This true and responsive expertise ensures superior project completion and valuable, enduring relationships that benefit our clients now and into the future. ISG provides high level architecture, engineering, environmental and planning services for a wide range of markets. Our commitment to satisfy each project s unique demands is relentless and unwavering from start to finish. It s true expertise and ingenuity put to work for your success.
Enriching everyday experiences. A wide variety of people from citizens to visitors alike embody the spirit of each community and make it unique. At ISG, we value and strive to wholly understand our clients aspirations and enrich each experience with inspiration. Nowhere is this goal more intricately important than when working with our civic and cultural clients. Since public and group stakeholder involvement is the cornerstone of these projects, it s our commitment to listen and bring a multitude of ideas together to create the very best outcome. We get to know the people and their dreams for their community and organizations. Once we identify those dreams, we take the time to balance them with the needs, budgets and scores of other factors impacting the success of a project. The outcome is a building or space that is functional, dynamic, aesthetically pleasing and a reflection of the people who spend time there a place of distinction, unique to them. Riverfront Park Mankato, MN On the banks of the Minnesota River, this exciting and unique space is the result of a cooperative planning process with the community and the City of Mankato. This former industrial site was converted into a much-needed gathering space for cultural and recreational activities. The park is helping to rejuvenate the Old Town District and showcases the city s commitment to sound urban planning. The park provides an outstanding venue for festivals and concerts, improves access to the popular Sakatah Bike Trail, preserves open space and allows visitors to reconnect to the Minnesota River with access for kayaking and fishing.
ISG s expertise in civic and cultural planning, design and engineering is highlighted by a variety of projects and has a deep respect for the historical significance that can often be inherent in a civic project. Our design professionals are adept at combining that historical respect with their knowledge of sustainability trends to add pertinence to both new and reuse projects. CIVIC AND CULTURAL WORK Religious Buildings Community Centers Theatres Parks and Trails Museums Art Galleries Recreational Centers and Facilities Libraries Amphitheaters Church of St. Andrew Elysian, MN With their existing one-room church cramped and in need of substantial repair, this parish turned to ISG to develop a comprehensive master plan for their growing congregation. A prioritized, phased approach was incorporated to be compatible with fundraising plans. The design team worked with the congregation to create the image of a rural, small town church. The expansion plan included a new 326-seat sanctuary, administrative offices, a remodeled multi-purpose room, new ADA accessible restrooms, a conference room and storage. The next phase included an educational classroom wing and alternative locations for additional parking. Wells Depot Museum Wells, MN The restoration of this small town depot designated on the Register of National Historic Places was needed to preserve the building as a city landmark and serve as a museum for the city s historical society collections. The project included a complete roof restoration, back to the original cedar shakes and cedar rain gutters. Exterior paint was removed to expose the original brick. Other additions and renovations such as ADA entrance accessibility and restrooms, preservation of the existing windows with new storm windows and new HVAC and plumbing systems all brought the building up to modern standards while maintaining the historic aesthetics. It was awarded the 2010 Minnesota Preservation Award for Adaptive Reuse.
Clarion Aquatic Center Clarion, IA This unique reconstruction of the City of Clarion s 1938 swimming pool saved over $1 million and satisfied the city s needs. The pool s shallow end was demolished and replaced with a zero depth entry and plunge area for two water slides. ISG s design provided a peninsula to separate the shallow area from the rest of the pool, where the 12 foot depth deep-end diving boards were moved and two fast-drop slides were added. The existing 1938 bathhouse was replaced and now includes handicap accessibility and many modern amenities. The revisions added an additional 20 years to the life of the dated facility and attendance has soared as the community members enjoy their new aquatic center. Blue Earth Nicollet County Humane Society Riverside Regional Pet Shelter Mankato, MN This 6,500 square foot energy efficient shelter is a safe and welcoming home for up to 80 animals. The building and site incorporated a variety of sustainable initiatives including PV solar panels, regional material use, reduced water use on both the interior and landscape, pervious paver parking area, rain gardens and special parking for fuel efficient vehicles or carpools. The facility utilizes the latest technology and was designed in an environmentally friendly manner that minimizes operating expenses and maintenance costs. The project was awarded LEED Silver by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). East Leach Park Skateboard Park Spencer, IA This award-winning project had ISG working with the Spencer Park Board from the beginning to gather input from the community and then develop a conceptual plan and preliminary budget. The project included skateboard elements like round bowls, square bowls, half pipes, fun boxes and ramps. These irregular shapes and rounded features were constructed using shotcrete/gunite techniques. A second phase of the park s development included construction of a parking lot, reconstruction of a sand volleyball area and connecting trails and sidewalks. The American Council of Engineering Companies of Iowa presented an Honor Award for the project at its annual Engineering Excellence Awards.
