedestrian city: the provision of good inter-site connectivity and pedestrian walkway will encourage people to walk
SEQUIS: INTER-SITE CONNECTIVITY 1. Modern Jakarta : Car City and Capsules Sites 2. Public Transportation and Infrastructure 3. Sequis Tower An Alternative Urbanism 4. Inter-Site Connectivity: Challenges and Benefits 5.
