2 CVHS February 2012 Flower Show Schedule Summary Design Rules & Regulations & Horticultural Rules and & Regulations for exhibiting are provided by separate document. Please keep these as a handy reference as Society points are included. Division I: Design Theme: Valentine Gifts Awards: Best in Show & Judge's Choice 1. Message - a design 2. True Love Knot - a design using two containers 3. Chocolate Swirl - a design 4. Night Star an asymmetrical miniature design, dried material; 5. Night Star Men Only- a miniature design, dried material; not to exceed 5" in any direction Division II: Horticultural Forced Bulbs Awards: Best in Show & Judge's Choice Section A Indoor Plants 6. Forced hardy bulbs - 1 pot/container 10 or under in diameter; e.g.,tulips, hyacinth. 7. Forced hardy flowering corms, rhizome or tubers - 1 pot 10 or less e.g., crocus 8. Amaryllis / Hippeastrum 1 bulb, growing in soil 1 pot or container; may be staked Feature d Des ign Category Technique Significant Times: Techniques taught 7:00 p.m. sharp Show room closed 7:30 p.m. Class 4 The Miniature an asymmetrical type design using dried plant material is created within a 3 inch space all around then there is room to accommodate a longer line and meet the 5 inch space requirements all around. One half of this design is created using different material than the other half. An easy way to determine the sizes of the elements for miniatures is the vase takes one-third, the design one-third and the line one-third. Containers: tiny, able to stand alone or secured to a base; able to retain water for fresh designs; small lumps of florist clay, lids, perfume bottles, not over one.5 inches tall. Tools: cosmetic tweezers, toothpicks, small embroidery scissors or sharp knife Transport your materials in a large container/jar with a secure lid to hold design upside-down. It can also be used to take the design home. Plant Material: Small dried pieces; flowers individual, pods, cones, berries, leaves and line material, like two pine needles, stiff grasses, dried vines, stems; shells, corks. Note: 18 Feb. Spring Garden - a parallel design 3. Spring Thaw - a water viewing ( Reminder--Usually a line design in a shallow container with onehalf to two-thirds of the container surface showing water.) 4. Stained Glass - a miniature design - fresh 5. Stained Glass-Men only - a miniature design -fresh Section A Indoor Plants 6. Containers: tiny vases, bottles, small jugs, glassware etc., that will hold water. Mechanics: water for vases, stickum Tools: Sharp plant cutters, fine wire Plant Material: 4 to 5 different kinds of fresh green material of varied lengths - One type of green (pieces of ivy, grapevine etc.) 3 small flowers of one type. Featured Design Category Technique Significant Times: Techniques taught 7:00 p.m. sharp Show room closed 7:30 p.m. Class 3 The Horizontal Design Horizontal designs are usually symmetrical and apply themselves well for a table centre piece. They may be 1 ½ to 4 times the container s longest diameter. The centre should not be depressed or break the rhythm. The bare stems of the primary branches are to be covered with filler material. Branches are not to hang down and touch the table top. Who needs a wet table or tablecloth? Containers: One large vase or one small one to sit inside another. Plant Material: Your choice of garden flowers and greenery to make a design Tools & Mechanics: Select a good pair of snips or floral scissors, a selection of kenzans, or soaked oasis and securing tape, a water holding container.

Plant Material: Your choice of garden flowers and greenery to make a large design Tools & Mechanics: Select a good pair of snips or floral scissors, a selection of kenzans/pin holders, or wet floral foam, stickum and a small water holding container.

Containers: Locate 5 similar vases, bottles, small jugs, glassware etc., that will hold water. Mechanics: water for vases: Most containers require some means of supporting plant material in desired places. Tools: Clean, sharp plant cutters, pin holders, or wet floral foam and stickum. Plant Material: 4 to 5 different kinds of fresh green material of varied lengths--one (branch or straight, about 30 inches) to become the tallest line of the design --One type of green (pieces of ivy, grapevine etc.) that would be used to connect the containers. 3 flowers of one type, each about 3" across, and other flowers to group.
