There are several Gudelnes/ Standards publshed by the ndan Road Congress for use of Geo-synthetcs n hghway constructon. The Mnstry's Specfcatons for Roads and Brdges also contan the Specfcatons of varous Geo-synthetc products for ther applcaton n the constructon of hghways. Even though the Mnstry has ssued drectons/ gudelnes on several occasons to promote use of Geo-synthetcs n the road constructon, yet t has not been recevng encouragng response from the project engneers, desgners. Therefore, pro-actve steps need to be taken for ther ncremental adaptaton. 2. Geo-synthetcs s a general classfcaton for all synthetc materals used n geotechncal engneerng applcatons. t ncludes geo-texles, geo-grds, geo-membranes, geonets, geo-compostes, geo-cell, geo-mats, pavng fabrc and pavng grd etc. The Geosynthetcs are generally used as separaton, fltraton, dranage, eroson control, renforcement n pavement and mpermeable barrers/ capllary cut off n waterlogged areas. 3. The Geo-synthetcs consderably mprove the strength of the weak sol strata. The use of Geo-synthetcs n pavement layer also reduces the requrement of aggregate especally n the stretches where the sol s weak. As such, use of Geo-synthetcs s also benefcal from the pont of vew of conservaton of natural resources and envronmental angles. 4. The ndan Roads Congress (RC) has formulated varous Gudelnes/ Standards where use of Geo-synthetcs for varous applcatons has been prescrbed. Some of the RC Gudelnes/ Standards whch stpulate use of Geo-synthetcs n constructon of roads are as follows: Page 1 of 3

RC:SP:59, whch contans only the use of geo-textles, has recently been revsed/ modfed by ncludng varous other Geo-synthetcs. The revsed RC:SP:59 also contan the desgn methodology for use of Geo-synthetcs as a renforcement n the pavements. 6. There s adequate capacty n the country for producton of varous types of Geosynthetcs, whch may further be mproved to a large extent by promotng more use of Geosynthetcs n varous applcatons of nfrastructure. As per the detals submtted by the Mnstry of Textles, the detals of producton of varous types of Geo-synthetcs n the country are enclosed at Annexure- and lst of varous types of Geo-synthetcs manufacturers are ndcated n Annexure-. 7. t has, therefore, been decded by the Competent Authorty n the Mnstry that all the mplementng agences and State Governments have to use Geo-synthetcs n a bgger way as per the exstng RC codes/ gudelnes and Mnstry's Specfcaton/ Gudelnes. All the State Governments are also advsed to nclude varous types of Geo-synthetcs n ther Schedule of Rates so that the estmated cost of the project can be worked out by ncludng Geo-synthetcs. 8. The feasblty of usng Geo-synthetcs n any project should be explored by all the executng agences/ State Governments at the DPR stage tself and, accordngly, ts usage should be ncluded n the Scope of the Work/ Schedule B of the Contract Agreement. 9.