Mankato Family YMCA Mankato, MN ISG designed a pair of renovation projects for the Mankato Family YMCA that were realized in 2001 and in The former was a $4.8 million, 30,000 square foot project that transformed the aging YMCA into a state-ofthe-art facility. The centerpieces of the project are the Taylor Family Aquatic Center and a large life/fitness center. The 2012 renovation included a reconfiguration of the locker room facilities and main lobby. The size of the new family locker area more than doubled and was relocated closer to both the main entry and the aquatic center. Storm Lake Trail Storm Lake, IA The Storm Lake Trail network provides a pleasant and safe trail system for a variety of outdoor enthusiasts. The trail expansions included removal of sidewalk and widening the trail to better accommodate traffic in both directions. The eastern segment now extends from the public access boat ramp and swimming beach to the south city limit. The western segment includes lighting and a loop was constructed to connect the existing trail through Frank Starr Park to a recycled pedestrian bridge over the inlet to Storm Lake.
Elmore Public Library Elmore, MN The conversion and renovation of an existing building in downtown Elmore into a new library required a complete interior redesign, and special exterior upgrades. ISG designed a renewed interior layout featuring an expanded circulation area, more seating options, new restrooms and a community meeting room. The community meeting room, kitchen and restrooms are situated so they can be accessed for events even when the library is closed. The library renovation was funded in part through the USDA Rural Development Initiative and Recovery Act program, the City of Elmore and from generous local donors. St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Mankato, MN Changing needs identified for this long-standing parish included increased entry fellowship space and a sanctuary redesign. The sanctuary now features a raised platform to bring special focus to the liturgical portion of the ministry. Reconfigured limestone stairs radiate from the altar and are set back from a granite inlayed star. The front entry baptistery was relocated to allow for an expanded narthex with increased natural daylight and a more welcoming entry for parishioners. The expanded entry required the careful relocation of the church s stained glass window The Eye of God. It is now prominently placed between two main front doors and is the central focus in the narthex of the building.
Emy Frentz Arts Guild Mankato, MN ISG assisted in the renovation and conversion of a former church in downtown Mankato into the Emy Frentz Arts Guild. The historic building includes offices for a local arts organization, artist studio spaces, a gallery, conference room and common areas. Repairs to the facility included roofing, stone masonry wall tuck-pointing and window restoration. Salvaged and re-milled timbers were used to frame the space between the artists studios down the center of the old church sanctuary. An existing circular window above the main entrance was preserved and became the inspiration for the art organization s logo. Veteran s Memorial Place Mankato, MN Located at the foot of the Veterans Memorial Bridge that spans over the Minnesota River in downtown Mankato, the Veteran s Memorial Place is a site of remembrance dedicated to all veterans who have served our country. The five points of the star represent the five service branches of the United States Military. Each service branch is also represented by a stone plaque emblazoned with its official seal. Brick pavers pay tribute to service members with their name, rank and dates of service. Veteran s Memorial Place is part of the trail of heroes, which includes 13 other memorial sites to commemorate the sacrifices of veterans from the 1800 s to present day.
Hormel Foods Spam Museum Austin, MN A complete renovation turned an abandoned big-box store into the home of the SPAM Museum and Hormel Foods office building. The 27,000 square foot museum is an international tourist destination. Its two-story red brick façade is reminiscent of a grand historic farmer s market building and sports a colorful blue metal roof and blue and yellow awnings to represent the iconic colors of the SPAM brand. The project received design acclaim and recognition by Architecture Minnesota and Commercial Investment Real Estate magazines and was highlighted in the book Big Box Reuse, which featured of the most successful adaptive reuse projects throughout the country. St. Peter Community Center St. Peter, MN Following the tornadoes of 1998 that destroyed many of St. Peter s community buildings, ISG set out to recreate a central community center that would serve as a gathering place for all residents. A senior center, day-care center, Early Childhood Education Services, a gymnasium/field house and office space are all located in one efficient location. Tiered plazas were designed to provide spaces intimate enough for a small group at the coffee shop or for the community to come together for public gatherings. ISG architects successfully provided an endearing link between the past and the future by including many visual elements reminiscent of its predecessor building.
Paradise Center for the Arts Faribault, MN The Paradise Center for the Arts is the result of a combined effort from three different arts groups to restore an abandoned theater and preserve an important historic structure in the community. The design ISG prepared needed to accommodate multiple users/ user-groups including performing arts space, visual arts studio and gallery space, as well as supporting areas such as classrooms, rehearsal rooms, storage and offices. The design restored the main historic entrance façade to its original 1929 appearance, made the building accessible, allowed for the addition of a balcony, increased lobby space and added various support spaces. The Paradise Center for the Arts won the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota for outstanding preservation projects in Trinity Lutheran Church Owatonna, MN A vibrant and growing ministry in a historic building with a prominent role in the neighborhood desired an expansion at their existing location. ISG provided planning services including coordination of user group meetings to determine needs, assistance with congregational materials for fundraising and close contact with the building committee and congregation to make this project a success. An 8,500 square foot multi-purpose room, accessibility updates, sustainability components and completely new and redesigned mechanical systems ensured the congregation will remain a strong visual, physical and spiritual presence in the community for decades to come.
