5 VISIT TO TIMBERS Saturday 8th June This is a beautiful 5 acre quintessential cottage garden enclosed by a Kentish cobnut plat. Designed with a flower arranger s eye, the island beds include many unusual hardy plants, shrubs and trees. There is a rockpool with waterfall and valley views. Transport: This visit is made using member s transport. Due to limited parking, car sharing is essential. Meet at Barham Village Hall at 1pm to arrive at Timbers at 2pm. Cost: Entry to the garden including cream tea 9 which is payable when booking in advance. Outing to Timbers - Saturday 8th June Car Visit - meet at Barham Village Hall at 1.00pm to share transport (essential due to limited parking). Cost 9 per head including cream tea. 7 VISIT TO WAKEHURST PLACE Saturday 6th July Wakehurst Place is a botanical garden with the World s largest seed bank. Situated on The High Weald, there are over 500 acres of ornamental gardens, woodlands and nature reserve to explore. It has a walled garden, water gardens and meadowland. Refreshments: Available in the Stables Restaurant and the Seed Cafe Transport: Coach departing from Barham Village Hall at 9am returning at 6pm approx. 9 VISIT TO MIG KIMPTON Saturday 17th August 2019 Following the successful evening in October with Mig Kimpton (the winner of many golds at Chelsea), we have arranged for a car visit to his garden at Beacon Hill Cottage, Beacon Hill, Little Mongeham CT14 0HW. Mig is gradually developing his garden as a cutting garden to supply the flowers for his floristry and school. The visit will include, a tour of the garden, lunch & coffee and finally, a demonstration based on the Flower Arranging categories in our Autumn Show. Come along and get inspired to enter the Autumn Show for which he has kindly offered to give a prize for the best in show floral art which will be a workshop at Beacon Hill. Workshops are held from 10.30am 3.30pm with lunch included and covers various aspects of flower arranging from beginners to more specialised design. Cost per head. Visit to Mig Kimpton s garden - Saturday 17 August. Including lunch and flower arranging demonstration as per our Show schedule. 11 We are a family run farm shop and garden centre, established over 25 years ago. We produce many of the wide range of competitively priced plants stocked at our nursery on site. A great selection of shrubs, perennials, herbs, alpines and trees. Our range includes many unusual varieties. We stock a wide range of loose and netted seed potatoes, seeds, onion, shallot and garlic sets. We have ready planted hanging baskets and containers, but also sell the baskets, liners, moss and plants to create your own. We sell composts, grit, gravel, garden chemicals, fertilisers, canes, stakes, terracotta pots, gardening sundries and bales of hay and straw. Our farm shop is also well worth a visit where you will find a great selection of fresh fruit, vegetables, and herbs, along with a huge range of organically produced products including many gluten-free and special diet foods. 12 SPRING SHOW SCHEDULE The Spring Show will be held in conjunction with the annual plant sale and is open to members and non-members. There are no entry fees please just bring exhibits to the Grabham Room between and as per the schedule below. Whether you enter or not, we would like your help in judging the exhibits for us. Judging will be between and Also see Rules for Spring Show on page 13. The plant sale will take place from and results of the Spring Show You as a judge will be announced at 11 or when all the plants are sold out Note: Daffodils all fall under the botanical name, Narcissus. Narcissus also often refers to the smaller variety of daffodils 1 Five Daffodils (Trumpet as long as or longer than the petals) 2 Five Daffodils (Trumpet shorter than the petals) 3 Five double Daffodils 4 Five miniature Narcissi with small cup 5 Five stems of multi headed Narcissi 6 Five sprigs of heather 7 Five Tulips 8 Five stems of any other bulb 9 A vase of mixed flowers from your garden exhibitor may use own vase but this will not be judged 10 A sponge cake decorated for Easter A 5.00 prize will be awarded to each of the entrants who is awarded first prize 12

13 RULES FOR THE SPRING SHOW 1. Exhibitors need not be members of the Society. 2. All exhibits must have been grown by the Exhibitor. 3. Members employing a part-time professional gardener may compete. 4. Two or more persons may not exhibit in the same class and from the same garden. 5. Exhibitors may only enter one exhibit in each class. 6. The exhibits will be offered for judging by entrants and the public. 7. There is no entrance fee. 8. All vases for the Flower Classes will be supplied by the Society and must be used except for class 9 when your own vase may be used. 9. Exhibitors do not need to enter in advance and should arrange their exhibits between 9.15 and 9.45 am on the day of the Show. 10. The Committee will not be responsible for the loss of or damage to Exhibitors property, but all ordinary care will be taken to avoid such. 11. You may not judge your own entry 13

