4 History A number of owners of Benton End House were of considerable note including clothiers, an MP who signed Charles I s death warrant, an Olympic medal winner and Adam Buddle, after whom the Buddleia is named. Sir Cedric Morris bought the house from Sir Alfred Sainsbury in 1939 and opened The East Anglian School of Painting & Drawing. Lucien Freud lived there in 1940 and was painted by Cedric Morris in the first floor studio (which is now the master bedroom) and Maggi Hambling is known to have studied there and worked in the kitchen in her school holidays. Cedric Morris was also a renowned plantsman and bred irises in the old walled garden which were exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show from the late 1940 s - mid 1950 s. In 2015, a local horticulturist exhibited a Cedric Morris collection at the Chelsea Flower Show and was awarded a Gold Medal. Cedric Morris irises still grow in the gardens at Benton End.
5 Situation Benton End House is set at the southern end of Benton Street on the outskirts of the attractive Suffolk market town of Hadleigh, which has a comprehensive selection of shops for every day needs. Manningtree, Colchester and Ipswich have a much wider range of educational and recreational amenities and the commuter can take advantage of the main line train services running to London s Liverpool Street station. It is constructed from timber frame and red brick under pitched peg and slate roofs with 18th century alterations. It is referred to in Sir Nikolaus Pevsner s The Buildings of England series. The Tudor and Georgian periods are of exceptional quality with features throughout the house including high moulded beamed ceilings, open fireplaces, panelled rooms, high skirting boards and sash windows. There is a detached self-contained cottage on the far side of the entrance. The majority of the lawned gardens are walled and well stocked with a wide variety of trees and shrubs with the house having elevated views over the Brett Valley. The current owners have undertaken a significant renovation and restoration of the property, sympathetically enhancing Benton End House for modern day living.
