Schiltach, October The small guesthouse Smucke Steed (Danish for pretty place ) in Gluecksburg, Germany, only 15 kilometres from the Danish border, is the perfect example of how to discreetly and gracefully restore and bring an old building back to life. Christine and Soenke Ross, two globetrotters and experienced hoteliers from Hamburg, made their private and professional dream of an individual, small, but exclusive guesthouse come true in this villa built in 1898, a former finishing school, and later on, a group and recreational house run by the Church. When we saw the house, its large grounds and old trees, it was love at first sight. At the time, however, it looked more like a youth hostel, Christine Ross recalls. It was clear that we would need to do a lot of work. Slowing Down Everyday Life The new owners remained true to the clean and simple style of the interior design, while selecting fittings and furnishings of particularly high quality. Together with interior designer and

2 artist Johanna Putensen, the owners paid great attention to detail, quality and sustainability in creating and furnishing the 16 light-flooded and comfortable Scandinavian-style rooms. In the mornings, guests can sleep in and look forward to a homemade breakfast, which, depending on the weather, is served on the sunny terrace with a view of the Flensburg Firth, or inside, near the warm, cosy fireplace. A Restorative Rain Shower Guests can also relax and recharge in the guesthouse s light, modern bathrooms.
