ASHRAE Guideline 36P: Hih Performance Sequences of Operation for HVAC Systems Jim Cooan, PE Siemens Buildin Technoloies ASHRAE Distinuished Lecture Proram February 2018, Wisconsin Chapter Pae 1 Aenda ASHRAE G36: History, scope, oals Relationship to other standards and codes Vision for use Technical content: operation Technical content: optimization Technical content: fault detection Technical content: alarm suppression Interconnected applications Status of development Pae 2 1

ASHRAE G36. History, scope, oals In the beinnin Technical Committee 1.4, Control Theory and Applications ran a series of projects leadin to: Guideline 36: Hih Performance Sequences of Operation for HVAC Systems Pae 3 ASHRAE G36. History, scope, oals Sequences of Operation for Common HVAC Systems RP 1547: CO2 Based Demand-Controlled Ventilation RP 1455: Best of Class Sequences for Air Systems Pae 4 Guideline 36P: Hih Performance Sequences of Operation 2

ASHRAE G36. History, scope, oals Sequence of operation for hvac system. Initially limited to room air terminals and air handlers. Extends beyond operation of the equipment Includes embedded, on-line fault detection Includes calculated alarms and alarm suppression Will include functional test procedures Pae 5 GPC 36P - Proposed uideline Hih Performance Sequences of Operation for HVAC Systems 1. PURPOSE: The purpose of this uideline is to provide uniform sequences of operation for heatin, ventilatin, and air-conditionin (HVAC) systems that are intended to maximize HVAC system enery efficiency and performance, provide control stability, and allow for real-time fault detection and dianostics. 2. SCOPE: 2.1 This uideline provides detailed sequences of operation for HVAC systems. 2.2 This uideline describes functional tests that when performed will confirm implementation of the sequences of operation. Pae 6 3

ASHRAE G36. History, scope, oals Current draft Intended future scope Pae 7 ASHRAE G36. History, scope, oals Room terminals: coolin only air terminal, air terminal with reheat, fan powered air terminal with reheat, dual-duct air terminal Air handlers to serve those terminals, OA, EA, RA dampers, coolin coil, heatin coil, no heat recovery equipment Sinle-zone air handler No fan coils, radiators, chilled beams, Pae 8 4

ASHRAE G36. History, scope, oals Goal: improve quality of buildin automation by startin with a better specification Goal: improve quality of buildin automation by standardizin the functions Goal: solve technical challenes associated with buildin operational oals, especially enery efficiency, and indoor air quality Goal: improve buildin operation with smarter alarms and fault detection Pae 9 Relationship to other standards Seeks to comply with Standard 62.1 Seeks to comply with Standard 90.1 Seeks to comply with California Enery Code Seeks to mesh with Guideline 13 Pae 10 5

Vision for use Enineers specify by reference to ASHRAE Maybe modify for the project Control manufacturers develop and test applications accordin to the uideline Contractors apply proven solutions Commissionin aents execute standard tests Pae 11 Operation: Generic thermal zone Setpoints, setbacks, operatin modes Independent of room HVAC equipment Opportunity to coordinate beyond HVAC Not a oal of the project committee Zone serves more than thermal needs Unify control of room operatin mode for comprehensive setback Unify for coordinated demand response Pae 12 6

Operation: VAV terminal Dual maximum sequence. Also called V sequence Makes it possible to use lower flow levels at the minimum 2 ventilation functions Minimum primary flow throuh the terminal OA flow needed from the air handler Sequence diaram from Public Review Draft, ASHRAE, June 2016 Pae 13 Operation: VAV air handler Start/stop and speed control for supply fan Supply air temperature control with economizer Sequenced OA and RA dampers, not one sinal Minimum OA control Relief fan or return fan Sequence diaram from Public Review Draft, ASHRAE, June 2016 Pae 14 7

Optimization Room hvac equipment is served by central systems that serve many other rooms Temperature and pressure of supplies affects overall enery consumption Actively adjust supply to minimize enery use Pae 15 Optimization: Duct pressure VSD Fan F F F F Pae 16 8

ASHRAE Enery Standard Setpoint Reset. For systems with direct diital control of individual zone boxes reportin to the central control panel, static pressure setpoint shall be reset based on the zone requirin the most pressure; i.e., the setpoint is reset lower until one zone damper is nearly wide open. Pae 17 Optimization: Duct pressure Trim and Respond application Each terminal sets System Request : values from 0 to 3 AHU proram adds up request values Increase, decrease or maintain duct pressure based on summed request values VSD Fan F F F F Pae 18 9
