6 Descrpton 2.2 Functonal descrpton Prncple of operaton of the DrägerSensor 1 EC The electrochemcal DrägerSensor EC are electrochemcal transducers for measurng the partal pressure of a gas under atmospherc condtons. The ambent ar dffuses through a membrane n the lqud electrolyte of the sensor. A measurng electrode, a counterelectrode and a reference electrode are n the electrolyte. An electronc potentostat crcut mantans a constant electrcal voltage between the measurng electrode and the reference electrode. The voltage, the electrode and the electrode materal are selected to enable the montored gas to be electrochemcally converted at the measurng electrode. The electrons flowng durng the reacton are a gauge for the gas concentraton. There s an electrochemcal reacton wth oxygen from the ambent ar at the counter electrode at the same tme. 2.3 Intended use The Dräger Polytron 8000 s an exploson-proof devce for contnuous montorng of toxc gases or oxygen n the ambent ar, correspondng to the ntegrated DrägerSensor. The housng for the devce conssts of robust, non-corrodng stanless steel or alumnum and s sutable for ndoor or outdoor applcatons. The unt can be connected to a Dräger montorng system or a programmable logc controller (PLC) by means of a sealed condut or an approprately approved cable gland. Wth the optonally ntegrated relay module, the devce can be operated wthout a central controller (wth addtonal local alarm sgnalng). The devce s desgned for fxed nstallaton and s approved for use n potentally explosve atmospheres, see chapter 2.5 on page 6.! WARNING Not tested n envronments wth an elevated oxygen content (>21 % O 2 ). Danger of explosons! Do not use n envronments wth an elevated oxygen content. None of the Polytron 8000 nstruments s certfed or approved for operaton n envronments wth an elevated oxygen content. 2.4 Intended area and condtons of use Hazard areas classfed nto zones: The devce s only desgned for use n Zone 1 or Zone 2 potentally explosve atmospheres for whch a temperature range as specfed on the devce must be observed and n whch gases of Exploson Groups IIA, IIB or IIC and Temperature Classes T4 or T6 (dependng on maxmum ambent temperature) or dust of Groups IIIA, IIIB or IIIC may occur. The temperature range specfed for the devce must be observed. Hazard areas classfed nto dvsons: The devce s only desgned for use n potentally explosve atmospheres of Classes I&II, Dv. 1 or 2, n whch gases or dust of Groups A, B, C, D or E, F, G and Temperature Classes T4 or T6 (dependng on maxmum ambent temperature) may occur. The temperature range specfed for the devce must be observed. 2.5 Approvals See prnted verson for devce markng. 2.6 Devce markng Sample The devce markng s suppled wth the devce as a copy on a separate document. Key to the Seral Number: The thrd letter of the Seral Number specfes the year of manufacture: D = 2012, E = 2013, F = 2014, H = 2015, J = 2016, K = 2017 etc. Example: Seral Number ARDH-0054: The thrd letter s D,.e. the devce was manufactured n DrägerServce s a regstered trademark of Dräger. 6 Dräger Polytron 8000

7 Installaton 3 Installaton 3.1 General nformaton for the nstallaton The selecton of a sutable mountng locaton s crucal for the effectveness and performance of the entre system. Every detal of the nstallaton must be thoroughly thought out. The followng must be noted n partcular: The local and natonal rules and regulatons for the nstallaton of gas measurng systems. The applcable regulatons for runnng and connectng power and sgnal cables to gas measurng systems. The full extent of envronmental nfluences to whch the devce wll be subjected. The physcal propertes of the gases and vapors to be measured. The detals of the partcular applcaton (e.g., potental leaks, ar movements/flows, etc.). accessblty for requred mantenance actvtes. The geometrc of the accessores that are used wth the system. All other lmtng factors and stpulatons that may affect the nstallaton of the system. For nstallaton wthout a condut, an approved cable gland (e.g. Hawke A501/421/A/¾" NPT or equvalent) must be used (see chapter 12 on page 31). To ncrease the RF nterference mmunty, t may be necessary to connect the cable screen to