Riverwood CDD Severn Trent Services Field Management Report Site Inspection October 1, 2015 and October 9, 2015* The regular inspection occurred on October 1, 2015, however, additional items have been noted from October 9, Items added from the 9 th will be indicated by date. 1. Lake Management: Per the Beautiful Pond s (BP) report, The heavy rains have helped reduce algae by flushing some of the nutrients out of the lakes. The light rains slowly release water from the lakes, while retaining most of the nutrients that have been washed into the lake from the yards and streets. The water levels are obviously high. All the water control structures that prevent flooding are clean and working properly. a. Lake Maintenance: Lake management details are provided below. RIVERWOOD LAKE INSPECTION FIELD SHEET DATE: October 1, 2015 By: M. Meadows Severity AW Alligator Weed HY Hydrilla VL = Very Low CT Cattails PA Planktonic Algae L = Low DF Dog Fennel PR Primrose M = Medium DW Duckweed TG Torpedo Grass H = High FA Filamentous Algae SE Sedge MI Miscellaneous Weeds BT Baby Tears HV Climbing Hemp Vine PW Pennywort Lake # Water Level Clarity Algae Shoreline Weeds Submerged Weeds Additional Concerns, Comments Lake #1 Lake #2 Wetland I Lake #3 Lake #4 Lake #5 Lake #6 Lake #7 Lake #8 H L Lake #9 H H H H Lake #10 H Y One large exotic cut down; removal of two dead trees; one fallen and the other continued to have dead branches falling. Removed for safety of work crews mowing nearby landscape area, and ease of herbicide crew to be able to move in and out of the area. Large amount of pollen floating on surface, water clarity murky Minimal level of algae; large amount of floating pine needles; issues with bulkhead fixed by golf course staff. See photo. 1
Lake #11 H Y Lake #12 H L HY Lake #13 H Blue Heron Lake #14 H Osprey Chara along the perimeter. Responding well to BP s HY treatment. Osprey. Water clarity murky, although on 10/2 Hydrilla was topping out. BP has recently treated and states it is better than three months ago. Lake #15 H Fountain working Lake #16 H H Several bunches of Pickerlweed appear to be dying TG amongst the Pickerelweed should be hand pulled; wash out along shoreline Lake #17 H H N Lake #18 H L Lake #19 H H N N N Lake #20 Lake #21 H Lake #22 H H N N N Lake #23 Lake #24 Lake #25 Lake #26 Lake #29 Lake #30 Lake #34 Lake #36 H Lake #37 Reclaim Alligator flag along the pond bank near Rivermarsh Dr should be treated to prevent a wall of vegetation; Duck potato should remain. Water clarity murky; clumps of grass being left by lawn crews when they cut the ruffs that are being left along the lake banks Removal of large overhanging branches mostly exotic between pond 19 and Preserve M. Also, removal of large branches from the control structure located backside of pond 19 and Preserve M. Several branches left due to high water. These should be removed during dry season. Grass clippings Fountain working. Aquatic vegetation-bulrush, thalia, and duck potato are doing great; there are several trees on or near the lake bank, which are recommended to be removed. One specifically appears to be a mimosas that is overhanging the water surface. See photo. Removal of dead trees and overhanging branches mostly from the Westside (backside) of the pond. The branches and tree limbs were potential issues with the berm, and also mowing hazards for lawn crew. More work should be done in the future to eliminate additional woody trees from pond bank and at top of the slope. Irrigation pump pad-erosion along back side of pad. Severn Trent Operations to address. See photo. b. Algae: Overall minimal. c. Littorals: No issues. d. Submerged: A few places hydrilla is topping out and some chara, but overall no major issues. e. Grass Clippings: Overall system minimal observed. f. Landscape Vegetation Debris: No issues. g. Fish: No issues. 2
h. Trash in Lakes: Minimum to none. i. Shoreline Landscaping: 1. Shoreline Filter Zone: The shoreline filter zone is helping eliminate grass clippings in ponds, and providing an additional nutrient uptake. However, in spots the grass is getting to tall and appears unkempt in some instances. It is recommended to not let it get, as tall as, it has been. There is a fine line between the right height and letting it get to tall. The taller areas will allow more woody and weedy type of plants to move into the area. The purpose of the zone is to allow for a slight increase in height of landscape grasses. This practice should be reviewed to make sure the benefits and aesthetics are matching. Also, when the grass is allowed to get excessively tall, when finally cut there are some large clumps being left along and on top of the no mow zone, making an unkempt look, and these clumps possibly could end up in the ponds. 2. Tree Planted in Lake Easement and Overhanging Surface Water: 3
Tree, overhanging limbs, & additional plants. Photo: Lake 36, Large Tree Planted in Lake Easement Area and Limbs are Overhanging Water j. Bulkheads: No new issues observed. Golf Course recently repaired bulkhead on Lake 10. Collapsed Repair k. Fish Barrier: Lake 15 grass carp barrier has had issues and needs repair. Beautiful Ponds suggest scheduling repair when water level is lower, possibly January 2016 timeframe. l. Control Structures: No issues observed. m. Fountains: Working n. Beautiful Ponds, Lake Report: Received and forwarded to the Environmental Committee Chair o. Lake Bank Erosion: 4
Lakes 23 & 30: Contractors requested the grass filter zone to be cut to prepare site before stabilization work on Lakes 23 and 30.
