3 Some useful information about entering the show. The show is held on a Sunday in Preston Candover Village Hall. The doors open for you to bring your entries between 8am and 10.30am and vases, cling film, foam for plants, scissors, plates and anything else you may need to make your entries look as polished as possible, are provided. Each entrant is given a number, and an entry slip with their details for each entry they have brought. Your name is hidden from the judges. At 10.30am you are asked to leave the hall so that the judges can do their work. They look at the entries in each class and can award a first, second, third or highly commended. The qualities they are looking for vary depending on the class, but you can do a lot to make your entries look good. Points and certificates are awarded and you can get cups, rosettes and prize money: 1.00 for a first, 80p for a second and 50p for a third. These are some general tips to help but any of the Stewards on the day will be more than happy to give advice. Read the class entry carefully. If it says 5 beans or 3 stems of phlox make sure you have the right number and types. If you re not sure whether something is a correct, check with a Steward. They are all gardening club members and are more than happy to help. We provide the vases for all classes except the flower arrangements. Make sure the vase you pick is the right size for your flowers a variety of sizes are available and paper and foam for packing them is provided. Good presentation counts. If the class specifies a maximum size for a pot or arrangement, make sure your entry fits. A flower arrangement which is too big will not get a first even if it is beautiful. Photos, pot plants and some cookery classes also often have size restrictions. 2

4 If something says displayed on sand, water or a paper plate, don t panic. They are provided. Similarly, food should be covered with cling film but if you haven t any handy it will be there for you to use. If you are exhibiting flowers, plants or pot plants, check them over before you leave them. Remove any dead flowers or scrubby looking leaves and generally do a bit of primping. All entries should have been grown or made by you, though if you are entering a flower arrangement class you can buy in flowers and foliage to create those. Be careful with food and preserves. We prefer not to poison the judge! Preserves should be in straight sided, sealed jars with plain lids or cellophane. No branded lids, please. Please label with the variety and date made (especially for curds.) You can use your own dishes for food classes but the entries must be covered with cling film. After the judging the hall remains closed until 2.30pm. This gives the Stewards time to write out the certificates and calculate the prize money and cup winners. You are welcome back in then with friends and family. Your entries will not be released to you until after the prize giving which is usually at about 3.15pm. If you do not reclaim your entry, mark it not for sale or ask the Stewards to retrieve it for you, it will be given to a visitor in return for a small donation to club funds. Entry fees for adults are 30p and can be paid on the door only if you have entered online. Entry forms should be filled in and sent in in advance as it helps Stewards to allocate space in the hall. Children under 16 can enter anything they want to free of charge. In all cases of everything the JUDGES DECISION IS FINAL. 3

Club Challenge for ADULT members 2017 Members have been each given a gladiolus bulb of the miniature variety Clemence to grow on in a pot. The final pot should not be more than 8 (20cm) in diameter.

The plants will be displayed in the hall and the bloom judged the best by the flower judge will receive the club challenge certificate for

12 Children s Cucumber Challenge 2017 On the 24 th June 2017 Preston Candover Primary School will be holding its annual school fair. The Candover Valley Gardening Club will have a plant stall at the fair and any child visiting the stall can ask for a cucumber plant which they will be given free. They can take it home and nurture it in a pot or plant it in the ground, and then bring their best cucumber to the Show in the Village Hall on August 13 th. The vegetable judge will be asked to look at all the entries and decide which is the best cucumber. A rosette will be awarded to the winner. 11
