3 Initial decisions There are many choices you will have to make when arranging a funeral and the early decisions are some of the most important. Our funeral arrangers will talk you through all of your options and support you by taking care of all of the practical arrangements

4 Initial decisions Place of rest One of the first decisions you will have to make will be that of burial or cremation. This is a very personal choice and may be determined by family tradition, religious beliefs or the wishes of the deceased. Once you know what type of funeral it will be, you will then need to decide on the place of committal where the deceased will be laid to rest. Burial Burials commonly take place in a churchyard or cemetery. Churchyards refer to burial sites in church grounds and usually have restrictions on who can be buried there. Many cemeteries accept both religious and non-religious burials, although some are reserved exclusively for a single faith. Your funeral arranger will be able to advise you on the suitability of each of the burial grounds in the local area. If the deceased is to be buried in a new grave, we can assist you with locating and purchasing a new plot, and any requests you have to purchase adjacent plots. If there is already a grave (this is often as part of a family plot), we can assist you in finding out if there is space for a further burial and arranging for the deceased to be buried there. Woodland burials A local woodland burial allows the deceased to rest in peace in the natural surroundings of flora and fauna. Cremation All local crematoria have gardens of remembrance, where ashes can be laid to rest in peace and tranquillity. You will be able to choose from various forms of memorial at the crematorium, such as an entry in a book of remembrance or a miniature headstone. Most local burial grounds have an area set aside for the interment of cremated remains. They usually permit a memorial to your loved one, with most preferring the cremated remains to be interred in some form of vessel. (Please see p.34 for details.) Alternatively, you might wish to have the cremated remains returned to you as a personal remembrance. We can make the necessary arrangements for this, as well as offering a wide selection of caskets and urns. Initial decisions Place of rest 07

5 Initial decisions The service venue The funeral service is an opportunity for those who knew the deceased to gather together and celebrate the life of their loved one. Religious beliefs, traditions and the type of committal, among other factors, can influence where the funeral service is held. In all cases we can discuss the options available to you and help you match your wishes to a suitable venue, as well as liaising with the venue to make arrangements for the conveyance of the deceased. Church If the deceased was Christian, then you may want to arrange a religious service at a church. This might be a church that the deceased attended or a church where the family has traditionally honoured the lives of their loved ones. Some churches will have a churchyard, so that you can hold the service and committal at the same location. In other cases, the coffin will need to be conveyed between the service and the final place of rest. Other religious venues We have experience of arranging funerals for all religions and can suggest appropriate service venues for all beliefs, as well as liaising with the venue to make practical arrangements. Crematorium Most crematoria have facilities where you can hold the funeral service at the same place as the committal. In this case, we can assist you in making the personal arrangements for the service and committal. Alternatively, you might wish to have the service at another location (possibly a religious venue) with a shorter committal service at the crematorium. Other venues Some people prefer to hold the funeral service at an alternative venue of personal choice, before moving on to the final place of rest. Your funeral arranger will be happy to explain the choices that are open to you. 08 Initial decisions The service venue

6 Initial decisions The type of service Early on in the arrangement, you will have to decide upon the type of funeral service you wish to have in memory of the deceased. This will often have an impact on your choice of venue for the service and the final place of rest. Our experienced funeral arrangers can advise you on all types of funeral service and how your choice of service might influence other aspects of the funeral. Religious Different religions mark the passing of life with different forms of service. A Christian service celebrates the life of the deceased and their entrance into a new eternal life, and will usually feature hymns, readings and prayer in remembrance of the loved one. Other religions recognise the passing of life with their own unique ceremonies and rituals according to the rules and traditions of the religion. Your religious leader will be able to advise you on the composition of an appropriate service in honour of your loved one. We will observe all religious and cultural beliefs and assist you in arranging the other elements of the funeral to fit with your religious service. Funeral celebrant There are a number of celebrants within the local area who will be able to provide a personal service based on your requirements. Some of these celebrants have religious training and are therefore able to combine religious aspects, such as hymns and prayers, with some of the more personal aspects the family desires. Humanist There are no religious aspects to a humanist funeral service, focusing rather on paying tribute to the life and memory of the deceased. However, this does not mean that there should be anything in a humanist funeral service to offend the religious; a humanist service is simply an affectionate celebration of life. 7 Initial decisions Our professional fees Our fees cover the cost of a professional funeral arranger to guide you through the arrangement of the funeral, as well as the use and staffing of our facilities. Professional fee 590 Our professional fees account for having an experienced professional funeral arranger to assist you in the process of arranging a funeral, all the way from help and advice on registering the death through to advising on the options available, liaising with places of service and other agents on behalf of the bereaved, and right up to after the service, handling and acknowledging any donations received. Facilities fee 630 Our facilities fee covers the care and accommodation of the deceased until the time of the funeral, the provision of a funeral director on the day of the funeral and necessary bearers. The use of our funeral home facilities and chapel of rest, reception and handling of floral tributes on the day of the funeral, the delivery of floral tributes to one local address and the provision of a 24-hour help and advice line are also included in this fee. Conveyance into our care 150 We provide the necessary staff at any time of the day or night, 365 days a year, who will bring the deceased into our care to rest at one of our chapels (within 15 miles of our offices). This includes the use of a suitable vehicle and all necessary equipment. 8 Initial decisions Chapel of rest The chapel of rest is a quiet, dignified environment in which friends and family can pay their last respects to the loved one. Each of our offices has its own private chapel of rest. So that we can ensure your visit is as peaceful as possible, appointments need to be made and the following guidance should be noted. Once funeral arrangements have been made and confirmed, we suggest that at least three working days should be left before families make appointments at the chapel of rest. This gives time for the completion of paperwork, the preparation of the coffin and the care of the deceased. Please be aware that three days is only a guide and on occasion may have to be extended depending on individual circumstances. Booking an appointment Appointment hours: Monday-Friday Monday-Friday (outside office hours) Saturday Sunday & bank holidays (closed Christmas & Boxing Day) 10am-4.30pm 6pm or 8pm (limited availability) 12:30pm or 3pm 11am or noon Appointments for visits to the chapel of rest should be made through the office where the funeral has been arranged, during normal office hours. Visits to the chapel of rest last for half an hour. If you feel that your family requires longer than this, please let us know when arranging your visit. Out of hours Families may arrange two complimentary visits to the chapel of rest out of office hours. Each additional out-of-hours visit will incur a 40 fee to cover staff attendance. 9 Funeral vehicles As part of the cortege, the funeral vehicle conveys the deceased on their final journey, from the chapel of rest to the funeral service, and then on to the place of committal. Our funeral directors personally maintain the pristine condition of our fleet of cars and we take pride in the upkeep of these vehicles. 12

