5 5 EXHIBITORS' RULES AND DEFINITIONS 1 The rules that follow below are published in accordance with the Constitution and Rules of the Society as adopted at the 1992 Annual General Meeting. An entry to any show constitutes acceptance of these rules. 2 All entry forms must be submitted in writing together with entrance fees, not later than 7.30 pm on the Thursday preceding each show, to any of the following: Ralph Hughes Pauline Cramp Rosemary Bennett Emma Hawkesworth Michelle Cason 3 ENTRY FEES: 30p per entry, JUNIOR CLASSES: free Please note that all entry fees must be paid in cash. 5 Thornhill Road, Ickenham 8 Eleanor Grove, Ickenham 3 Rectory Way, Ickenham 22 Lawrence Drive, Ickenham 20 Court Road, Ickenham 4 All exhibitors should use the entry forms included in the Schedule. Juniors are asked to submit their entries on a form separate from that of an adult, and must state their age in years and months as at 4 April This is noted on the reverse of the bench place card for the information of the judges. No child/junior under the age of 10 years (on 4 April 2015) is eligible to enter any of the adult classes. 5 Wherever the Society is affiliated to a national body which prescribes rules for regulating show classes appropriate to its particular interest, and the Society's schedules show such classes, then the regulations of the national body shall take precedence over the Society's show rules wherever there is any conflict of interpretation. 6 Different members of a household may enter in any one show provided that there is only one entry per person in any one class. Any pot plant may only be exhibited once per year. 7 All exhibitors must be amateurs; i.e. they do not earn their livelihood from gardening or the production of items exhibited in the Handicraft, Domestic or Wine sections. 8 A horticultural exhibit shall be a plant or plants (or from a plant or plants) owned and grown by the exhibitor for at least the two months immediately preceding the show. 9 Fruit: All soft fruit to be staged with stalks. For the purpose of these rules, tomatoes, rhubarb and cucumbers are included as vegetables and not fruit. In a collection of fruit, red or white currants are treated as one kind of fruit, as are culinary and dessert apples. Fruit such as apples, pears, plums etc. should be left unpolished. 10 Vegetables: As a broad guide, root vegetables should be staged clean with foliage trimmed and tied - leeks excepted. Beans, peas and tomatoes must be staged with stalks intact. Lettuce, cabbages, cauliflowers etc. should be staged with washed roots intact. See also guidance under individual vegetable classes in the schedule. Wherever possible the variety should be displayed to aid judging; in the case of a tie, additional points may be given for identification. 11 Judging vegetables and fruit: The number of each kind of vegetable and fruit that must be staged is as follows, and the maximum number of points which each kind can obtain is in brackets; pointing can vary according to variety, eg: cherry tomatoes, beefsteak tomatoes, long beet, hot-house grapes. For items not listed, the current Show Secretary can advise. (shows@ickenham-horticultural.org.uk)

All persons other than the appointed Stewards shall leave the place of the exhibition by am. Stewards shall not participate in any way whilst classes are judged in which they have entries. Age will be noted when judging children's exhibits. 14 At the discretion of the Judges, one or more class prize(s) may be withheld if, in their opinion, any exhibit is undeserving of an award. 15 No protest against any award will be entertained unless handed to the Show Secretary in writing before 3 pm on the afternoon of the Show. Any such protest shall be considered by referees - any two non-exhibiting members of the Show or Executive Committees and a Judge if still present at the Show. 16 The Society will not be responsible for any loss or damage to exhibits or exhibitors' property. 17 The Show Committee reserves the right to exclude from the show hall any exhibit which is obviously pest- or disease-ridden or, in the case of roots, unwashed.
7 7 1 8 DEFINITIONS Roses: A specimen A large flowered (previously H.T.); must have one bloom per stem. Buds count as blooms. Cluster flowered (previously floribunda) The expression 'cluster flowered' embraces all Hybrid Polyantha, Shrub and other roses including those previously known as Floribunda Hybrid Tea types which are grown and staged in clusters. It does not include Ramblers or Large Flowered roses classified as such in the R.N.R.S. publication: 'A Selected List of Varieties'. NOTE: For exhibition purposes the expressions Large Flowered and Clustered Flowered apply wherever appropriate to all forms of modern garden roses irrespective of the International Rose Classification, with entries judged on merit in the class entered. A Stem: A new growth that has received no check from cutting, pinching or pruning from the start of growth to flowering and that carries terminal blooms, including buds, but not subsequent lateral growths. Annual: A plant which grows from seed and which naturally and ordinarily flowers, seeds and dies within twelve months. Antirrhinums, Sweet Williams and Wallflowers are treated as annuals for show purposes. Perennial: A plant which lives for two years or more. Perennials include trees, shrubs and plants which grow from bulbs, corms, rhizomes and tubers. Herbaceous: A plant which does not form a persistent woody stem. Spray: A spray is a branch bearing the full number of flowers which is naturally borne on the branch, except in Chrysanthemum Classes where a "Natural Spray" is the last flowering growth consisting of one stem with side growths (not a branch) without a central flower bud. The N.C.S. also defines an "Exhibition Spray" (not used in our show classes). Variety: The word 'variety' has generally been replaced by the more modern term 'cultivar ; the term 'kind' has been retained. eg: 'leeks' and 'lettuces' are different kinds of vegetables 'Kweik' and 'Dandie' are different cultivars of lettuce Bowl: The width must exceed the height; handle-type bowl permitted. Vase: The height must exceed the maximum width. Pot sizes: In accordance with RHS Rules, the diameter of a pot is the inside measurement made as near to the top as possible but without including any part of the roll of the rim. Novice or beginner: A person who has not won a first prize in any Society's show in such a section. Whenever possible, exhibitors should display the names of cultivars exhibited. NB: Show display vases are normally available at the hall.
8 8 1 9 SPECIAL CONDITIONS FOR WINE EXHIBITS In addition to the application of all relevant general rules given above, the following will apply specifically to wine exhibits: a) All wines must have been made by the exhibitor. b) Bottles must be of clear glass and be corked with a flanged cork. A small glass must be supplied with each exhibit. c) Bottles should be filled so that when the cork is pushed right home the air space in the neck of the bottle is between 6mm and 20mm in depth. d) All bottles must be appropriately labelled, but should exclude any reference to the exhibitor's identity. 20 JAMS AND PRESERVES Jars should be dated, labelled and sealed with a transparent cover for show purposes. 21 ALLOTMENTS COMPETITION See inside back cover for Allotment Competition details. 22 A STRING OF ONIONS This exhibit requires between 9 and 13 onions which may be either grown from seed or set, but all must be of the same variety. The onions may be tied with fillis or sisal or plaited. The bulbs should be clean and well-dried, with the roots trimmed, and the foliage should be dry and any excess trimmed off after tying. The string must have a small loop for hanging the onions for display purposes. The exhibit will be judged for neatness in tying and the condition of the onions. Other than uniformity, onion size is not a factor. Please note that the roots must be trimmed. If you have any questions regarding the show classes, or their staging, please do contact any member of the Committee; if they cannot help personally, they will refer you to the relevant person who may be able to assist you. You may also contact the current Show Secretaries shows@ickenham-horticultural.org.uk
