2 The Showhouse by Kathtrina Furlong My idea behind this year s Showhouse was to make it relevant to today s market, to be informative, to be up to the minute on today s designs, yet be practical and useable in today s every day family home. We have all come through a difficult recession and appreciate the value of money even more but have also come to like the finer things in life. This Showhouse aims to show you how this is achieveable. To do this I have drawn from my 29 years experience dealing with nearly every aspect of design within the home, and being a Mom I understand the demands a growing family can put on the home. So, I asked myself what are the common issues that most of my clients are coming to me with, and what is their wish list. When I meet my clients for the first time I ask if you won the lotto, what would you like from your home? These words immediately let the client relax and like a kid in a sweetshop forget about the budget and tell me about their I want or their I would love to have items. This year s Showhouse will have many wants as possible in it, keeping all the items within the mindset of an everyday client. Designing to adapt to the demands of the ever changing household will be mixed together with a wow factor. In order to make the Showhouse a real-life situation, I took to the internet and selected the footprint of a standard three bed semi-detached house with a garage in Dublin, which is currently on the market and I have turned it into a home with all the wishes but with a layout and design that is relevant today, will adapt to future requirements and will last the test of time. Organic is the buzz word for 2018, transgressing from the deep forest colours to delicate pastels. Through the showhouse hints of blue, orange and golds are being use on velvets, linens and wallpapers. I have kept the big ticket items in the neutral tones and introduced jungle patterns and vibrant as accents. The jungle theme will come to life in accent chairs, cushions and accessories, and when the next fashion trend comes along it is only these accessories that will need to be changed to keep the home fresh and up to the minute! Top Tips From The Showhouse Garden Designer Tropical Gardens Without The Tropics It is possible to create a tropical looking garden right here in Ireland, now if you live in Connemara or even the Curragh plains then maybe it might be a step too far but for city and town gardens you can create your own little tropical oasis and here is how to go about it. It s all about set-up and good selection, choosing tropical-look plants with bold colours and lush evergreen foliage. When you get around to planting, do it densely. Aim for a backbone of large and glossy-leafed foliage plants and a variety of bold greens. Introduce vibrant flowering plants among the green. Creating Privacy, Naturally with Specimen Trees Creating Privacy with the use of a well placed tree or a row of specimen espaliered frames is what we do best.
