1 Friday Fast Facts June 19, 2015 Volume 3 Issue 11 On June 3, 2015 Titusville Fire & Emergency Services provided a truck display at Sonny s BBQ as part of their Superhero s vs. Villain s Day to celebrate the child of a local Titusville family, 4-year-old Caleb, and his remission status after completion of chemotherapy treatments. The love for superheroes spurred Sonny s BBQ theme, as evidenced by the photographs. Truck 13 s crew consisting of Lieutenant Brian Marfitt, D/O David Neeld and Firefighter Jermaine McKoy (pictured with Caleb) provided the engine display. A total of 30 children and parents participated in the event. On Tuesday, June 16 th, Lt. Glen Hamann and Public Affairs Coordinator Amy Matthews attended a Crime Awareness meeting in the neighborhood of Country Club Heights, which was the first meeting for residents. They gathered to discuss ways to open communications with each other and the Titusville Police Department. Glen and Amy were on hand to answer questions and give information about community safety and crime prevention. This was a great opportunity for the neighborhood to express concerns and thank the Titusville Police Department for their services. Page 1 of 8
2 On Monday, June 15, 2015, Titusville Police Department received cutting edge trauma tourniquet kits and specialized training on their use, thanks to the generosity and proactive efforts of Khalid Siddiqui M.D. and Parrish Medical Center. The trauma kit disbursement and training was conducted at Parrish Medical Center in Titusville. Patrol and S.W.A.T. officers were trained to safely identify indicators for tourniquet application, and properly apply them to extremities. This training effort is the brainchild of Dr. Siddiqui, Medical Director of the Emergency Department, Parish Medical Center, Team Health and Emergency Room providers. This unified medical front supports the importance of early aggressive prehospital application of tourniquets in life threatening extremity trauma. The collaboration realizes that these kits and training for first responding officers will save lives. The collaboration of health care professionals donated the kits and hands on practical training for the officers. On May 30 th, members of the Titusville Police Department assisted an 89-year-old senior resident of Titusville move to a new residence. Because she did not have the physical abilities or the financial means to move her personal belongings she called upon a victims advocate with the State Attorney's Office. The advocate then contacted TPD because of the department's reputation with TRIAD and North Brevard S.A.L.T. and arranged the move for the citizen. This move would not have been possible without the following officers volunteering their time and their personal vehicles. Special thanks to Deputy Chief Tom Barry, Lt. Chris DeLoach, Lt. Glen Hamann, Sgt. John Cruz, Corporal Paul Heineman and his son Michael, Officer Pat Herndon, his wife Carolina and their daughter Christina, Officer Jeremy Pergerson and his wife Tiffany and Officer Thomas Krewson. On June 4, 2015, Titusville Fire & Emergency Services participated in its first Heroes Reading Program at The Kid s Place Preschool and Daycare at Indian River City Methodist Church. The Heroes Reading Program is a program that allows firefighters to maintain interaction with the children of our community. The focus of the books read to the children is on a wide range of safety topics. Station 13 s crew consisting of Lieutenant Brook Smith, D/O Bobby Crocker and Firefighter Andrew Johnson supported the reading segment and the truck display for the event. Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore also provided assistance throughout the event. A total of 52 children and teachers attended the event. Page 2 of 8
3 On June 4, 2015, Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore provided the residents and staff of Titusville Towers with a Hurricane Preparedness presentation. The presentation focused on what to take when evacuation is required in an emergency. It stressed the Five P s of Evacuation : People, Prescriptions, Papers, Personal Needs and Priceless Items 60 residents and staff members attended the presentation. Officers spoke to 50 children attending a summer school program at Coquina. They described some of the job responsibilities involved in being a police officer and how they could one day be a Law Enforcement Officer themselves. Station 10 s crew, consisting of Acting Lieutenant Adam Vaknin, Acting D/O Brian Moss and Firefighter Dustin Davis provided the reading for the event, followed by an equipment display. Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore was also present. Eleven children and teachers attended the event. Support Services: Purchasing The City received from Cliff Schuler Auctioneers a check in the amount of $11, that represents the proceeds from the sale of City assets at the May 31, 2015 auction. $7,200 will go to the Stormwater Utility Fund; $4, will go to the General Fund; and $187 will go to the Contraband Fund. Support Services: Purchasing The City has recently issued several City Bids and RFPs as follows: Purchase of Code Enforcement Pick-up trucks. Bids are due June 24, 2015 Annual contract to pump out stormwater baffle boxes. Bids are due June 26, 2015 Installation of a floating plant MAT System in the Senior Center Stormwater Pond. Bids are due June 29, 2015 Annual Contract to install Backflow Preventers. Bids are due July 13, 2015 Annual contract for transmission repairs. There were turtles everywhere during the 5 th Annual Titusville Sea Turtle Festival this past Friday in downtown Titusville. This was the fourth year that Maureen Phillips, Titusville Water Conservation and Public Outreach Manager participated at the festival providing water conservation information and challenging festival attendees to test their water knowledge with the Water Wheel. The line in front of Conservation s table remained constant all night as attendees vied to win a turtle pens and turtle pins with each spin of the wheel. Visitors to Conservation s table also received a tote filled with information on irrigation restrictions, the Showerhead Exchange, Florida-Friendly fertilizer use, the Toilet Retrofit Rebate Program, and dog waste pickup. This year was the first year that in addition to participating as a vendor at the festival, Ms. Phillips also took an active role on the festival planning committee. An estimated 600 people attended the Friday night portion of the festival sponsored by the Downtown Titusville Merchants Association, Friends of Canaveral, the Canaveral National Seashore, and the City of Titusville. On June 6, 2015 Titusville Fire & Emergency Services hosted a Pizza Party at Fire Station #11 for special junior high students from Madison Middle School and St. Teresa s Catholic School. These students participated in creating safety-themed coloring pages for the development of a Fire Prevention coloring book for younger elementary and preschool students. After consumption of the pizza, the students were treated to a station tour and engine display. Station 11 s crew consisted of Acting Lieutenant Bobby Crocker, Acting D/O Roman Lane and Firefighter Patrick King; Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore also assisted with the event. A total of 11 students and parents attended the appreciation event. Neighborhood Services - is excited to announce the first edition of the Neighborhood News quarterly newsletter published by the staff at the Harry T. Moore Social Service Center. The newsletter is located on the City s website under the Social Services division of Neighborhood Services, department of Community Development. For more information on this and future publications, contact Ibis Camacho, Social Services Advocate at or ibis.camacho@titusville. com Neighborhood Services- Terrie Franklin, Director and Nicole Bonito, Grants Manager attended the annual Florida Community Development Association (FCDA) conference in Daytona Beach. At this conference, HUD monitored the City on its management and operations of the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP3) grant program. As a result, the City received no findings or concerns regarding the program, and received a satisfactory notice. Page 5 of 8
6 On May 29, 2015 Titusville Fire & Emergency Services Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore passed her State examination and received her certification for Fire and Life Safety Educator by the State of Florida Division of the State Fire Marshal, Bureau of Fire Standards and Training. This latest certification is in addition to State certifications for Life Safety Educator I and Life Safety Educator II that she already possesses. On June 9, 2015 Titusville Fire & Emergency Services visited Parrish Medical Center. Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore provided a presentation on the department s File of Life program The File of Life allows emergency personnel to access medical data (previously completed by the individual and placed in the placket) when the patient may not be able to speak or is unconscious. Chronic medical conditions, types of medications, emergency contact information are vital components for medical assessments and notifications. Titusville Fire and Emergency Services Department is pleased to introduce its newest employee, Brian Webber. Mr. Webber has been appointed as the department s newest fire inspector, working under the direction of the fire prevention division director, Senior Inspector II Mark Whorton. Brian recently retired from the Brevard Public School District Plant Operations and Maintenance Department. He served in that department in the position of Environmental Specialist and Fire Safety Inspector. Page 6 of 8
