1 LIST OF COSTED PRIORITY PROPOSALS January 2001
2 List of Costed Priority Proposals High Priority The following proposals have been broadly separated into three sections: Black Fen; Garden and Landscape Buildings; The Park, Southern Parkland and remaining areas. This list covers the priority works in these three areas which should be considered in the next two to three years. None of the areas should necessarily take priority over the other. All three are of equal importance in terms of the overall character that makes up this remarkable historic landscape. These costs are estimates and do not include VAT. They are based upon experience with recent repair and landscaping works, and should be treated as broad brush figures for the purpose of general guidance. Black Fen Prepare separate costed management plan using information gathered in this report. Restore priority rides as set out in the report and replant trees using species related to historical research where practical. 15,000-20,000 over three years Apply to the Woodland Grant Scheme for the specific Woodland Improvement Grant within the next two years. Landscape Buildings and the Garden Buildings (priority works over the next two/three years) (NB: Costings for works to buildings in the medium (3-5 years) and long term (five to ten years or longer) are listed in the Garden Buildings Condition Survey Chapel 40,000 Gothic Summer House 27,500 Rotunda 65,000 Ha Ha South Section 30,000 Parterre 4,000 Open Temple 5,000 The Gothic Temple 2,500 The Dolphin Fountain 1,500 Monument to Jet 400 Total 176,050 Professional Fees: An additional 12.5% should be added to these figures to cover architects fees. (Application to English Heritage grant aid for these works)
3 Hydrological Survey to assess water supply to garden 10,000 (Application to English Heritage for this survey) Following results of this survey, priority should be given to halt leakage and improve water supply to the T-Pond N/A Restoration of water supply to other areas in the garden could then follow but is not an immediate priority Landscape Works within the Garden (Application to English Heritage for the following priority landscape works within the garden) Thin avenue trees planted post 1962, particularly the trees that make up avenues or vistas. They should be thinned and formative pruned. Woodland behind avenues should also be thinned. Estimate for these works 16,400 The priority areas are: Four Faces to White Gates Four Faces via T-Pond to Lead Lads Four Faces to Whittle Carr Open Temple to Kitchen Garden Hedge. Incorporate the area referred to in this report as Cascade Valley back into the garden. New fencing or railing required to act as Garden boundary. Remove existing fence boundary. Open up historic walks in this area. 7,000 (NB:Consider reinstating the haha around this area at the same time. While this is not an immediate priority, it would make sense to undertake this work at the same time as incorporating this area back into the garden. It would complete the restoration of this area) Reopen Approach from North Lodge for Visiting Public (Application for grant aid to English Heritage) This should be viewed as a priority, and when completed would enhance the sense of arrival. In order to achieve this, the following needs to be considered Resurface approach road from North Lodge to the East Drive 50,000
4 Engineer s Condition Survey of Gootling Brig or Lendrick Hills Bridge 2,000 Restore/Strengthen Bridge as necessary N/A The Park and Southern Parkland (The following could be funded via the Countryside Stewardship Scheme) Remove young trees and replant the Broadwalk avenue as stated in the Report 2,000 Begin programme of replanting of East Drive 1,500 Thin Trees and Scrub in Cascades Field to reveal the South Terrace Wall; 1,500 Thatched House Field: Reversion to Grassland, preferably permanent pasture (A fixed fee per ha would be given under Stewardship Scheme depending upon existing yields) Restore historic park boundary in Thatched House Field (fixed fee per metre) Thin trees surrounding the site of Thatched House leaving any Veteran trees. 2,500 Most appropriate funding from Countryside Stewardship Scheme. Applications can only be made annually at the end of May. Decisions on grant aid are notified the following September.
