INTRODUCTION Ths specfcaton covers the requrements for applcaton of AMPMODU MTE Interconnecton System. Ths system ncludes sngle row wre--to--board and wre--to--wre connectors usng 0.64 mm [.025 n.] sq. post technology on 2.54 mm [.100 n.] centerlnes. The plastc connector housngs are avalable preloaded wth nsulaton dsplacement contacts. You may also load your own empty housngs usng crmp snap--n--contacts. The housngs are avalable n 2 through 25 postons. Accessores for couplng, stackng, latchng, polarzng, and specal mountng of the connectors are also avalable. When correspondng wth Tyco Electroncs Representatves, use the termnology provded n ths specfcaton to facltate your nqury for nformaton. The receptacle and header contacts are made of phosphor bronze wth the matng nterface of the contacts underplated wth nckel and fnshed wth gold or tn--lead platng. The MTE header s solder tnes have a matte tn--lead platng on gold plated posts, and brght tn--lead platng on tn--lead plated posts Crcut Identfcaton AMPMODU MTE Connectors are marked wth a V--shaped crcut number one dentfer. See Fgure Cable and Wre Selecton and Preparaton Contact types, szes, and toolng choces wll effect the range of wre sze avalable as shown n Fgure 2. These values apply whether usng dscrete wre, jacketed cable, slt rbbon cable, or slt round conductor flat cable. Dscrete wres requre no preparaton for termnaton, but nsulaton dsplacement contacts must be used. Termnatng Head In all tools except the termnatng head used for the pstol--grp hand tool and pneumatc power assembly, fnal contact nserton s done automatcally by the toolng. Usng the termnatng head requres manual removal of the carrer strp and manual contact nserton. Tyco Electroncs recommends that contacts be nserted after carrer strp removal. However, when usng 8 -poston or smaller housngs, contacts may be mass nserted before removal of the carrer strp. See Fgure 3. When placng through hole connectors on the pc board, make sure the contact solder tnes are algned and started nto the matchng holes before seatng the housng on the pc board Solderng Through- Hole Connectors A. Flux Selecton Contact solder tnes must be fluxed pror to solderng wth a mldly actve, rosn base flux. Selecton of the flux wll depend on the type of pc board and other components mounted on the board. Addtonally, the flux must be compatble wth the wave solder lne, manufacturng, health, and safety requrements. Call the Product Informaton phone number at the bottom of page 1 for consderaton of other types of flux. Some fluxes that are compatble wth these connectors are provded n Fgure 9. FLUX TYPE ACTIVITY RESIDUE Type RMA (Mldly Actvated) COMMERCIAL DESIGNATION KESTER ALPHA Mld Noncorrosve Fgure 9 B. Cleanng After solderng, removal of fluxes, resdues, and actvators s necessary. Consult wth the suppler of the solder and flux for recommended cleanng solvents. The followng s a lstng of common cleanng solvents that wll not affect the connectors for the tme and temperature specfed. See Fgure 10. DANGER Consderaton must be gven to toxcty and other safety requrements recommended by the solvent manufacturer. Refer to the manufacturer s Materal Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for characterstcs and handlng of cleaners. Trchloroethylene and Methylene Chlorde can be used wth no harmful affect to the connectors; however Tyco Electroncs does not recommend them because of the harmful occupatonal and envronmental effects. Both are carcnogenc (cancer -causng) and Trchloroethylene s harmful to the earth s ozone layer. The temperatures and exposure tme shall be wthn the ranges specfed n Fgure 11. We recommend usng SN60 or SN62 solder for the header assembles. Manual provdes some gudelnes for establshng solderng practces. 13 AMPMODU MTE Interconnecton System Solderng Surface Mount Connectors The pc board pads must be solderable n accordance wth Test Specfcaton A. Typcal Solder Paste Characterstcs 1. Alloy type shall be ether 63 Sn/37 Pb or 60 Sn/40 Pb. 2. Flux shall be RMA type. 3. Solds by weght shall be 85% mnmum. 4. Mesh desgnaton to +325 (74 to 44 square mcron openngs, respectvely). 5. Mnmum vscosty of screen prnt shall be 5 x 10% cp (centpose). 