The main principle of the Fingerplan implying that the layer-upon-layer growth should stop and that most of the future city should develop in narrow town fi ngers along exiting and future railways.-john JørgensenCOPENHAGEN:Evo lution of the Finger Structure The public should have easy access to infrastructural facilities such as commuter train lines and motorways, as well as they should be able to enjoy and live close to nature.
Principles of the 5 Finger Plan The public should have easy access to infrastructural facilities such as green spaces, bike paths, commuter trains and motorways. People should have the possibility to enjoy forests and lakes, agricultural landscapes, rivers, streams and fjords and still benefi t from the close proximity to the city centre.

The Copenhagen Story from from traffic focus to a people-oriented place: Phase 1 / : Pedestrian streets Phase 2/ : Café culture Phase 3/ 2000-now: Recreational activities/playgrounds
From 1962 and onwards, streets and squares were converted to pedestrian areas, which give attractive conditions for walking and recreation.
37 % bike to and from work or school (City of Copenhagen, Bicycle Account 2008). 70 % continue in the winter time.
Right: Green bicycle lane city bikes were introduced in 2004 and can be borrowed for a small deposit.
Strædet marked the introduction of a new type of pedestrian priority street. Despite only 8-11 meters of width, it carried heavy traffic. In 1989, it was experimentally reclassified as a pedestrian priority street.
The City of Copenhagen has developed a plan of action for city spaces. The plan illustrates potential locations for new city spaces, walking streets and connections that can serve as the foundation for further and more precise selection of focal area.
Mikado comprised three blue gravel paths and one blue asphalt path criss-crossing a green space. Every path band constituted an activity space with a particular theme. The paved path lent itself to sports, basketball. The remaining paths had more recreational programmes such as a barbecue area with concrete blocks and a chill-out The intention was to create an urban space capable of changing in accordance with the shifting needs of its users and capable of generating interaction between the people who live, study and work in the area
Thematic connections of different lengths, affiliated with specific city areas and thus offering special experiences. Planning and design of urban connections should be coordinated with the various city areas so they can be reached within a reasonable time frame, thus making the networks and systems for soft transport more attractive to use.

C o n cl u si o n Facts about Ørestad Ørestad is an area which extends more than 5 kilometres from the outskirts of the city centre to the edge of Copenhagen Airport. The district is about 600 metres wide and 5 km long. It has a total area of 310 hectares, equivalent to 3.1 million square metres. 3.1 million square metres of floor space can be built in Ørestad. There are six Metro stations in Ørestad: Islands Brygge, DR Byen, Sundby, Bella Center, Ørestad and Vestamager. 60% of Ørestad will consist of commercial and office buildings, 20% will be comprised of residential units and 20% of the buildings will be for cultural facilities, services, retail trade and institutions. 80,000 people will work in Ørestad. 20,000 people will live in Ørestad. Nearly 20,000 people are already studying in Ørestad
C o n cl u si o n The legislation regarding Ørestad was enacted in 1992 because the unused areas were regarded as being too valuable. Ørestad Development Corporation (Ørestadsselskabet I/S) was founded March 11, 1993 to manage the growth of the city district. The corporation is owned 55% by Copenhagen municipality and 45% by the Ministry of Finance. The development is expected to take 20 to 30 years at a cost of about 175 million, and it is expected that 20,000 people will live in Ørestad, 20,000 will study, and 80,000 people will be employed in the area. At the beginning of 2008, 53% of the area had been sold. The winning project of an international architectural competition held in 1994 revealed an overall masterplan for Ørestad, dividing the area into four districts. The Finnish design office APRT and Danish KHR Arkitekter established a joint-venture and presented a final plan in The first office building was completed in The first residential buildings were completed three years later. Currently, there are more than 3000 flats as well as 192,100 m² of office space in Ørestad. In addition, a total of 13 buildings are under construction.