11 Limousines Funeral vehicles The fees below include the use of the limousine and services of a uniformed chauffeur for the occasion of the funeral, within a 15-mile radius of our offices and for up to two and a half hours (from leaving the chapel of rest). Unless otherwise stated our limousines seat six passengers. The limousine will collect you from a pre-agreed address and form part of the cortege as per your arrangement, including the service and committal. After the service, the vehicle will return you to your chosen destination. Each limousine can carry a party of six, which may be comprised of adults, children and babies. For reasons of safety, children and babies are not permitted to travel on adults laps. Please inform your funeral arranger as soon as possible if children or babies are to travel in the limousine; we can then allow extra time at the house for fitting any travel aids. 14 Funeral vehicles Limousines

12 Horse-drawn funerals Steeped in grandeur, a horse-drawn funeral is a more dramatic choice for conveying the deceased. Stunning black or white horses lead the procession to the funeral venue, lending an element of stateliness to the occasion. 15

13 Horse-drawn funerals Horse-drawn hearses A horse-drawn hearse can be a more traditional tribute to your loved one, adding a real sense of occasion to the funeral. We offer a variety of coloured plumes and drapes, which can personalise the horse-drawn hearse for the day; please speak to your funeral arranger if you would like more information. When possible the horse-drawn hearse will leave from our funeral office, but it is sometimes necessary to meet the cortege closer to the pre-arranged address because of distances. The fees below include the use of an enclosed hearse, horses to draw the hearse and the transportation of staff. 14 A personal tribute Once you have decided on the essential details of the funeral, you can start to think about planning the finer points. These are the personal touches that will help you make this special day a unique tribute to a unique life. 17

15 A personal tribute A personal tribute We offer a variety of bespoke products and services from which you can choose to create a truly individual celebration of life. These range from producing personalised stationery to releasing beautiful white doves into the sky. Order of service & memorial cards Orders of service and memorial cards serve as a keepsake for family and friends. An order of service is also useful during the funeral, featuring words to hymns and readings, as well as information on memorial donations and reception venues. We can relieve some of the stress from your preparations by designing and producing the stationery, and even personalising it with your own photographs and artwork. The date, time and venue of the funeral can be noted in the books, as well as the names of any family pallbearers. Personal effects Some people like to bring items to the funeral office for placement in the coffin; you can either do this yourself or our staff can assist you. If there are any personal effects present when your loved one is brought into our care, we will always inform you. In the case that we do not have clear instruction on your wishes for personal effects on the day of the funeral, they will be removed and retained for your collection at a later date. Newspaper notices We have extensive experience composing reverent notices to commemorate the deceased in local newspapers. We can also place notices in national newspapers and local newspapers in an area where the deceased formerly lived. Donations in memory As part of our service to you, we will collect donations sent in memory of your loved one and take care of the account on your behalf. If you are placing a newspaper announcement, you should state the charity to which donations are payable and whether the family wishes for donations only or flowers and donations. Donations should be sent care of the office at which the funeral arrangements are made. We will close the donations list approximately one month from the funeral and compile a list of the donors. Unless otherwise instructed, we will forward the amount collected and a list of donors to the charity, with details of the deceased and the family s contact information. We will then forward a list of donors and their addresses to the family of the deceased, with a record of the total amount of donations. 18 A personal tribute

