6 ABBEY Proposals area 6 Seating areas near Abbey Road The Abbey Road seating areas are considered in three sections. To the north (area A) at the western end of the B blocks of Rowley Way, the central section (area B) with access to Langtry Walk and the Hive and the southern section at the western end of Ainsworth Way (area C). This area does not include the Hive building itself or its immediate environs. A The proposals for this area are to:. 8 Proposals area 6 Seating areas near Abbey Road exclusions Key The plan opposite illustrates the exclusions from this planning application. Application boundary The Hive building and environs do not form part of this application. The access road from Abbey Road to the Hive threshold is included and the proposals include making this route DDA compliant by subtly relevelling between the Abbey Road and Hive thresholds. The area hatched opposite includes the roof terraces and semipublic outdoor spaces adjacent to the Hive where proposals will be intrinsically linked to the end use of the Hive building itself. The Hive and environs excluded from this application Football pitch excluded from this application WLEY W The football pitch and fence does not form part of this application. The Parks for People funding programme does not contribute towards sports facilities and is therefore excluded from this application. 9 Proposals area 7 Football pitch environs This area excludes the football pitch itself which is not part of this application or the Heritage Lottery submission. The proposals for this area are to:. Reintroduce varied planting types especially flowering tree species with a management regime that can create a diversity of habitats including at ground level to include seasonal planting such as bulbs. Create a more welcoming and clear entry experience by managing plant heights to allow sight lines to spaces beyond.. Restore and repair surfaces and walls. 11 7 Proposals area 9 Former playground Playground Janet Jack s original design for Playground The original provision was a topographical landscape created with timber sleepers and slides. The current provision All equipment and features have been removed from playground. The area has been tarmaced. This area is currently a dead end and offers little positive contribution to the parks character in its present configuration and state of decline. A Janet Jack By removing the fence allowing access to the Hive and creating a new access route this area will become part of the park circulation route. The proposals for this area are to: Reinstate connection to the Hive with new accessible path. Create informal terrace seating for viewing football pitch.. Reinstate the feature timber fence to the north and remove the high fence to the east to enable views beyond to the Bowl. Repair edges and timber post and rails and fences. Remove asphalt and introduce varied planting types especially flowering species with a management regime that can create a diversity of habitats including flowering trees and ground cover planting. 12 8 Proposals area 0 Playground Playground. Repair and restore timber seating backs and precast concrete seat walls. Repair edges and timber post and rails and fences/ balustrades to match the original design.. New planting referencing existing planting palette and including new opportunities for additional biodiversity. Create an informal sports, exercise play opportunities with new surfaces as detailed below: The proposal is to create a games area, which is a more informal alternative to the MUGA: No booking is required and many different games can be played. a. We are proposing to replace the existing patchwork surface with a single surface polymeric multisport surface. Line markings will be applied to indicate volleyball and badminton courts, football and tennis can also be played at a reduced size Janet Jack b. Two painted metal posts allow the users to turn up with a string (or the well equipped with a proper net), which can be put up and the game can begin. c. A highpoint is created, which can serve as umpire s chair, but also as outlook towards playground and across the labyrinthine paths between the walls. The highpoint will have the same colour and appearance to the proposals for Playground to create a formal continuity. c In contrast to playground however, playground is otherwise urban and a flexible space. a Target age group Playground is targeted towards all age groups (including adults). Key activities Games such as volleyball, badminton, football, tennis (and any other game people choose to play). One could take part in cycling or skating games on the lines for example or bring in markers to create a high speed skating slalom on the smooth and even surface. Other informal sports can also be facilitated in play area through the activity programme for the park. Proposed axonometric 8

The plain metal geodesic dome was placed in a circular area of sand. The painted metal structure on concrete pavers. A long and slim sandpit was located at the northern border of the site.
