2 Down by the Seaside It hasn t been an ideal summer for enjoying an English beach holiday but we invested in lighting the new Kestrel Furniture showroom in Southwold behind Adnams Shop ( Insulation Issues Increased use of Insulation in ceiling voids to meet the requirements of building regulations does restrict the use of recessed fittings and even before the closing down of the available air gaps we came across some real horror stories! LED downlight manufacturers do generally require an air gap around the fitting (If in doubt ask!!) but remote drivers in some cases can be taken out of the ceiling and located in accessible cupboards up to 25m or so away (as for the Reo and driver ) which does help. Also using remote Multiloads with low voltage spotlights and downlights is also a solution we have been specifying for some time. The small Bruck Micros fitting (left) can sit on its own tiltable gamble and as such is ideal for A frame spaces where no usable void exists.

3 WORK IN PROGRESS:This photograph shows Norwich Electrical Company s electricians finishing the lighting at St Mary Watton. This was part of a major refurbishment by Denis Tuttle Architect of which our lighting design was a part. In2theFuture installed a lighting control system that allows the church to set scenes for various services and uses. The pews were removed and a new floor was laid and this together with building works, re-decoration and new sound and vision systems has created a very flexible space for the future. The church was re-dedicated to a packed congregation by the Bishop of Norwich. Nalc also designed a new lighting scheme for St Stephen s in Norwich. This venerable building has been undergoing major works under the care of Reynolds Jury Architecture. We specified new 10W recessed LED up-lights for the nave and chancel columns as part of the overall lighting plan and this wonderful photograph taken at dusk by David White shows the now clear nave and chancel through to the east window. ( The next phase is now underway which includes a light ring in the new west door entrance porchway and lighting for the kitchen and office.

4 The Walpole Arms Has now re-opened after a major refit by it s new owners the Harrold Family and Nalc were pleased to be commissioned to design and supply the outside lighting as well as addressing the architectural elements inside. The Walpole Arms has an exciting new menu using seasonal and local produce; why not give it a try?

5 Private House in West Norfolk This Georgian house in West Norfolk has been refurbished and extended and Nalc carried out a full internal and external lighting design. These pictures show the property finished but awaiting the final dressing of new carpets. (David Marris Architect)

6 The finishing touches were being put to the new Executive Suite at Norwich City Football Club as we went to press where we have designed a new lighting system for this multi-use space planned by Feilden and Mawson Architects. The electrical contractors Eyre Electrical were just hanging the last few Bruck pendants which,with the iguzzini Sistema low energy dimmable 42W downlights and Deltalight Reo LED 8W downlights, provide the illumination. In2thefuture provided lighting control to provide scene setting and light level variation. The pendant colours were chosen to compliment Caroline Fooks palate for the interior design and the layout of the fittings to coincide with the overall design. Any reporting of general lighting news must lead with the untimely death at 54 of the Architect and lighting designer Jonathan Spiers ; I remember being transfixed by the Gateshead Millenium Bridge at night when the lighting gave it another life beyond its daytime appearance. The lighting of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is quite magical using a subtlety of colour which brings out the form and function of the building.
