23 POINSETT SERIES - Soil # J195B The Poinsett series consists of very deep, well drained soils formed in silty glacial till on uplands. Permeability is moderate. Slopes range from 0 to 15 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 23 inches, and mean annual air temperature is about 43 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Poinsett silty clay loam - on a northeast facing, 3 percent slope in a cultivated field. When described the soil was moist throughout. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Poinsett soils are nearly level to gently rolling on uplands having plane to convex slopes with gradients of 0 to 9 percent. Poinsett soils formed in calcareous silty glacial till. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 38 to 48 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation ranges from 17 to 24 inches. Growing season is about 120 to 130 days; average growing season precipitation ranges from 15 to 18 inches; and growing degree days are about 2500 to Elevation ranges from 1000 to 2150 feet. Soil Descriptions GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils have plane or slightly concave slopes with gradient of 0 to 2 percent on glacial moraines and lake plains. They formed in calcareous clayey glacial lacustrine or local alluvial sediments. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 40 to 44 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 20 to 27 inches. Frost-free days range from 120 to 172. Elevation above sea level ranges from 990 to GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: Fulda soils are associated with the well drained Nutley soils, the moderately well drained Sinai soils, and the very poorly drained Dovray soils, which are members of a hydrosequence with the Fulda soils. The silty, well drained Poinsett soils and the moderately well drained Waubay soils are in the nearby uplands in some places. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained. Surface runoff and internal drainage are slow. Permeability is slow. A perched water table occurs in most years at depths of 1 to 3 feet from October to June. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Barnes, Forman, Heimdal, Oldham, Parnell, Sinai and Waubay soils. Barnes soils are fine-loamy and are on adjacent upland slopes. Forman soils have argillic horizons and are on adjacent slopes. Heimdal soils are coarse-loamy and are on similar landscape positions as the Poinsett soils. Waubay soils have mollic epipedons more than 16 inches thick and are in swales and shallow drainageways. Oldham, Parnell, and Sinai soils have fine textured control sections. In addition, the Oldham and Parnell soils are more poorly drained and are in depressions. Sinai soils are on somewhat higher lying ice-walled lake positions in the silty glacial drift landscape. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface runoff is low or medium. Permeability is moderate. WAUBAY SERIES - Soil # J195B, J256A The Waubay series consists of very deep, moderately well drained soils formed in local silty glacialfluvial deposits on flats or footslopes, in slight depressions and in swales. These soils have moderate permeability. Slopes range from 0 to 6 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 21 inches, and mean annual temperature is about 42 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Waubay silt loam - under cultivation. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Waubay soils are level to gently sloping and are in slight depressions and swales, and on flats and footslopes on uplands. Slopes are plane or concave with gradients of 0 to 6 percent. The soils formed in calcareous silty glacialfluvial deposits. Mean annual temperature ranges from 42 to 48 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation ranges from 17 to 26 inches. Growing season is about 120 to 160 days; average growing season precipitation ranges from 15 to 18 inches; and growing degree days are about 2500 to GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Barnes, Buse, Forman, Oldham, Parnell, and Poinsett soils. Barnes, Buse, and Forman soils are fine-loamy. Poinsett soils have mollic colors less than 16 inches thick. Barnes, Buse, Forman, and Poinsett soils are on convex slopes above the Waubay soils. Oldham and Parnell soils have a fine textured control section and are in the deeper swales and depressions. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained. Areas in swales receive additional moisture as run-in from adjacent soils. Runoff is low or medium. Permeability is moderate. A temporary water table is at a depth ranging from 3.5 to 5 feet in the spring of most years. FULDA SERIES - Soil # J199A The Fulda series consists of very deep, poorly drained soils that formed in lacustrine or local alluvial sediments on glacial lake plains and moraines. These soils have slow permeability. They have slopes of 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 24 inches. Mean annual air temperature is about 44 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Fulda silty clay loam with a plane slope on an icewalled lake plain in a cultivated field. BIGSTONE SERIES - Soil # J32A The Bigstone series consists of very deep, very poorly drained soils that formed in calcareous, local alluvial sediments and the underlying calcareous loamy glacial till in depressions on till plains. These soils have moderately slow or moderate permeability. Their slopes range from 0 to 1 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 44 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation is about 26 inches. TYPICAL PEDON: Bigstone silt loam on a slope of less than 1 percent in a depression on a till plain. