7 All images are of Yaldham Manor and its grounds Historic Surroundings Yaldham Manor is a 14 th Century Grade II listed mansion located near the junction of the 6,000 year old North Downs Way (now known as Pilgrims Way) and a pre-historic route from the crossing of The River Medway at Tonbridge. The name Yaldham derives from the Saxon period meaning the old dwelling. This historical manor is set in 30 acres and is rumoured to be the setting for the courtship of one of history s most famous couples, Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. In the 16 th Century it was home to Reynold Peckham, the Elder of Yaldham, a trusted courtier of King Henry VIII. It is believed that during Henry s pursuit of Anne, the pair danced together in the late medieval stone Great Hall at the manor house, which neighboured her father s estate at nearby Hever Castle. Today it is said that her name can be seen scratched into the glass of the windows beneath the crests of the Peckham family. The site of the grand manor house is first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 in the Parish of Wrotham and was the family seat of the Peckham s from 1200 to The house was originally built by the Dedham family in 1192 with extensive additions made in 1880 by Reverend Edmond Evelyn, and of these, only the East wing and seventeen ornate brick chimneys, each with their own pattern, remain. Yaldham Manor has recently undergone a major programme of renovation and refurbishment to reinstate this magnificent dwelling and includes eight acres of formal gardens leading onto parkland. The Yaldham Manor Estate once formed part of the grounds to the manor house, with The Lodge and The Long Barn houses still remaining in their original positions within the grounds and retaining original features.