16 A personal tribute Floral tributes There is a long-standing tradition of people using flowers as an expression of sympathy and celebration of life. Floral displays are a simple and beautiful way to pay your respects and show your support at the time of the funeral. Floral tributes most commonly adorn the funeral home, funeral vehicle and coffin. You will find that florists offer a vast selection of bouquets, wreaths, sprays, coffin displays and more personal designs for the occasion. Some people like to select their floral tributes from set arrangements offered by the florist, taking their professional advice. Others prefer to create a bespoke tribute, choosing their own combination of styles, flowers and colours. If you wish, you can take this one step further and personalise the floral display with names, sentiments and designs of your choice. Your funeral arranger will be happy to discuss floral tributes with you and place an order on your behalf. Alternatively, you can make your own arrangements for the floral tributes, and your funeral arranger will incorporate them into the funeral as per your wishes. We recommend that the flowers are delivered to the office at which the funeral has been arranged on the morning of the funeral. A personal tribute 19

17 A personal tribute Fireworks Increasingly people are turning to more contemporary types of tribute to celebrate the lives of their loved ones. Illuminating the sky on the night of the funeral, fireworks are a spectacular way to honour the deceased. 18 A personal tribute Music At the service Hymns and classical music have traditionally provided the musical accompaniment to the funeral service. While these remain popular, more and more people are now being remembered with their favourite pop songs, songs from musicals or even music recorded by family and friends. All local crematoria now have the facilities to download music of your choice and play it during the service, in addition to the option to provide an organist. If the funeral is being held at a burial chapel or church, we can arrange for someone to play the organ at the service. We can also provide a choral accompaniment for crematorium services. Soloists - from 70 We know a number of professional soloists who will perform at funeral services. Some prefer to sing classical music or hymns, while others offer a much wider selection. Whatever your wishes, we will endeavour to fulfil them. Bagpipes - from 130 Having a piper to lead or play at the funeral service can be very dramatic and is steeped in tradition and symbolism. Bands - POA Whether you are looking for a New Orleans jazz band or a string quartet, our funeral arrangers will endeavour to organise this to make the funeral as personal as possible. Webcasting and recording of services Personal attendance will always be the first choice, but for those unable to attend, a webcast or recording of the service at least provides the opportunity to watch the event. We can offer this service if the funeral takes place at certain local crematoria. The webcast enables anyone in the world to watch the funeral live in full-screen video, without the need for any technical knowledge or special software. The truth is that the cardboard used in manufacture requires a heavy energy input and harmful chemicals. Instead, we recommend natural coffins as a more environmentally friendly alternative. Alternatively, you can choose for the deceased to be dressed in one of our selection of traditional gowns, which are suitable for both ladies and gentlemen. A reception gives family and friends the chance to gather together and reminisce about the life of their loved one. You may also want to consider a permanent tribute to the loved one in the form of a memorial. 30

A funeral plan can give you peace of mind, knowing that your family will not be burdened with having to make difficult decisions in a time of grief. In association with the Golden Charter, we offer the Independent Way funeral plan a choice of five different plans ranging from the traditional to the elaborate only available through independent funeral directors. The Independent Way not only enables you to make financial provisions for your funeral, but also to tailor a bespoke funeral ceremony to your wishes. Guaranteed cover for all of our services Regardless of how much the cost of our services may rise in the years to come, the plan guarantees that neither you nor your loved ones will be asked for any excess payments. The plan gives you firm assurance that your family will be spared a potential financial problem. There are some costs, however, which we are obliged to pay on your behalf and which do not account for our services. These are known as disbursements and include charges for cemeteries, crematoria, medical fees and the clergy. This is out of our control and may require an additional payment. 35 Moving on Legal considerations The time after the funeral is often an emotional period and unnecessary legal issues can make this even more distressing. A good legal professional will be able to give you sensitive advice on dealing with the legalities associated to bereavement, as well as suggesting ways in which you can ensure family members are provided for in future. Probate Probate refers to the administration of the deceased s estate in the case that they left a will. Where there is a will, a grant of probate gives legal authority to the named executors to administer the estate as per the terms of the will. Letters of administration In the case that there is no will, interested parties have to apply for a letter of administration. This is granted by a court of law and appoints the parties who are responsible for distributing the deceased s estate. Drawing up a will Inheritance tax Inheritance tax is paid on an estate and is sometimes also payable on trusts and gifts. Most estates are not subject to inheritance tax because they fall below the threshold ( 325,000 in ) and if it is applicable, it is usually paid out of the estate before the estate is executed. Asset protection Now might be an appropriate time to think about asset protection. Asset protection safeguards your house against the claims of creditors should you go into care.