the cable gland and to the control unt. The exploson proof enclosure has three ¾" NPT connectons, whch can be used for feld wrng, the drect attachment of a sensor or wrng an external sensor. Unused openngs must be closed off wth a plug. For the correct tghtenng torques for cable bushngs, plugs, sensors and connectors, see chapter 12 on page 31. The secondary crcut s supposed to be suppled from an solatng source (does not apply to relay contacts). The optonal e-box has up to four 20 mm connectons, whch can be used for feld wrng or wrng an external sensor. The permssble cable dameter s 7 to 12 mm. If the devce s nstalled n locatons where ambent temperatures of over 55 C preval, approprate cables whch are specfed for use at temperatures of 25 C above the maxmum ambent temperature must be used. Strp back the nsulaton on conductors by 5 to 7 mm. Connect the cable as shown n chapter 3.5 on page 8 (shown here also wth protectve ground) or chapter 3.6 on page 9. The connectng wres for the optonal relay module must be selected and fused accordng to the rated voltages, currents and envronmental condtons. When stranded conductors are used, an end ferrule must also be used. 3.2 Restrctons on the nstallaton The devce requres a DC voltage between 10 and 30 V. The mnmum supply voltage of 10 V and the cross-secton of the conductors used determne the dstance of the devce from the supply or the central controller (see chapter 12 on page 31). The devce s desgned for cables of sze 12 to 24 AWG (0.2 to 2.5 mm 2 ). Use a threewre, screened cable as a mnmum. The devce must not be subjected to any radant heat (e.g. drect sunlght) as ths wll result n a temperature rse above the specfed thresholds (see chapter 12 on page 31). The use of a reflectve screen s recommended. The housng s weather resstant and sutable for outdoor applcatons. The use of the optonal splash guard s recommended to protect the sensor from water and dust. The devce must be nstalled and operated n an envronment whch conforms to the stated specfcatons (see chapter 12 on page 31). To nsure proper operaton of the devce, the mpedance of the 4 to 20 ma sgnal loop must not exceed 500 ohms. Dependng on the operatng voltage and accordng to the applcaton (e.g. HART operaton), certan mnmum mpedances must be adhered to (see chapter 3.3 on page 7). The conductors for the power supply must have an adequately low resstance to nsure the correct supply voltage at the devce. A dust cap can be ftted to the cable entry of the devce. Ths cap s only used for transport purposes and must be removed before the devce s connected to a sealed condut. 3.3 Impedance range of the sgnal loop Devces wth a HART nterface can be operated wth HART communcaton or n HART Multdrop mode. Impedance range of sgnal loop as Operatng mode functon of supply voltage Operaton wthout HART communcaton Operaton wth HART communcaton (HART mode) HART Multdrop operaton Mnmum 0 Ω n the range from 10 to 30 V DC Maxmum 230 Ω at 10 V DC lnear wth supply voltage rsng to maxmum 500 Ω for 16 V DC Mnmum 230 Ω n the range from 11 to 30 V DC Maxmum 270 Ω at 11 V DC lnear wth supply voltage rsng to maxmum 500 Ω for 16 V DC 230 to 500 Ω 11 to 30 V DC Dräger Polytron

Ths reduces the number of otherwse manual nteractons wth the devce. The auto calbraton s only sutable for experenced users, as calbraton errors can occur here as a result of tghtened procedures. Not all of the avalable sensors and gases support auto calbraton. If the functon s not avalable, a manual calbraton must be performed. 1. Select Settngs > Sensor > Autocal. set. to enable or dsable the functon. 2. Supply fresh ar or apply ntrogen or compressed ar to the sensor at a flow rate of 0.5 L/mn.! WARNING It must be nsured that durng the zero pont calbraton, no target gas s present n the suppled test gas. Partcularly wth a fresh ar calbraton, Dräger recommends performng a second, ndependent measurement. Some sensors may only be calbrated wth synthetc ar or ntrogen (see respectve sensor data sheets). 3. Select Calbraton > Auto cal. and confrm. Please wat... s dsplayed and a calbraton of the zero pont s performed automatcally. After a successful zero pont calbraton, the span calbraton s started.
