Now there is lots of room for guests, and Lori sees her favorite table and chairs every day. The adjoining l.iving room with its own fireplace occupies most of the remaining ground floor of the house. The Smalls' stockpile of old building materials influenced the house's exterior design. To start with, they had a supply of stone from a demolished barn and some salvaged logs. There was enough of the flint and Brandywine granite to construct a gable end, but only pan of the front of the house. The house developed in three sections, a common form of many early southeastern Pellnsylvania dwellings. Historically, the smallest part of such a house was constructed first, then added to as the family became more established. Doug used the logs for one end of the house, its smallest section. Its roof is steeply pitched with German-style dormers. The center section, which holds the dining room/kitchen, appears to have been the first addition, and it is more prosperous looking, stuccoed, twostoried, ""ith a pent roof. Its roof line is the highest of the three sections. The stone end, where the living room is, would have been the most costly and added last. Porches, which were never found on eighteenth-century houses, are hidden on the back of the house, one on the ground floor, another opening off the second-story master bedroom. Doug. who lived in Englandfor some years before settling in Chester County, Pennsylvania, designed and built the roofed gate that leads from the flags/olle terrace into all English-style cottage garden. His inspiration may have been the lich-gate, seen in mally old churchyard cemeteries in England, roofed to protect the coffill while it awaited the arrival ofthe clergy for the burial service.
