Several evaluation methods and tools might be suitable for assessing the fire behavior of passenger road vehicle components, when associated with any of the fire scenarios discussed in this guide. FMVSS 302 and other similar tests using different designations are used as the regulatory standard for the evaluation of passenger road vehicle components in the United States and some other countries. Table 10.1 identifies several, but not all, potential fire tests for consideration in assessing the fire performance of various components that could be involved in passenger road vehicle fires. NFPA 271 has been withdrawn The proposed addition of ASTM E2574/E2574M (Standard Test Method for Fire Testing of School Bus Seat Assemblies; 2012a) brings in a new test that is useful for assessing flame spread (and optionally heat and smoke release) when testing a full set of school bus seat assemblies. The standard needs to be added also to Chapter 2 on referenced ASTM standards. ASTM E2574 is an advanced version of the old paper bag test often used by local education authorities to assess whether school bus seat assemblies perform adequately in cases of fire. The regulatory tool for the application is simply FMVSS 302.
