I hope all of you have been enjoying working in your yard. The weeds have been plentiful along with the early blooming flowers. I have really enjoyed cutting the daffodils and having them on my kitchen table since the middle of February. Can you believe I just said that? Nature is waking up folks. RCGC has two big events occurring in the near future. They are the Fashion with Flowers , at the First Baptist Church, at North Boulevard and Monument Avenues. If you have not gotten your ticket contact Debbie Peaks, our treasurer. The tickets are $30.00 each. We are excited to have David Pippin and Bridgette Sweptson doing our program. They are so talented and it will be a treat to see them working together. Our next big event is the annual luncheon, in May, at the Meadowbrook Country Club. There will be more information to follow on this event. Your president hopes to have the official address for the RCGC at the April meeting. 2 NOTICE TO MEMBERSHIP There was some confusion at our last meeting (03/03/2017) regarding recognition by the Chair of those wishing to speak. Our organization s Bylaws clearly state: Richmond Council of Garden Clubs, Inc. Bylaws (May 11, 2012) Article XII-Parliamentary Authority The rules contained in the current edition of Robert s Rules of Order Newly Revised shall govern this organization in all cases to which they are applicable and in which they are not inconsistent with these Bylaws and any Special Rules of Order this organization may adopt. Example: When the discussion of a topic is in process, a member who would like to speak must first be recognized by the Chair. Please do not interrupt the Chair (President of RCGC), a discussion, or someone who has been recognized by the Chair and is speaking. Anytime you would like to speak, please raise your hand and wait for the Chair to acknowledge you. On any given topic, there is ample time for all to have an opportunity to voice their opinion, concerns, etc. Adherence to these guidelines will not only make our meetings smoother and less confusing, but will shorten the length of time it takes to complete the business of RCGC. ************ Richmond Council of Garden Clubs, Inc. Ginter Park Woman s Club 3016 Seminary Avenue February 3, 2017 The February meeting for the Richmond Council of Garden Clubs was called to order at 10:30 A.M. by the President, Barbara Hollister. Gladys Bowles, gave the invocation, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Bonnie Parker gave the credentials report: 29 clubs; 110 members; no guests. We have a quorum. Hostess chairman, Karen Patterson, thanked Woodland Pond for the refreshments for the day. Officer s reports: President Barbara Hollister Peggy Singlemann from Maymont contacted me, to invite the Richmond Council of Garden Clubs to the Home Grown TV show on Channel 23 for June She wants to feature our Conservation project that received an award at our May Luncheon. After further conversation I realized she was talking about our J Malcolm Pace Award. The 1 st place winner was the Hilliard Park Garden club. Cheryl Smith, president, said she and her club would be delighted to spruce up the garden at the Ronald McDonald House. I was also asked for a horticulture judge. I am pleased to report Lu Cavallaro has agreed to represent the Richmond Council of Garden Clubs. The Finance Committee plans to meet and would like for you to be thinking about your needs, especially if you are an officer or chairman of a committee. 1 st Vice President Pat Merson 2

3 Fashion and Flowers XIX, which will be held on March 31, 2017 at First Baptist Church on Monument Avenue in Richmond. David Pippin will create floral designs using sculptures by Bridgette Sweptson. Fashions will be provided by Dillards and will be modeled by garden club members. Church ladies will be making the lunch. All clubs are requested to provide one table arrangement and at least one item for the Silent Auction. The annual Meeting will be at the Meadowbrook Country Club on May 5 th. Program: Francis Thrash Creative Flower Designs. More information to follow in the newsletter. 2 nd Vice President Judy Futch announced speakers for the rest of the year: Mike Lockatell Breeding Irises and the program on March 3 rd will be presented by Shirley Woodle, Helen Bunch and Alice Litchfield Creative Ichyro Ikebana Designs. Recording Secretary Johanna Gilbert The minutes of our previous meeting have been published in the Newsletter have been approved and will be filed. Judy Hodges and Susan Humble have been asked to approve the minutes from today s meeting. Treasurer Debbie Peaks Balance brought forward as of December 1, 2016 was $12, Balance on hand December 30, 2016 is $14, Total CD s $ Corresponding Secretary/Newsletter Editor Linda Hardwick Reminder to all club presidents to share the RCGC Newsletter with the Club members via . Historian Bonnie Parker Announced we received old RCGC scrapbooks from Mrs. William McIntosh s daughter. Standing Committee Reports: Conservation Suzanne Spooner-Munch placed flyers on the seats. Habitat for Humanity Jean Fender- Informed the members of a new landscaping project at a home in Mechanicsville. Hospitality Karen Patterson announced Roslyn Hills will be the hostess in March. Meals on Wheels Lu Cavallaro announced clubs receiving checks for floral arrangements for Meals on Wheels. The clubs are: Canterbury $35, Pamumkey River $35, Greenfield $26, Northam $61, Bon Air $52, Woodland Pond $65. Tab Top Barbara Covington Keep bringing tab tops. House Tour Jane VanDenburgh, Debbie Peaks, and Judy Hodges were thanked for a job well done. RCGC netted $3,015 for this event. Judy Hodges made a motion to have the RCGC House Tour in October of Lu Cavallaro 2 nd the motion. Passed by a majority. Old Business: None. New Business: Susan Humble Records Retention Chairman. Susan announced that this morning the Executive Board has approved a new Standing Rule: I. Administration H. All documentation and files of RCGC should be maintained according to the RCGC Document Retention Schedule adopted by the Executive Committee. The Schedule will be published in the Yearbook. Announcements: RCGC now has a wholesale account at Flormax on the Boulevard. You may pay by cash, check or credit card. DO NOT CHARGE ON THE ACCOUNT WITH THE RICHMOND COUNCIL OF GARDEN CLUBS, INC. The highlight of the back garden is the original reflecting pool a signature component of the designer Charles Gillette ( ), a prominent landscape architect. He is well known for gardens at the Virginia House, the University of Richmond, Agecroft Hall, and the Governor s 5

6 Mansion in Richmond. Thanks to these garden clubs for their contributions. Thomas Jefferson Garden Club Lu Cavallaro, Chairman ************* The Thomas Jefferson Garden Club held their Meals on Wheels workshop on February 14 th, The group made 36 floral designs to be delivered to Meals on Wheels. Carol Morse, Committee Chairman, has been directing this committee for almost six years. Carol has done an excellent job in planning and implementation so that the group spends a short amount of time. It s a lot of fun, and usually enjoys lunch together at one of the local restaurants. The Salisbury Garden Club is sponsoring a standard flower show from to 1:30 PM to 7:00 PM. General public admission, is May 5 th, 9-5, Saturday, May 6 th 9-3. Members only is May 4 th 4-7. The Annual Richmond Council Luncheon will be held at the Meadowbrook Country Club, 3700 Cogbill Road, Richmond, VA The club has a Gillette Garden that can be toured. Frances Thrash is the featured speaker. The topic is Creative Flower Designs. Canterbury Garden Club is hosting its annual Plant Sale on Saturday, May 6th from 9 AM to 12 Noon at 1405 Giltspur Road in Henrico County's West End. Please plan to stop by for a wonderful variety of perennials for sun, partsun, and shade successfully grown in our members' gardens. Selections will include hostas, lilies, irises, ground covers, ornamental grasses, cut flower perennials, small shrubs. Vendor selections include herbs from Lavender Fields, showy perennials and annuals from Ashwood Gardens. Free admission and free on street parking. Great prices! Raffle opportunity. Rain or shine.
