4 Hillhouse Hillhouse is an unlisted detached family house constructed of stone elevations under a slate roof with brick chimneys. There is a stone and corrugated cement roofed barn lying on the north east elevation. On the south east side there is a timber and glazed garden room/orangery with sliding doors accessing the garden. 5 Situation Hillhouse is situated about 1½ miles from the popular town of Bruton which has a variety of shops, number of restaurants including At The Chapel and newly opened Hauser & Wirth Gallery with its adjacent restaurant. The town is also renowned for its excellent schooling both in the private and state sectors. Schools: Kings School Bruton, Bruton School for Girls and Sexeys School (state boarding). Other schools in the area include Hazlegrove at Sparkford, Millfield at Street, Sherborne Schools and Wells Cathedral School. Entertainment: Yeovil, Sherborne, Bath and Bristol. 6 Gardens and grounds The property is approached through a timber 5 bar gate onto a gravelled drive lying on the north sweeping around to gravelled parking and turning with space for a number of cars this area is screened by a high hedge. There is an archway in a high stone wall with a gravelled path leading to the front door which has an oak framed and slate porch with wisteria. This woodland area of garden is fully walled and enclosed with box hedging and mixed shrubs and plants including brunnera and bamboo. The main areas of formal garden lie south west and south east of the house benefitting from the southerly view. Running alongside the garden room there is a gravel garden with Mediterranean plantings. This leads around to a stone paved terrace on the southern end of the house which has access to the kitchen through French windows. This terrace has a box hedge surround opening onto a wide grass ride running parallel with the southern garden boundary. The main areas of formal garden lie on the south side with a further terrace bisected by gravelled paths to the door leading into the hallway with a magnolia and two prominent clipped bay bushes. This enclosed garden is laid to lawn with a long rectangular pond in the centre which has a lead edge and stone surround and is stocked with mixed aqua flora. There is a herbaceous border on one side of the lawn with a stone wall behind and a further stocked border on the other, where a gravelled path leads from the main house to the guest annexe. At the end of the lawn there are stone steps down to the southern area of garden, the dell, a grassy area bordered by ash and birch trees and partly enclosed by former quarry walls There are wonderful views over rolling Somerset countryside to Alfred s Tower and the Stourhead Estate woodland on the skyline in one direction and the Bruton Dovecote visible in the other. The land lies east of the garden and there is a small area of copse with a timber wicket gate from the parking area to a small orchard stocked with mixed apple and plum trees and leading out on to the paddock beyond. The land is laid to permanent pasture, slightly sloping with some mixed trees in two areas and securely enclosed by barbed wire and timber post and rail fencing.