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Bigstone soils have plane or concave slopes ranging from 0 to 1 percent in depressions on till plains. They have primarily formed in calcareous local alluvium and the underlying calcareous, glacial till. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 40 to 44 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 24 to 27 inches. The frost-free days range from 120 to 172. The elevation above sea level ranges from 990 to 1950 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Esmond, Flom, Fram, Hamerly, Heimdal, Lakepark, Svea, and Vallers. The well drained Esmond and Heimdal soils are on adjacent uplands. The moderately well drained and somewhat poorly drained Fram, Hamerly, and Svea soils are on low convex rises, concave foot slopes, and side slopes. The poorly drained Lakepark and Vallers soils are in drainageways and on flats. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Very poorly drained. Runoff is very slow or ponded. Permeability is moderately slow or moderate. The apparent seasonal high water table is at depths of 1 foot above to 1 foot below the surface. A ponded phase is recognized with the water table at 0 to 3 feet above the surface in most years. MARYSLAND SERIES - Soil # J12A The Marysland series consists of very deep, poorly and very poorly drained soils that formed in glacial lacustrine, alluvium or outwash sediments which consists of a 20 to 40 inch loamy mantle over sandy or sandy-skeletal sediments. These soils are on stream terraces, outwash channels, outwash plains, flood plains and lake plains. They have moderate permeability in the upper part and rapid permeability in the underlying material. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 43 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation is about 22 inches. TYPICAL PEDON: Marysland loam with a plane level slope on a glacial lake plain in a meadow. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Marysland soils have plane, slightly concave, or slightly convex slopes. They formed in glacial lacustrine, alluvium or outwash with a 20 to 40 inch upper loamy mantle over sandy and gravelly sediment in drainageways and flats on glacial stream terraces, outwash channels, outwash plains, outwash plains, flood plains and lake plains. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual temperature ranges from about 38 to 45 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 18 to 24 inches. Frostfree days range from 100 to 150. Elevation above sea level ranges from 800 to 2350 feet.

24 Soil Descriptions GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Renshaw, Fordville, Spottswood, and Divide soils which are members of a hydrosequence with the Marysland soils. The Renshaw and Fordville soils are well drained and are on higher lying or more sloping terrain. The Spottswood and Divide soils are moderately well and somewhat poorly drained. The Spottswood soils have plane or slightly concave slopes and lack a calcic horizon at shallow depths. The Divide soils have plane or slightly convex slopes. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly and very poorly drained. Runoff is slow. Permeability is moderate in the upper loamy mantle and rapid in the 2C horizon. Depth to an apparent seasonal high water table is as high as.5 to 1.5 feet at some time from November through July in most years for the poorly drained phase. The very poorly drained phase has an apparent high water table at depths of +1.0 to 1.0 feet during January to December in most years. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Egeland soils are on terraces, outwash plains, and uplands. Slope gradients typically are less than 6 percent, but range from 0 to 20 percent. Egeland soils formed in moderately coarse-textured glaciofluvial deposits and sandy materials of fans and beaches of lake plains. Mean annual air temperature ranges from about 36 to 48 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation ranges from 15 to 24 inches. Growing season is 120 to 155 days; average growing season precipitation ranges from 15 to 20 inches; and growing degree days are about 2500 to GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Heimdal soils and the Arvilla, Eckman, Embden, Fordville, Forman, Maddock, Peever, Poinsett, Renshaw and Swenoda soils. The Arvilla, Eckman, Heimdal, and Maddock soils are on similar nearby landscapes. Arvilla soils have sand and gravel below depths of 14 and 25 inches. Eckman soils have a coarse-silty particle size control section. Maddock soils have a sandy particle size control section. Embden and Swenoda soils are on foot slopes below the Egeland soils. They have mollic epipedons more than 16 inches thick. Fordville and Renshaw soils are on nearby terraces and outwash plains. They are fine-loamy over sand and gravel. The Forman, Peever, and Poinsett soils are on nearby glacial till plains. Forman and Peever soils have an argillic horizon. Poinsett soils have a fine-silty series control section. VALLERS SERIES - Soil # J11A The Vallers series consists of very deep, poorly drained soils that formed in calcareous fine-loamy till on till plains, moraines and lake plains. These soils have moderately slow permeability. