3 The 215 acres that comprises Bella Fontaine Park is located between Halls Ferry Road and Bellefontaine Road in north St. Louis County adjacent to the Maline Creek. The park features are located in two main areas separated by a five lane busy road Lewis & Clark Blvd. West of Lewis & Clark the park features include trails, picnic area, playground, half basketball court, restroom, pavilion and ball field. East of Lewis & Clark the park includes trails, picnic areas, basketball courts, a lighted softball complex, exercise stations, tennis courts, fishing lake, playgrounds, restroom and pavilions. The park includes over two miles of trails that are part of the Maline Greenway. A GRG project to replace three existing pedestrian bridges along the trails, make stream bank improvements, and upgrades to the trails is scheduled to begin construction in Bella Fontaine Park was originally dedicated in 1960 with only about twelve acres of land. Over 160 acres was acquired by the County in the early 1970s which led to the development of the popular Fountain Lake Softball Complex in the mid 1980s. Bella Fontaine County Park Entry Sign. Fountain Lakes concession area lacks shade. Site Observation Summary: Trails in this park are heavily used. Some of the trails are scheduled to be upgraded by GRG as part of the bridge replacement project. Upgrades will include resurfacing, widening and accessibility improvements. Concrete sidewalk leading to basketball court is not ADA accessible. Pot holes and drainage issues exist in Landwehr Lane at south entrance to the tennis-basketball courts parking lot. Stone BBQ grill and grotto near the Kingsbury shelter has cracks and needs tuckpointing. Bella Fontaine West is connected to the main park by a trail that crosses Lewis & Clark Road. This crossing is not safe due to the lack of a crosswalk, sign or light. About 4 acres of Bella Fontaine West was converted to prairie in an area that used to be ball fields. Western most parking lot at Bella Fontaine West has more pavement than needed and drainage issues exist on the western edge. Bella Fontaine West horseshoe pit is new but has been damaged.
