TECHNICAL DETAILS LOCATION Capalbio is known for the first time in 805 AD, when it was donated to the Abbey of the Tre Fontane, near Rome, by Charlemagne. The possession was confirmed in 1161 by Pope Alexander III. Later it was under the Aldobrandeschi family, who were followed by Orvieto, the Republic of Siena and the Orsini, who built the Castle. It is an economically florid period, during which important works had been realized and the property enriched with walls, houses, churches and the Fortress had been finished, which building had been begun by Aldobrandeschi. Conquered by the Spaniards in 1555, it was assigned to Cosimo I de Medici as part of his new Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The city subsequently decayed and the area depopulated due to the presence of malaria. Medici s dynasty will keep its sovereignty on Tuscany s grand duchy until 1737, when, the main branch was extinguished, the inheritance will get on to Lorena s dukes. In the meantime the Headmasters State stops to be Spanish property for passing under Austrian s control (1707) and therefore of Borbons (1736). Capalbio lost its administrative autonomy, since Leopoldo I admitted it to Manciano, and in 1842 Leopoldo II admitted it to Orbetello for hundred years. In this period added also highway robbery that terrorized Maremma. After the second War of Indipendence Capalbio passes under the Kingdom of Italy and agricolture is characterized by extensive landed property. In the 1960 Capalbio became an independent comune.