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 22 inches, and mean annual air temperature is about 43 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Vallers loam, on a plane slope on a glacial moraine in cropland. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Vallers soils are on level and nearly level slight rises, shallow depressions and drainageways of till plains, moraines and lake plains. They are on slightly concave to slightly convex slopes with gradient of 0 to 3 percent. These soils formed in fine-loamy, calcareous till of Late Wisconsinan Age. In some areas, these soils have a silty lacustrine mantle as much as 24 inches thick. The mean annual air temperature is about 32 to 45 degrees F, and the mean annual precipitation is about 12 to 26 inches. Frost-free period ranges from 90 to 150 days. Elevation ranges from 650 to 2350 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Langhei, Barnes, Forman, Formdale, Svea, Hamerly, Parnell and Quam soils in a hydrosequence with the Vallers soils on till plains and moraines; and the Roliss, Kratka, Strathcona and Hamre soils on lake plains. The somewhat excessively drained Langhei soils; the well drained Barnes, Forman,and Formdale soils; the moderately well drained Svea soils; and the somewhat poorly drained Hamerly soils are on higher lying or more sloping terrain. The very poorly drained Parnell and Quam soils are in depressions. The Roliss soils do not have a calcic horizon. The Kratka and Strathcona soils have 20 to 40 inches of sandy materials in the upper part. The Hamre soils are on lower lying areas and have a histic epipedon. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained. Runoff is negligible to low. Permeability is moderately slow. An apparent seasonal high water table is at a depth of 0.5 to 1.5 feet at some time during the period of March through July. EGELAND SERIES - Soil # J8A, J8B The Egeland series consists of very deep, well drained soils formed in glaciofluvial deposits. These soils are on terraces, outwash plains, and uplands. They have moderately rapid permeability. Slopes range from 0 to 20 percent. Mean annual air precipitation is about 22 inches, and mean annual temperature is about 44 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Egeland sandy loam - on a northeast-facing convex slope of 3 percent in cultivation. When described, the soil was moist throughout. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface runoff ranges from negligible to low depending on slope. Permeability is moderately rapid. SVERDRUP SERIES - Soil # J7B The Sverdrup series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in glacial outwash deposits consisting of a loamy mantle and underlying sandy deposits. These soils have moderately rapid permeability in the upper part and rapid permeability in the lower part. These soils are on outwash plains, terraces, and moraines. They have slopes of 0 to 18 percent. Mean annual temperature is 43 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation is 22 inches. TYPICAL PEDON: Sverdrup sandy loam with a plane slope of 2 percent on a glacial outwash plain in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Sverdrup soils have plane or convex slopes on glacial moraines, terraces, and outwash plains. The slopes are commonly short, and the range is 0 to 18 percent. These soils formed in calcareous, coarse-loamy and sandy glacial outwash. The mean annual temperature is 40 to 45 degrees F. The mean annual precipitation is 20 to 26 inches. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Clontarf, Malachy, and Arveson soils, which formed in sediments similar to those of Sverdrup soils and are members of a drainage sequence with those soils. Moderately well drained Clontarf and moderately well and somewhat poorly drained Malachy soils have a thicker mollic epipedon and are on lower- lying terrain. Also, Malachy soils are calcareous in all parts. Poorly and very poorly drained Arveson soils are in nearby level areas and depressions and have a calcic horizon beginning within depths of 16 inches. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface runoff is slow or medium. Permeability is moderately rapid in the upper part and rapid permeability in the lower part. BUSE SERIES - Soil # J235C2 Complex, J96C2 Complex, J106B Complex The Buse series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in loamy glacial till on moraines. These soils have moderate and moderately slow permeability. They have slopes of 3 to 60 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 22 inches. Mean annual air temperature is about 42 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Buse loam with a convex slope of 5 percent on a glacial moraine in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Buse soils have slightly to strongly convex slopes in glacial moraines.