15 RULES 1. Exhibitors need not be a member of the Society to enter shows in All exhibits must have been grown in the Exhibitor s garden or allotment, except for Floral Art Classes. The Committee reserves the right to inspect the gardens of any intending exhibitor. 3. Members employing a part-time professional gardener may compete. 4. Two or more persons may not exhibit for prizes in the same class and from the same garden. 5. Exhibitors may only enter one exhibit in each class. 6. All Barham and District boys and girls of 11 years or under are eligible to enter the Children s Classes. 7. The Judges have the power to withhold a prize or prizes if they consider the exhibits to be of insufficient merit. Any protest may be handed in writing to the Show Secretary before 3.30 pm. on the day of the Show, when it will be examined by the Committee whose decision will be final. 8. In the Flower Exhibit classes all the work must be done by the Exhibitors alone. 9. All the exhibits must be staged between 9.00am and 10.30am on the day of the Show. All exhibitors must then withdraw from the Hall, after which, and until the show opens, only the Judges, the Secretary, and necessary assistants will be allowed in the Hall. 10. All vases for the Flower Classes will be supplied by the Society and must be used, except in the classes marked with an asterisk. Fruit and vegetables to be shown on the plates provided. 11. The entrance fee will be 20p for members, 30p for non-members per exhibit, except for Children s exhibits which are free. 12. Prizes will be 1, 50p and 30p for 1sts, 2nds and 3rds respectively. 13. Entries made on the form at the back of this Schedule must be delivered in a sealed envelope by Tuesday 27th August to: the box marked BHS Show held in Barham Village Store and must be accompanied by the appropriate entrance fees. Entries will be accepted after Tuesday 27th August, but not later than midday Thursday 29th August, and the entrance fee will be 1 per item. 14. The Committee will not be responsible for the loss of or damage to Exhibitors property, but all care will be taken to avoid any damage. 15. The competitors who won the Banksian Medals in 2016, 2017 and 2018 are not eligible for the 2019 award. 16. Pot plants must have been in the exhibitor s possession for at least 6 months prior to the show. 17. Please where possible, identify the variety of vegetable and flower exhibits. 18. PRIOR TO PRIZE GIVING NO EXHIBITS SHALL BE REMOVED 15

16 Please ensure that the rules for entry to Classes 19 and 42 are understood and followed in full. TOP TRAY CLASS class The Class is to be known as: Top Tray Class, sponsored by BDHS. 2. The Top Tray Class is for three vegetables chosen from the following eight. The quantity of each vegetable to be included is shown in brackets. CAULIFLOWER (2), RUNNER BEANS (6), ONIONS (3), TOMATOES (6), POTATOES (3), CARROTS* (3), PEAS (6), PARSNIPS* (3) * For carrots and parsnips the top foliage should be trimmed to not more than 5cms from the top of the shoulder of the vegetable. 3. The vegetables should be displayed within the area of the tray provided by the society. 4. The only decorative material allowed is parsley. No other material is allowed. 5. Each type of vegetable will be judged using a scale of 20 points split into three sections. There are 7 points for size, shape and colour; 6 points for uniformity; and 7 points for condition. 6. The winner of the Top Tray Class will receive a 10 Garden Centre gift voucher; the runner-up will receive a 5 Garden Centre gift voucher. TOP VASE CLASS class 19 SPECIFIC RULES FOR AUTUMN SHOW 1. The Class is to be known as: Top Vase Class, sponsored by BDHS. 2. The Top Vase Class is for a vase of mixed flowering stems containing a total of between five and ten stems taken from a minimum of two different kinds of plants. 3. The vase can be any shape or size but no marks are awarded for the vase itself. No seed heads or berries, and no accessories whatsoever will be allowed. 4. Foliage growing naturally from the flowering stem, and still attached to the stem is allowed. Packing material, e.g. oasis, is allowed. 5. The display will be judged out of 35 points. 25 points for colour, form, condition, quality and freshness of flowers, and 10 marks for overall presentation. 6. Prizes are the same as for the Top Tray Class above. ALL DAHLIA ENTRIES Flower types must conform to the criteria set out by the National Dahlia Society.
