1 Northiam Horticultural Society (AFFILIATED TO THE ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY) PRESIDENT: FERGUS GARRETT BSC (HONS) AUTUMN NEWSLETTER 2018 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING & CHRISTMAS SOCIAL This year`s AGM and Christmas Social will be held on Friday 7 th December at 7.30pm in the Village Hall and again we will have an evening which combines business and pleasure. Nominations for the Committee, Auditor and any proposals to change the Constitution should be made in writing to reach the Honorary Secretary no later than Mon 5 th November see Items 6-11 of the Agenda. Copies of the current Constitution are available from the Secretary on request. Copies of the Minutes of the last AGM will be available at the Meeting but please bring the Agenda with you. COMMITTEE MEMBERS Averil Phillips, who makes our Village Hall bookings and takes responsibility for our raffles, will be stepping down after 20 years of distinguished work on the committee. Averil was until recently the Joint Show Secretary and we would like to thank her for the tremendous time she has put in over the years. We are still looking to recruit new Committee Members for If you are interested and would like to know more about what is involved then please contact Tony Pomfret ( ) by Monday 5 th November for an informal chat as to what actually goes on behind the scenes. PLANT SALE 2018 On a hot, sweltering day we still had the usual queue for our plant sale. Everyone was in good spirit and bought as much as they could carry. We raised over which among other things, will help to subsidise subscriptions, coach trips, flower shows and the summer & Christmas socials. Next year`s Plant Sale is on Saturday 4th May. We will have more variety of plants (similar to last year). Don`t miss out, get there early and join the queue. There will be the usual mix of perennials, herbs, annuals and vegetables available as well as the Members Top Table where you might just find something extra special or rare. 2 AUTUMN NEWSLETTER 2018 PAGE 2 SUMMER SOCIAL The Society celebrated our Summer Social this year at Great Dixter (by kind invitation from Fergus). The weather was perfect being warm and plenty of sunshine. We were drinking prosecco or fruit juice on the front lawn and enjoying plenty of home-made canapes. Speeches were given by Fergus and our Chairman Tony and afterwards, we were permitted to take our drinks and walk around the beautiful gardens. It was a pleasant and enjoyable evening. SAVILL GARDEN OUTING On Wednesday 27 th June we had our summer outing to Savill Gardens, Great Windsor Park. The gardens are full of history dating back to Some of us had lunch in the Savill Building whilst others bought gifts and plants. We were rewarded with a two-hour boat trip starting at Runnymede, with views of Windsor Castle and a few locks. When we had to go under a bridge that was lower in height than our boat the Captain lowered the roof down electronically, which surprised us all. Afternoon tea was enjoyed on the boat, along with the beating of sunshine. It was a fantastic outing and everyone is asking where shall we go next year? Spare schedules will be available two weeks before the Shows at Northiam DIY and Spar as usual or downloaded via our web page (see page 4). Total size including card must not exceed 10 x8 and photographs showing places should state location. CHILDREN S CLASS (Spring Show 2019 only) DOMESTIC Peanut Butter and Jam Thumbprint Cookies (to given recipe below) Display 5 cookies Recipe makes 12 cookies You will need: 50g butter plus extra to grease a baking sheet 2 tablespoons caster sugar 1 egg yolk 2 tablespoons crunchy peanut butter 8 tablespoons self-raising flour 4 tablespoons jam To make: Preheat oven to 180 C 350 F or gas 4. (ask an adult to do this). Lightly grease a baking sheet. Cream butter and sugar together in a mixing bowl with wooden spoon until soft. Add the egg yolk & peanut butter and mix well. Spoon in the flour and stir to make a soft dough. With lightly floured hands, break off walnut-sized piece of dough and place on baking sheet. Flatten slightly with a fork. Repeat with rest of dough. With your thumb make a deep well in centre of each flattened ball of dough. The cookies will spread out as they cook. Melt the jam slightly in a microwave for 30 seconds on a low setting. Spoon a little into the centre of each cookie. Bake in the centre of the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden.

Make a Spring garden with flowers, foliage and natural materials, such as pebbles, shells etc. HANDICRAFT A greeting card, any medium, size not specified. FLOWER WORKSHOP 2019 We are planning an all-day workshop for beginners and those with some flower arrangement knowledge on 9 th March 2019 with Vanda Goddard (Floral Art Judge). If you are interested please contact Alison Kirk on LECTURES 2018/19 The evening lecture on 2 nd November will be given by our President, Fergus Garrett. We never know what his speech will consist of, but it is always entertaining. This is a very popular date in our diary, so please come in plenty of time. This is followed on 1 st February 2019 with the first of our afternoon lectures by Aaron Bertelsen on The Kitchen Garden. Aaron is the vegetable gardener at Dixter and the author of The Great Dixter Cookbook. He has spent two years at Jerusalem Botanical Gardens in Israel, where he is still a trustee. On 29 th March 2019 we have a talk by Stephanie Donaldson on The History of the Cottage Garden. Stephanie is the National Gardening author, journalist and former garden editor of Country Living Magazine. Her expertise in organic methods led to co-authoring the Prince of Wales book, The Elements of Organic Gardening. We hope to see you there. SOCIETY INFORMATION Northiam Horticultural Society is now on Facebook!
