OPEN SYSTEMS For the majorty of applcatons, a steam trap s recommended on each pece of heat exchange equpment. The steam trap, or traps, dscharge to a vented recever where flash steam wll be vented to the atmosphere. The pu trap s located downstream and below the vented recever, allowng for proper fll head heght. See tables on page CRE-16 and CRE-19 for vented recever and vent szng for an open system n catalog 326. Note 1: Drp trap may be dscharged nto the recever, the return lne or to the dran. CLOSED SYSTEMS Applcatons exst where t s desrable to te the vent lne back nto the heat exchange space, equalzng the pressure n the heat exchanger, reservor/ ppng and the pu trap. Ths allows water to flow by gravty down to the pu where t can be returned. Valuable Btu s reman wthn the system due to no flash steam loss to the atmosphere through the vent. Closed system applcatons can also be used to dran lqud from the equpment under a vacuum. See nstallaton and operaton manual IB-100. Note 2: Vent ppng from the pu trap can be connected to the nlet sde of the equpment beng draned f the pressure drop across the equpment s less than.5 ps (0.03 bar) and there s a mnmum of 24 (609 mm) of fll head present. Note 3: A vacuum breaker must be nstalled f the vent ppng from the pu trap s connected to the recever. Float s lowered as level of condensate falls untl snap acton agan reverses the nternal valve postons. Repeat Fllng 4. Steam, ar or nert gas nlet and trap outlet are agan closed whle vent and condensate nlet are open. Cycle begns anew.