6. Mnmum vscosty of stencl prnt shall be 7.5 x 10% cp (centpose). B. C. Stencl Stencl aperture wll be determned by the thckness of the stencl beng used. Generally, the thnner stencls wll have a larger aperture to mantan a gven volume of solder paste. Solder deposton should be wthn the pad area of the contact solder tnes. A typcal aperture openng s provded n Fgure 13. CAUTION! CAUTION! All traces must be covered by solder mask n the solder depost area. Exposed traces could cause brdgng and create a short, or wck solder away from the solder tnes, producng a weak solder jont. If a hold -down aperture s requred other than that specfed, the desgn must ensure that the connector housng wll not st on the solder depost. Solder Screen Generally, we do not recommend screen applcaton of solder paste because of the lmted volume of paste that can be deposted. If a screen applcaton s requred, we recommend removal of all screen from the solder tne and hold--down pad areas. Consult your suppler for compatblty of screen and paste, and for applcaton technques. E. Solder Mask Solder mask s recommended between all pads. If a trace s run between adjacent pads on the solder sde of the pc board, a solder mask must be appled over the trace to prevent brdgng and wckng of solder away from the contact solder tnes. Addtonally, there should be solder mask coverng any traces n the area of the hold--down solder depost. 15 AMPMODU MTE Interconnecton System F. Connector Placement SMT header connectors can be placed on the pc board by hand or by pck and place equpment. If dong so by hand, grp the connector at the ends of the housng wthout touchng the contact to prevent contamnaton and deformaton of the solder tnes. See Fgure 14. At the tme of connector placement, the coplanarty of the pad pattern must be held to 0.05 mm [.002 n.] maxmum. Tyco Electroncs recommends a solder mask to mnmze solder brdgng between pads. The mask must not exceed the heght of the pad by more than 0.05 mm [.002 n.]. CAUTION! Snce the connector housngs may rest on top of the solder mask, an excessvely hgh mask wll allow too much space between the solder tne and pad for a good solder jont. A solder jont under these condtons would be weak, and would not provde long term performance for the connector. Damaged headers must be replaced. Extracton/Lance Reset Tools [ ] and [ ] ( ) are used to remove ndvdual receptacle contacts from housngs for repar or relocaton to another housng cavty. The tools also are used to reset overly depressed receptacle contact lockng lances. CAUTION! It s best to reset the lance of any removed contact before renserton nto a housng. DO NOT reuse damaged contacts. Replace them wth crmp snap -n type contacts. For crmp toolng nformaton, refer to Secton 5, TOOLING. 4. They nclude hand tools for manual applcaton of loose pece form contacts, and sem--automatc and automatc machnes for power assst applcaton of strp form contacts. The followng tools are recommended for termnaton of the AMPMODU MTE Interconnecton System. See Fgure 18. S Hand Tools For crmp snap--n pn contacts, use Hand Crmpng Tools for AWG wre and for AWG wre usng Instructon Sheet ( ). For Short Pont Receptacle Contacts, use Hand Tool ( ) for AWG wre. S Termnatng Heads Termnatng Head ( ) termnates manually--fed wres one at a tme, each tme ndexng to the next poston. The head can be used wth the Pstol--Grp Manual Handle Assembly ( ) whch accommodates the head for economcal toolng or the Manual Pneumatc Handle ( ). S Tube Feed Assembly The AMPMODU MTE Tube Feed Assembly ( ) termnates unstrpped wre n the shrouded pn and receptacle contacts of AMPMODU MTE housngs and then seats the contacts wthn the housng. Ths assembly s used n conjuncton wth Electrc Power Unt ( ). S Electrc Power Unt Electrc Power Unt ( ) s desgned to accept nterchangeable termnatng heads, feed track assembles, and feed tube assembles whch termnate unstrpped wre n connectors usng the IDC Termnatng technque. The unt s footswtch actuated to provde the 534 N [120--pound--force] maxmum force necessary for termnatng wres to contacts. S Rbbon Cable Termnatng Machne The AMPMODU MTE Rbbon Cable Termnator Machne ( ) termnates connectors onto end--notched rbbon cable. The connectors should be n strp form and n plastc tubes. Ths machne s desgned for bench applcaton and s pneumatcally operated and controlled by a foot pedal. The seatng staton s manually operated and seats the connector housngs onto the termnated contacts. S Rbbon Cable Notcher Rbbon Cable Notcher [ ] ( ) s used to notch cable for contact termnaton. It may be used wth a varety of power unts. S Power Unts Power unts are automatc or sem--automatc machnes used to assst n the applcaton of a product.
