1 WORTH HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Founded in This Society was founded in 1882 no doubt under the patronage of several very rich local residents. The very influential Head Gardeners who managed the huge gardens on the Estates of these gentry, were the first Committee Members. We have a photograph of such a Committee dating before Annual gatherings of the Society in those days were a showcase for these gardeners and the great range of produce they managed to grow which was sufficient to feed the family and the many servants all the year round and produce flowers and exotic fruits for the big house in all seasons. There was great competition between the rich houses and their gardeners. Massive displays were staged at annual shows giving an indication of the status of the wealthy family in the locality. Later Classes were introduced to encourage the many Estate workers to join in and show off their vegetables, fruit and flowers. Later still other Classes were included to include entries from the wives and children, like cookery, handicrafts and floral arrangements. The Society has managed to survive for 135 years in spite of huge changes in our gardening habits and is today committed to staging a Spring and a Summer Show each year - all the time there is sufficient support. For further details please contact a Committee Member listed on page 3 of this Schedule or visit our website above. 1.
